today in pe theory, my teacher showed us this video and at the end asked what its about, i called out anorexia, he said no, and started going on about a story about a girl named anna that got slipped ecstasy at a party and died later that night,
@Zozo1522 My friend told me she saw an interview with Silverchair about the song and they said it's about anorexia. It might be about different things.
@Zozo1522 LMFAO your teacher is totally wrong you had it right if you read the lyrics you can tell I love you to the bones, anorexic people end up skin and bones. I loved this song since the moment I heard it because back then I was anorexic
@Zozo1522 Sounds kinda like your P.E. teacher might be making some of his theory up, based on what he/she needs to teach and trying to create non-existent relevance for what should be good ol' Aussie music discussed and debated in Health or Nutrition class...
No shortage of drug-related songs out there if they need to make a point, but this isn't what Ana's song said to me.
@Warkenshin I totally agree, I said it myself in the early 90's. I think I was in grade 10 (1992) and was saying how shitty the music was. I quit ,just listening, to Canadian radio where they force fed you the same crap every day and realized that there was some awesome music being made in the 90's. I really miss those days and the music that went along with them.
@Warkenshin don't know what music your were listening to mate, but the 90's kicked ass!!!....I was there for Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Guns N Roses, Weezer, Sublime, Soul Asylum, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against The Machine, The Presidents of he United States of America, PJ Harvey, Offspring, No Doubt, Meat Puppets, Mudhoney, Mad Season, Veruca Salt and fuckin' Tool !!!!!...........anybody got any more to contribute,..please!!!
@canguroman yeah you forgot the red hot chili peppers and faith no more and janes addiction and metallica and mother love bone and blur and oasis and the pixies!
@unprophesy fuck i was born at the end of the grunge era (1996) well at least i was born when good music was still ''mainstream'', but i didnt enjoy it and now most of the ''mainstream'' music is shit
I think if Daniel lost wieght, shaved his facial hair, and grew his hair out he would look just like he did in this video. I will remember Daniel Johns as this person because I was and still am this person.
@Jrodman86 Yeah but I think he got tired of people thinking he looked like a girl, now he looks more manly. He still is pretty hot. Ages very nicely. When he was married to natalie imbruglia some greek paper down in australia, thought they were a "lesbian couple" and thought it was disgusting that they were holding hands in public. So to say something like him having to look like he did in his teens is just plain ridiculous. He is still the same person with or without a beard.
@drakenette13 I never said he had to look like that, I just said I will remember him this way because it's what I remember growing up. He was about 21 in this video too I believe. Also he looks cooler to me like that.
I can't listen to this song without getting a little teary. The way John's has perfectly described the relationship between the disorder and the person with the disorder is done so poetically and enchanting it's frightening. I also love all the symbolism in the video, it's fantastic, and artistic.
dude this song is about him suffering from anorexia nervosa. this is true music, none of this bull*** music that people play now. silverchair was one of the best and MOST meaningful bands ever. especially for someone who suffered manic depression, anorexia and severe arthritis
@EvieTaylorNixon "Ana's Song" é uma canção que falo da fase em que o vocalista Daniel Jones sofria de um distúrbio alimentar - anorexia. Isso está bem explícito no clipe.
I'm so sick of all this "music today sucks" bullshit. Popular music has ALWAYS been 90% shit to 10% good stuff. But we FORGET the bad stuff. We've forgotten all the shit from the sixties and seventies and whatever and we only remember the good stuff, so it seems like all there was back then was good music. But that's just not true. And there are loads of brilliant musicians right now. They just aren't on the radio cos they haven't had time to become "greats" yet. Get over yourself people!
@CrownedWithLaurels I agree with you when you say that the bad music was always there, and we just forget about those songs. But the big problem today is that people don't make music with a message. A serious message. People make music today to make money, and this is the only reason. I miss the time when I could watch MTV for a long time and listen to good music. Today we have good musicians, I'm pretty sure, but they're not gonna become "greats" because the great music don't sell anymore...
