  • what happens if you move the slide and valves at the same time?

  • Wow this is like the hermaphrodite of music. Lol interesting to watch. It's like having your pie and eating too!

  • Is this for only jazz? I am learning trombone as my 2nd instrument baritone my 1st and I wanna know if I can go on the field and march with it (show band)

  • Mike Park from The Skanking Pickle got me here

  • wait so what happens if you play a 6th position C on the slide and the a 4th postiotion D on the valves???

  • That's an incredible device...the facility of valves with the expressiveness of a slide. It's a great idea that could catch on...if it could be made cost-effective.

  • nnniiicccceee man

  • Where could someone buy a trombone like that?

  • That was some real nice stuff you were playing man.. but a heck of an ending though!

  • Hey thank u so much I have been watching your videos and I'm not disappointed I love them I play trombone too and now I'm start to spice it up and go into band I'm having lots of trouble:-( I love your vids keep them coming

  • Practice more.

  • Why are there so many hate-filled, incorrect comments about euphoniums and baritones on a trombone video? Let me put it in simple terms. Euphoniums and baritones can play in treble clef. Euphoniums and baritones are not the same thing. In Europe, treble clef is actually more common for them. When they play in treble clef they use the exact same (three valved) fingerings as a trumpet but sound an octave lower, like a tuba in bass clef. They use tenor clef as well but not as often as trombones.

  • u know what i just relized not only do u have to oil the slide but valves to

  • This horn is amazing. After doing some research and such, I ended up buying one for myself ($3,500 - ouch!) and I love it. It's truly an amazing horn and very well built. I taught myself how to play trumpet before learning trombone and played with my left hand, so this really works out well for me.

TL;DR - It's definitely worth the money if you are a serious player. If the valves scare you, rest assured they correspond to slide positions.

    Slide - Valves:

    2 - 2

    3 - 1

    4 - 12

    5 - 23

    6 - 13

    7 - 123

  • @arkayblesses I am thinking about saving up to get one, do you know were the website is that I can?

  • @Digby0907

If I remember correctly, I got mine from musiciansbuy.

  • @arkayblesses I play trombone baritone, tuba, trumpet. basically In my marching band if you learn to play one valve you learn them all. but I never noticed the slide positons vary the same like that. And the sad thing is I learned trombone as my first instrument,

  • Technicaly this is suposed to have the ssame range as a bass trombone

  • I'd imagine that bebop solos are a bit easier on a valved instrument

  • what are some good scales to understand the improvisation at 1:00 ?

  • Sick instrument I gotta get one

  • wer culd i get this instrument?

  • you have NO EXCUSE! to EVER be out of tune!! ;)

  • @sandsurfer55 unless ur a b eggioner in which im adv and im going to 7th im the only trombone from my peroid that went to adv band so yah

  • Epic! I wish I were ambidextrous so I could learn left-hand baritone then get a superbone

  • @weirdalfan5383

I wasn't even thinking that. He has to play the valve parts with his left hand.

That is quite the instrument. Pretty awesome.

  • @weirdalfan5383 you don't have to be ambidextrous...it just takes a little more concentration at first. It's actually a really good muscle memory technique for fast technical sections.

  • Hey! A really good instrument! And you're really good on it too!

Could ou maybe make another video, where you combine the valve and slide. Like trilling on valves while sliding. Growling or whatever comes to your mind!

You know even without a tune!

Just sound and different possibilities demo!

    That would be real cool!

    Greetings from Vienna!

  • 2:25

    ouch

  • this was too cool! I love it!

  • NERD!!!!!

  • 4 da superbone, lets say you playd a low concert E with all 3 valves depressd. can u use da slide 2 reach even lower notes that you coudn't get with da slide or valve trombone?

  • @carcrazy25Onx Good idea o.O

  • Why did the Superbone go out of style?

  • Wow, you are REALLY good! Plus, that trombone is amazing! I'm a tenor myself, but I also play a lil' baritone.

  • Nice performance! It's like Bobby Brookmeyer meets Phil Wilson.

Which reminds me of Maynard Ferguson's "Superbone Meets The Bad Man, featuring Maynard and Bruce Johnstone on baritone sax. Cheers!

