I know during the interview when asked he said this song was delicated to his father but for some reason, I don't believe him. This is not a lyric for a "father'. I think this was his confession song to his past love. But he couldn't come out saying "Yeah, Ah, I'm singing about my ex"...I believe it was a way to camouflage saying it was for his father...at least that is my take on it. Love this song.

Sting dedicated this song to his father...whom he loved but due to the kind of relationship they had (his father seemed not to accept that Gordon wanted to be a musician) they kept distances...years later, Sting confess to his father "I must have loved you," in response to a question Sting sets with his song "Why should I cry for you." I relate to this story...amazing song, music and lyrics!

I bet you can. It is just hard to get the point where to START counting.

See, the guitar always plays a loud and a quiet note, and his vocals are on the loud ones. So, the natural thing to think would be that the loud notes are on the time, but that is wrong. They emphasize the offs, which makes you think that this is some uneven time signature. The first note of the song is not on 1, but between 1 and 2. Try listening to the song with that in mind, it'll make your head explode at first ;-)

Although Sting said the song was about his father, I interpreted this song as his confession to his ex-wife, Frances Tomelty.

In the song he struggles with his guilt and denial but at the end he finds the peace in finally admitting that he used to love her.

Either way it is a beautiful song. It is one of my favorite out of 25 years of listening to his music.

And when I saw the sting song posted with the tattoo on the woman's back it struck a chord with me because when my grandmother died I loved the song a thousand years and I believe in reincarnation and I had gotten a tattoo on my back and it had to do with that sting song and rebirth and I was just talking about that to someone today and I saw this and I said serendipity I was just talking about that and then a sting song with a tattoo I love you on her back. thanks