@SkuldBR Well, think about it - it's MTV that sucks, really. That channel is just dead these days. The great music is out there - maybe it won't sell as well as the popular crap, but often, neither did the people we think of as greats back in their day! Even the Beatles got beaten to the Number One spot many times by bands we've forgotten now. What matters is staying-power - in thirty years who's gonna be still standing? Only time will tell.
@CrownedWithLaurels That's a good point. MTV is dead. I don't know about other countries, but here in Brazil you can see anything but videoclips in MTV. But I still think it's sad that some years ago we had much easier access to good music and nowadays we have to mine to find some good stuff.
@SkuldBR That is SO true. There definitely needs to be a new MTV. The old MTV just needs to go die, or change its name to "shitty reality TV shows 'r' us".
@CrownedWithLaurels Agree, to a certain extent. Being the difference between now and the 90s that the good ones made it to TV in the 90s, and we had easy access to them by turning the TV on to any of the most popular channels. Turn the TV/Radio on today and all you get is Katy Perry and the likes. All due respect for Perry and her producers, but we'd be much better off if songs like this one still made it big and visible and we didn't have to dig to find the really good stuff.
@CrownedWithLaurels Also, the music we get bombarded with nowadays on the mainstream channels has no lyrical (or even musical, sometimes?) content whatsoever. I mean, "I whip my hair back and forth"? Silverchair, among others, were addressing the youth in a much more relevant and constructive way than singing about how "the club can't even handle me right now"...
@egzit I agree, but I still think there's some confirmation bias coloring people's views of the past. Good music is still played on radio and TV - I could give some examples, but we might have vastly different ideas of good music :) True, the good music is a small drop in an ocean of vacuous crap - but the same was true in the nineties. It was the age of the boyband, and for every Silverchair there were a dozen "Spice Girls" or "Nsync" clones. Time is the ultimate quality filter for music.
@CrownedWithLaurels but...where's the good stuff now? maybe it's jus me, but everything in music seems so bland now...even if the song happens to be good or the musicians do have talent, it all lacks tru passion... and the process of recording albums is more like making a nicely packed digital product....n no more concept albums...i'm afraid it's not about music anymore...
@HomeComingPrisoner Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan, Glen Hansard, Iron and Wine, My Morning Jacket, Fleet Foxes, M. Ward, James Vincent McMorrow, Sia - these are artists I like, and that's a matter of taste. But even someone who DOESN'T like them could hardly deny they have passion as well as lyrical originality, musical talent, and albums that are low on overproduction. The good music IS out there, it's just not going to be brought to you - you have to go find it.
this song is more then beautiful. it makes me cry. i used to be very bad with anorexia. like him i had no strength to move for long periods of time and i could barely bathe myself. just as skin and bones the flesh just keeps getting thicker. throwing up when u try to eat. ana really does wreck your life and stays ur obsession forever. ty silverchair for making such a strong song <3
he was pretty boy back then, but now hes gotten all those muscles worked out and lived a healthy life.. anorexic no more.

sweenybones 1 month ago
can someoe please explain the symbolisim of the girl bleeding hands?
i know the song is about anorexia.
sweenybones 1 month ago
@sweenybones I believe, to be honest, she's trying to wash through the dirt or flesh. For instance, "the flesh feels thicker".
Not only that, anorexia causes skin to not even come off after awhile, or even to decieve you. You'd be surprised.
I hate to admit it, but I've been a victim of the disorder, and you can totally fall victim to wanting skin off of you. Gross as it is.
However, in this video, it starts with dirt, so maybe she wants her hands clean, possibly to the bone? idk.

1:55 does anyone know what's written on the guitar?
Something like "Girls kick ass"?
That actually sounds cool when it's written on a dudes guitar.
I wish they'd go back to grunge.. And yeah, you may feel free to hate me for saying that. I won't hate you back.