  • That's cheating, man! Valves and a slide! Cheater! :-)

  • @steitisch Cheater my ass...It's a hybrid instrument invented by Maynard Ferguson. Do you think Rob McConnell was a cheater, too?

  • Nice work! I play the Tenor Trombone, and sometimes the French horn, and the trumpet, and don't forget the tuba. If you make another video for the Superbone, can you use the slide and the keys in conjunction?

  • how much did that cost you? i have been looking to buy one for a while

  • the superbone fascinates me, but i always wondered: cant you use the valves outside of the open position aswell? such as: second position+second valve for third position/first valve? it seems like it would make your playing much more versatile, though it would probably be hard as hell.

  • @JustAnotherAssassin You could use either the valves or the slide to the same effect as a capo on a guitar, running a certain phrase, then playing it again transposed and perhaps again and again.

You can use the slide just for smears while you choose your notes with the valves.

And you could really challenge your concentration by using both. Sliding while trilling would be fun!

  • This would work well seeing as I play trombone and marching baritone.

  • What piece are you playing here? I would love to get my hands on some sheets for it :)

  • @jcorll The tune is "Sweet Georgia Brown," but it's a rather jazzed-up version. Hard to tell just how much of it is improvised, but it sounds like a lot of it is.

  • So do you play the valve parts as if it were a Baritone?

  • @heyXtheresXmyXtoe

    Yes, same As bariton

  • @basunfan I have a rare case. I have a valve marching trombone. It's appearance is similar to a melophone or euphonium (sorry for my horrendous spelling btw). It is made by King. It is an old horn but the noise that came out has yet to change, It sounds like a trombone. but is has no slide. please contact me if you know what instrument I'm referring to.

  • You may have one of three things:

A valve trombone, a baritone horn, or a bass trumpet.

  • THAT. IS. AWESOME.

  • great!!!!

i like the awsome way that u play the superbone...

  • Good jazz playing. I've never played the trombone. I've been looking for a valve bone so I can double. As trumpet player I've been migrating toward the valve bone but deep down wanted to keep playing slide open.

    This video, obviously fascinated me.

I thing that you provided to model etc. If you have other advice, I'd be delighted to see it.

    Thx

    GM in PHILLY

  • I've heard that if you were to play on the slide side and just use the valves for transposition (or vice versa), it plays out of tune. Do you have an opinion on this? Such as playing a Bb scale with just the slide, then holding 2nd valve and playing it again to transpose it to A. Great playing by the way.

  • yo i wanna get into playing bone. i already know trumpet, so should i just get a valve bone and jive with that? or should just get a regular slide bone to play?

  • Thats COOL!!!!!! i play tenor, alto, bass, and valve trombone.

  • i want one

  • Can you only use the valves if the slide is in 1st position?

  • fuckin sweet dude , just a regular tenor trombone for me , FOR NOW !

  • Comment removed

  • Amazing! I have a valve trombone and a slide trombone, but you have the two put together! lol :) It's SUPER BONE!

  • So... I am going to guess you don't use valves and slide at the same time. What would that sound like btw? How would it change the sound.

  • hey is there anyway to press a valve down and play in a different key? like put down Ab will you be able to play a song in Ab instead of Bb

  • Great playing, I didnt realise you could get trombones with valves and a slide!

  • Comment removed

  • Amazing!

I play a basic E flat Trombone right now but now i wanna play this!

(have you ever heard of a tromboon? you should look it up)

  • thats awesome dude. you are the man. just amazing!

  • nice playing, we subscribed "The Leonard and Paul YOuTube channel"

  • Such Skill! Massive Envy! '~_~"

  • I absolutely love hybrid instruments! By the way, if you know carcrazy25Onx then I am the same person

  • Superb - envy!

  • I think this guy has multiple personality disorder. Lolz! Very cool!

  • WOW I want that trombone!!!

  • kewl!

  • wat sog i thissss i know ittt

  • @mrboom722 this is sweet georgia brown

  • You can get one on amazon just type in superbone and it'll be one of the first ones on there.

  • You can any valve combination on any slide position, so you can make something normally in 7th or 6th position closer, and theoretically never play that far.

  • That's not the point of this though--if it were then there would be no reason to have the slide because everything could be played in 1st position

  • i need to try one of these before i die

  • talk bout multi-taskin. I wanna learn how to play a valve trombone. I'm currently playing a yamaha bass tenor trombone(trigger). this is pretty awesome.

