you know..i can agree with author - while pandora is expensive, netbook IS a way, maybe not best but what else, but old PDA can be used as let's say, emumachine novadays? umpc(NOT)?
there are only like 4000 pandoras in existence and if you think the $400 price point ($500 if you wanna get one before your dick falls off) is totally reasonable for this hunk of shit then you must have a lot of fucking friends to casually whip it out if front of as a 'conversation starter' or no friends at all and all the time in the world to play it
@ozzybwild really your "Atari portfolio" thanks dad you miserable lifeless outdated fuck, thank you for being so comfortable with your experience, and for administering textual justice to the 'noobs' of this world that 'fuck up the whole community'
il remember you the next time i play pong at the retirement home
Why use a laptop as a portable emulator? One second of rational thought tells you that it's a shit idea. Besides the fact that it is nowhere near as great as a pandora, have you ever heard of the GP32, GP2X, Wiz, Caanoo, PSP, Any smartphone? They all emulate old games, have better controls, are lighter, have better batteries, and are more suitable to gaming.
@richyroolahs: dude, i have already a psp with all the emulators and i love it, but PSP (and other consoles) don't emulate everything, so a netbook is the way to go if you have not 300 euros for a pandora :)
@richyroolahs shit idea? the pandora is £300 wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy over priced, an EEE PC is 60 quid on ebay, I MEAN COME ON? its essentially doing the same thing
I disagree with you. ImHo there's nothing better than this to play MAME. This "thing" is a pc and has so much more to offer than a PSP. A smartphone? Wow that one made me laugh.. Better controls than a plugable gamepad or a regular keyboard for that matter? If those thoughts seem rational to you...
My opinion was exclusively regarding to: "Play mame on a eeepc/netbook". As for "pandora" i'm not much inside that subject.
"rational";"inside" the subject will appear in next replies;)
@richyroolahs Just tell me something: what's the point of using that netbook the way it should be used, if its power is not enough for in fact anything?
most net books have intel graphics chips, even with "only" a 750mhz the pandora has the extra hardware (dsp too) that makes it preform way better that some intel graphics joke
That 'joypad' looks terrible. I have an EEPC and emulate tons of things on it, yet in know way am I tricking myself into thinking it's even close to OP. EEPCs aren't designed with gaming in mind, there's no dedicated 3D processing. Invest in a good controller and stop pretending this is even 1/4 as good a setup as the OP.
too big, battery life sucks, no dual analogue sticks, no touch screen, bad to non existent HD video playback, can't be connected to a TV unless the TV has a VGA in.
I don't see how this is anywhere near what the pandora is or is capable of.
This is sad. You can't turn an eee into a pandora.
Sure, you can directly solder in another SD card slot, or do the touch screen hack, or gps, etc, but it's not a pandora.
It's an eee. a bulky-ass-don't-fit-in-your-pocket EEE. The pandora is a truly unique effort in the field of consumer electronics, created by devs for devs. It's like FUBU for nerds. I own an EEE, but it's pandora all the way FTW. the Pandora is not the first open console, but it is the first _impressive_ open console.
I was considering buying a cheap small netbook as a dedicated emulation box. Its not totally pocket sized but it should beat the crap out of Pandoras performance.
u're all wrong .... if u just wanna play snes, or genesis games u can do it but u have to keep in mind dat the pandora got a 3D card (powerVR)... try to emulate n64 or psx games with a cheap netbook and see the results between the both ;)
I hate to tell you this, but all x86 based netbooks have 3d acceleration, most on par or better than the one in the Pandora. Paired with the more powerful processors in the Netbooks, plus two to four times the RAM, and anything the Pandora can run, the netbook could run better. There are already videos on Youtube showing full speed emulation of both PSX and N64 games on a eee pc.
There are really two main advantages to the Pandora over x86 netbooks: portability and battery life.
The EEE PC has an active community surrounding it and free as well.
As for style, expect your attention to consist of "Hey, did you get New Super Mario Bros. yet for your DS?" (of course referring to your Pandora) or "What kind of phone is that?" I do hope you're not expecting to get style points for what amounts to a small sub-culture's toy.
I do agree that it would be fun to play around with the Pandora, however.
I'd expect the pandora would shit all over any laptop/notebook of the same price as far as emulation. Not to mention the pandora has advanced 3d hardware, far greater portability, much longer battery life (10hrs plus), dual analog nubs, digital pad, L&R buttons, even a USB port. I could go on, but i wont. The pandora will be better for emulation, having all the other capabilities is just a bonus. There's no comparison between the pandora and a small laptop, they're two different things. period
I see a eeepc 701 for sale for $130 total...And I just got a DS Lite, perhaps I should of gotten a 701 instead. Then again I can do this on my 12" laptop too..just less portable.
Does it run all Mame games smoothly?? What about newer and larger file games? And ever try project 64 on it?
Well, the recent titles, such as King Of Fighter 2002 and above are not playble, they need a lot of cpu power and netbook are not for brute power, you know :) The older one I tested work flawlessly! I have not tested yet other emulators than Mame and Snes9x.. but I will do that soon ;)
Yeah battery life is a pain, just 2.15h.. but i Dont play more than 1 hour, so for me it's an excellent compromise since OpenPandora is not yet in shops :-)
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say, "no it doesn't have similar portability than an openpandora." Nothing against your solution, it's great, but you still have to carry the larger-than-pandora Eee, a game pad, and probably the Eee's AC adapter. Pandora's battery reportedly lasts around 10 hours, is about NDS size, and doesn't need an external game pad.
dunno, i don't play with my PSP on the bus, I fear to break it and being stolen, there is too much people in buses! But i play my eeepc in trains and works great :)
that craptop is about to shut down ;p

Jippie caaaaaaa yay... Thanks for bullshitting the retrogaming scene by advertising stupid emulator-abuse and copyright piracy.
It's noobs like you advertising this shit on youtube that fuck up the whole community.
If folks don't know what MAME is IT IS GOOD.
Anyone who fucking deserves using it already found it years ago or will do so him-/herself.
Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.
This fucks me up.
If we ever meet i'll slap you with my Atari portfolio WITH floppy attached.

Anyway.. keep on raging, tool. "Lifeless fucks" like yourself obviously need to do so to feel useful on this big, bad planet.. lulz.
