  • I listen to Metal, Rap, and Rock. But even I teared up when I first heard this song years ago. My sister sings this song everytime we have a family gathering and the whole family just bursts out into song. Patty Griffin will always be an all time favourite to me. No matter what else I listen to, Patty always tugs at my heartstrings.

    Bravo.

  • The range of Patty Griffin's song choices are simply amazing. She can sing everything from gospel to folk to country. This song is definitely my favorite!

  • Patty is amazing.

  • this song never fails to make me cry. every. single. time.

  • This your your all time fav? Better than time will do the talking?

  • @MattRobsonGuru ooh...those two are pretty damn tied for me. but her range of topics and tones in her music is freaking phenomenal!1

  • what the fuck kind of comment is that? are you one of those westboro extremists?

you fundys are in a league of you're own and its called "crazy"

  • *your*

  • This is my all time favorite Patty song, I'm so thankful we have radio stations in Austin that frequently play her music! She's angelic!

  • Love me some Patty Griffin, too!

That radio station, mintgirl45: is it KUT? They used to have a great morning show called Eklektikos. Maybe it's still on.

If you're ever in Houston, check out KPFT 90.1. Their morning show is an eclectic mix of TX music, world, rock, blues, and about anything else you can think of. And it's part of the Pacifica network. DemocracyNow! in the morning, good political stuff all day. And lots of great music!

  • KGSR is a commercial station in Austin that plays her often, as well as KUT. She tends to get more play on KUT's evening DJ driven shows, although I wouldn't be shocked to hear her on Eklektikos between a Puccini aria and a Broadway show tune.

  • @infinityorzero Beautiful songwriting and what a set of pipes. For any of you lucky enough to live in Alberta, CKUA is a listener supported radio station that I first heard her on. For everyone else, you can stream it on the interweb. It's an incredible resource and has exposed me to much music that might otherwise have gone unknown.

  • ....and how "the long ride home" is like my life, but by God's grace, even though he's hurt me, he will let me go to heaven someday, as in "home". It helped me get through a hard time in my life, I don't know that I think about it that way so much anymore though.

  • that's funny, I always thought of this from a woman's perspective. I guess it could be either. Why do you think it's a man's...because of the line, "your daddy gave a piece of land" as in it's an old fashioned song and she means a dowry by that. That's the only thing I can think of, of a reason why you think it. Doesn't really matter either way, probably means something different to different people. to me it's like singing to God of how he's hurt me in life.

  • your right, it doesnt matter harrietts2, but what about the part right before that goes, "the day i took your tiny hand,...", i always thought that it suggested a husband speaking about his wife. whatever, the song, like so many of her others, has such a "knowing" quality to it, that suggest a long life lived or good listening skills, or probably both. my 2 cents. anyways, great post.

  • Great post. I agree with you completely. PG is an old soul.

  • I saw her the night before this show in Tucson. She is amazing live although I was bummed that EVERY song she played was from her new CD. She did Sweet Lorraine for the encore.

  • I decided that I want this song played at my funeral --- I was gonna use Mountain Railway but --- ah hell! --- I'll use 'em both.

  • I have been listening to Patty for years. If you pay attention you will see that her lyrics are speaking as it if it were the male in the situation. This song and also alot of her others.

  • you are very right

  • she's beautiful with a voice from god....such a sweeeeeeeet voice, and the two harmonys at 1.38 onwards is quality.

  • She is the best undiscovered treasure in American folk music.

  • Amazing. My only regret is that I discovered her only recently. All that I've missed!

  • This is such a sad song... it reminds me of every funeral I've ever attended. Rarely is music so poignant.