  • Where do you get those Trombone's from? And how much do they cost?

  • That impressive

  • holi shit das fookin awesome

  • kickass

  • that owns!

  • Im getting one of these for christmas. hopefully ill be able to be in jazz bandmy sophmore year.

  • I love this video man you are killin' on both ends of the instrument!!

  • Nice blowin, man. You sound more comfortable with the slide than with the left-handed valve playing. Guessing you started on slide, eh?

  • i wish i had 1 of those im in 8th grade and i play a regular trombone my director says im really good and that i should get 1

  • listening to this video i notice that the valves are only useful for those really fast parts that cannot be played with the slide like my marching music this year it wouldve been useful to have one of these

  • do you use a trumpet or trombone mouthpiece?

  • Trombone Mouthpiece

  • If you have a special wish to see about the superbone let me know. Could be at tune or what ever :-)

  • MrBillgun: Musicians Friend has beginner Trombones for just over $100.00

  • This vid rocks. I just got a very very old Valve trombone, Trying to find any resources I can on scales, lessons, anything. I grew up playing Tuba, Trumpet, Baritone and French horn so I'm thinking it should be too hard to figure out the Valve Trombone, any suggestions on resources?

  • Valve trombone is the same as trumpet, fingere settings

  • why not like baritone

  • Stupid fool baritone is same positions as a trumpet and i play trombone

  • Naw, they're not. Different concert pitches. Valve trombones have the same fingerings as baritones, NOT trumpets. Nice try though

  • Baritones and trumpets have just abut the same fingerings bro Lol

  • Yeah "just about" but not the same. They're one note off, so naw broski not really

  • @christheman97 they do, all the brass has the same fingerings(minus trombones) just different written notes.

  • @sandsurfer55 Yeah, because trombone was not originally made to be a valve instrument, I kept trying to tell @Spartymusic that!

  • So a trumpet C is a concert Bb right? Baritone Bb is open, and so is trumpets. Trumpet D you say? 1-3 correct? A Bb instruments D is a concert C right? Well the baritone fingering for a C is 1-3. Crazy how they're the same fingerings for the same pitch, isn't it?

  • @Benisuber Well, a baritone is practically a trumpet tuned down an octave.

  • Well, you're basically saying random things to make yourself less wrrrrrong.

    Have a nice day. :D

  • @Benisuber Less wrong? They are both in the key of Bb, and the baritone is tuned down an octave, Well actually, I very much doubt you have ever played or even seen a baritone, they are very uncommon, you are probably just idiotic enough to think that euphonium's are Baritone's like most people are, so knowing that, you probably know very little about the instrument, and thus your argument is thrown out the window. Have a Nice day. :D

  • Even on the interwebs, assuming makes an ass out of you.

  • @Benisuber Really, some fucking stupid ass 4channer is going to come here, tell me what I don't know about what I fucking play, ok, you know, enlighten me asshole, tell me what a fucking baritone is and isn't, please fucking tell me, right now you have done nothing but blatantly say no to whatever I say. This isn't what I fucking googled, probably what your stupid ass did, this is what I was fucking taught, and I if you have ever seen a baritone in your life, your fucking lier.

  • it would be "you*'re* *a* fucking *liar*"

And you really don't need the @Benisuber. Kinda wasting characters since I already get an email that you're replying to me.

Oh just a little fyi, getting super pissed off over an instrument really just makes you look more like a retard. Not that I haven't played baritone since 6th grade, just that saying fucking 7 times in one reply gets old. Diversify dude! Maybe you can apply that advice to music too. Try some good trombone. Have another nice day! :D

  • Comment removed

  • Wow Benisuber, what a douchebag. Yeah they're the same concert pitches, but if you put trumpet music in front of a euphonium or B.C. baritone player (assuming they can read treble clef), they will be one full step above what it should be. Check your facts bud

And havepie, you're right for treble clef baritone. But baritone really should be a bass clef instrument--B.C. baritone is the same as a euphonium pitch-wise, not a trumpet

  • Yeah they're the same concert pitches. This is what I said right? Why yes, I do know the basics of reading Bb trebel clef music, thank you for pointing that out....

