Such style and elegance! A trip way back to the time when standards and presentation and the sheer quality of popular music and songs were infinitely higher than they are today, with is nothing more than trash in comparison. Can you imagine the graceful ballroom/dance hall scene of the 1930s/1940s and then look at what passes for the equivalent today? It's like comparing gold with plastic.
Excellent posting...I was introduced to Max Raabe through YouTube, and was extremely impressed...I'm a big fan of music from the '20s and '30s, and Raabe has brought a wonderful combination of that era's American, German, French and Italian music to a completely new generation of fans...Fred Astaire would have been proud...Thank you again for sharing this with us...
We saw him in concert last night at the Paramount Theater, an art deco palace in Oakland, Calif. Max and the Palast Orchester were absolutely stunning. I hope he returns again next year.
@thunderwolf2012 im 21 and i usually listen to metal music, but I totally love this kind of music, especially max raabe. He`s a great Singer. Good thing I`m a german and understand his own songs.
How did it take me so long to come across Max Raabe? He is the epitome of a style gone by but very much missed. I hope he lives long and performs much..
"Cheek to Cheek" is a song written by Irving Berlin, and first performed by Fred Astaire with the Leo Reisman Orchestra in the movie Top Hat (1935).
This version is as outstanding as they come !
Added to my 1935 playlist, one of 111 lists for every year since 1900 so you can listen like you've stepped back in time. Then there are 400 more lists!!!!
@jesuscora and Bacchusland are in perfect agreement. "The articulation of Max Raabe singing in English shames most American singers (TODAY) by his better English pronunciation (SO WE CAN HEAR AND UNDERSTAND THE LYRICS) which is appropriate in his tuxedo and suave, refined style, subtle humor, whimsical charm, epitomizing the last Epoch of Art in our (WESTERN) Culture." (GLAD WE DO AGREE.)
Actually, I'm amazed at what good sounds he makes - his vocal styling is lacking in so many ways (the way he forms words in English and German is just so wrong for a singer, but it works!) and he consistently doesn't put consonants at the end of his words: "chee" instead of "cheeK" and "spea" instead of "speaK". but yet, because we're familar with the songs, we understand what he's trying to say. he's basically a pop singer who sings at a slow tempo so his words are discernable.
@rhinestoneman Its really cool that you pointed this out {the lack of consonants} He is a time capsule. He is going to be playing in my town this week. I just may go! Very observant of you on his vocal style. Well done!
@Arrow69hunter Indeed. He'll be in the Cleveland area this week; I was supposed to go with friends, but it didn't work out. Let us know how the show was!
@rhinestoneman AHHHH, he is not a pop singer. This man studied his stuff. The band was formed when they were all in university studying music. Do some research before you write your uninformed opinion.
@poppa2006 Actually, please reread my posting. I did not comment on his background, but rather his rather sloppy pronunciation. It happens to the best of singers - even those with just an undergraduate level of study! Go on! Get a life! Enjoy summer!
You're right. He's not a pop singer. He's just a singer who sings pop music. You know, the number of pop acts and artists who "formed when they were all in university studying music" could fill the Rose Bowl eleven times over. If Randy Newman can call himself a pop singer I think it's safe to say Max Raabe is one too.
Check out Brendan McNally's dark comic novel "Germania" (Simon & Schuster, 2009), about the Magical Loerber Brothers, four Jewish vaudeville entertainers and former child stars who were the toast of Berlin before WWII and who reunite right as Hitler is about to kill himself.
The articulation of Max Raabe singing in English shames most American singers by his better English elocution or pronunciation, which is appropriate in his tuxedo, refined style, subtle humor, whimsical charm, epitomizing the last Epoch of Art in our Culture, the 1920s-30s Art Deco period he revivifies here, after decades of excess of rock-headed roll out of show-offs' neurotic noise. Delightfully refreshing is Max Raabe and his truly entertaining, refined, amusing, Palast orchester of Berlin.
I agree he revivifies the 20s-30s style, particularly Art Déco, but Art Déco is not exclusively American. It was an international style that in Germany coincided with the period of the Weimar Republic, just before the Nazis won the 1931 election. If you listen to British and American, as well as French and German period recordings you will notice that Raabe reproduces the modulations that were fashionable at the time in the three languages!
@Bacchusland Not to disparage Raabe, because I think he's wonderful, but I wanted to point out that I used to do business years ago with a German company and found that most of the "English speakers" had very little accent when doing so. I asked several of them about this, they advised that many of the English teachers there were in fact English; aka Brits. That may account for the superb pronunciation in Raabe's case as well.
the twenties brought us that great last era of culture music but also was an era of society in unstabile situation which brought us into the second world war....
@Bacchusland He got one of his tuxedo jackets at a thrift store. Did you know that? It was the only place that happened to carry the earlier (appropriate) style.
This is the most beautiful version of this song I have heard. Thanks for sharing this video.
