  • i actually had something like this in mind a couple years back....but itd be more like multiple horizontal and vertical sweeping lasers and when they'd find an insect they would emit a harmful frequency at that exact point.....i was a really weird 10 year old sci-fi fan (lol)

  • es un holograma,

  • Awesome, Every Aussie BBQ needs at least a dozen of them things, lol.

  • HAHA! some of these comments, "million dollar laser beam mosquito killer vs 99cent swatter or 2 dollar can of raid". But seriously, the video should of been retitled, "Mosquito Death Ray's TRACKER in Action". It wasn't armed with the actual laser.

  • It won't be long now until DARPA steals this idea and reverse engineers something like this to work on illegal immigrants and Arabs.

  • Nerd folly techno-jerk off: billions. Fly swatters $.99 cents.

  • @schratboy Actually, I read in the Time Magazine that it cost about $40 or $50 for the materials.

  • Can we put about 1,000 of these on the Mexican border... much larger of course...

  • @angurisloud sorry but our delivery system is currently full with american airliners ordered by alquaeda. Try again in a couple of years.

  • @angurisloud We also could put a big one in your WC ;-)

  • Can i have it??

  • Seriously, i always wanted a moswuite death ray.... I WANT IT!!!

  • Would be nice to have this software on my new portable camera,...

  • Turn the aimbot off and play the galaxy.

  • Myhrvold... how do you read that ?

  • @BlackGhost574 I think like mur-vold

  • i can just imagine it on a normal persons home...

    *alarm goes off*

MOSQUITOES GETTING THROUGH THE WINDOW AT 3 O'CLOCK, man the AA guns now !!

    Aye aye sir.

    *ZAP*

Phew.. that was close.. good work soldier!

  • This is engineering at its best.

  • So freakin' cool.

  • Can this be scaled up to the size of say.. children?

  • @AlphaPegasii That'll learn 'em to trample through my yard on the way to schoo! LOL.. all they hear is the beep as it locks on..

Honestly though-- this kind of tech is scary--it's obviously much more likely to be used on humans in the future than mosquitoes.. another advancement in the 'tech of impending doom' collection..

  • @AlphaPegasii retard

  • @AlphaPegasii cats?

  • A fantastic invention!

  • I'm waiting for the version with a button that allows me to blow up some annoying planet

  • just imagine a military version of that.... it would seriously kick ass

  • This guy would be instant millionaire when he miniaturises this for commercial use.

    I WANT ONE!!!!

  • @TypTyphus Hey don't forget MINIATURIZING the price as well!

  • SO cool! I never would've thought this was possible.

  • Finally, something useful to come out of a TED conference.

  • why would you use this method, out of all the other more efficient ones, to kill mosquitoes? Then, what would the market be for this? Of course it's cool but does it make practical sense?

  • because you don't need chemicals.

but how this thing will work in a jungle is beyond me too :)

  • Lasers are powered by chemicals....

  • Its a freakin laser...what other practical sense do you need ?

I want one in my garden, where can i order it ? :D

  • They've managed to create a system that can real-time track & compute something as small and fast as a mosquito's wing-flapping.

And you're asking if it's practical? Since when is cutting edge technology ever practical?

  • @ArakNafein

Think of the possibilities this could have. For example use it as an anti-mosquito system in malaria contaminated areas. If you would have listened carefully, they use the same processor you're using for games: The graphics card's GPU.

  • Well, I was speaking in terms of cost vs implementation.

But yes, I can think of many wonderful uses for this technology.

  • Comment removed

  • This is just a prototype. But I think it would be immensely useful for protecting sensitive areas: a medical clinic, an organic farm, etc.

  • @pxn20 nope. it can only cover a small area and there will be collateral burns on other things since the aim isn't always going to be perfect.

  • @pxn20 The Scarecrow of the future! And you can eat the crows too!

  • CRAZY !