  • @Benisuber I'm sorry this got all blown up and all, but have you ever played a baritone, or a euphonium?

  • Like I said, since 6th grade. Ever heard of reading?

  • its basicaly the same as baritone i play euphonium and my director told me that for jazz band to use one of these

  • @brunerboy then it should be easy because iv been told by my band conductor at school that the fingerings ar the same as trumpet

  • wow wait wait wait i thought a valve trombone just had vavles never realised it had a slide too

  • the trombone in this video isn't just a valve trombone. it is a Superbone. the average valve trombone as you mentioned has only valves and is shaped like a trombone and has all that weird tubing, the Superbone allows the player to use both slide and valve with ease making it deserving of its title. its pretty nifty.

  • Thats right, this is the rare Holton Superbone, and it have both valve and slide, a normal valve trombone only have valves

  • BEAST!

  • That's one beast of a 'Bone... O O

  • Very nice job man. You seem to have a good mastery of that thing.

  • lmfao I love how he runs out of breath and then angrily cuts everything off. XD

  • how much does it cost to buy a brand new basic trombone like for beginner band olz reply

  • You can get some cheap student models for well under a thousand bucks. In like the low hundreds. Look at the Yamaha ysl 354. Its a cheap beginner horn, but a lot of pros like to use it cause of the ease of airflow.

  • awesome!

never seen one of those before...

    :D

  • Very cool! And you're a spectacular player too!

  • superbones are cool but the tunning must be a issure, and im sure it was expensive

  • Very sweet. I've always wanted to try one.

  • DUDE! super cool!

  • what happens if you place the slide in second or anything other then 1st and press the vavles? will it make a different note?

  • then it will transpose, but out of tune

  • so there for you set for a G in 4th and it'll in the key of G?

  • Muito bom este trombone!

    Versatil!

  • Must be east to change keys.

  • Its out of tune then :-(

  • Really? I thought you could changes Keys easily because when you hit a valve it changes the tone of the set of notes. Thus the key.

  • You are right and wrong, you can do it, an its very easy, but in real life if way out of tune, just after a half step down its easy to hear :-)

  • Only the Holten MF( whatever number ) SuperBone, and the knock offs of it. Valve trombones are just vales, and true Marching Trombones are wrapped like Baritones, but the same bore and taper as a Trombone, I belive they're small bore. I wouldn't go for Valve Trombones in a Marching band, though... just takes out that Trombone pride...

  • True marching trombones are called flugabones or flugelbones usually.

  • I don't like them, there's just something about the sound, it's subtle just not quite as free.

  • Yeah.

  • Ah the "Superbone". What you get when you combine a not very good slide trombone and a not very good valve trombone.

  • great vid but will someone please tell me what the advantage of a valve trombone is?

  • Different Sound and style

(no one better say "It lets you play faster" cause that's not true)

  • Comment removed

  • you can do trills on a slide trombone.

  • Comment removed

  • aids in changing between trombone and trumpet, for a trumpet player like me i've been able to pick up valve trombone with a lot of ease

  • Ashley Alexander was one of the first to master the superbone in the 70s.

    Keep up the good work.

  • And maybe the only one

  • Does the first and third valves work like an F attachment together? And is the superbone in this vid .547" bore?

  • yes. 1-3 is the equivalent of an F attachment. just as 1-2-3 is the F attachment with second position

  • sweet, thanks a lot--I'll consider getting one

  • open valves = 1st position

    1st valve = 3rd Position

    2nd Valve = 2nd Position

    3rd Valve = Don't Bother

    1+2 = 4th

    1+3 = 6th

    2+3 = 5th

    1+2+3 = 7th

  • Yeah you can use the 1 and 3 as a F attachment. Don't rember the bore, but is a standard tr-395 holton.

  • I think it's a .547" bore

  • its a .484" bore, and a 9.0" bell!!!

  • A .484" bore with a 9.0" bell? that's the wierdest combination i've ever seen lol. It's like a bass trombone with a 6" bell.

You should be able to play really high notes on that thing then if it's only .484" bore then =P What mouthpiece size are you using?

  • Most pointless instrument ever...

  • its called a superbone and there is one for sale on ebay right now. appx. $600 US.

  • there is one for sale on ebay now!
