  • Great video.

  • Is there a way to train your dog without the clicker?

  • awwww thats so cute how they just stand there staring at the food

  • i only noticed that she's been well bodybuilt

  • the dogs are like..wtf!! were did she go...

  • i find that offensive that u said "since ur a chihuaha dou want a tortilla"

  • Thank you so much for your message on what treats do you use. And I will certainly check out the suggested video on this too. = D

    You are so kind!

  • The prettiest dog training lady on the internet, by far....... :-) swoon!!

  • What kind of treats do you use to reward?

  • @dodgerbuddy7 I use fresh meat, to try and keep it healthy along with cheese and kibble and brand treats that are soft and easy to swallow.

do a yt search for 'treats to use' for the video I made on it.

  • Is this something I should do as 5 min sessions every few days or something along those lines or should I try to get all done in one big session?

  • @TempusKing Clicker training in general works best when done in short sessions, but you can do several short sessions throughout the day. Just watch your dog. If he/she is getting tired, you shouldn't push the session any further.

  • I love this video. It really covers this topic so well. "Leave It" is essential when I see wildlife while with my dog. It is also a critical part of the therapy test which I give for our national group, The Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs.

  • my dog is too smart! well i say 'leave it' she does then when i leave she take's my food and hides it in my closet then comes back and sits on the chair like she did nothing then later she sneaks in there and eats it!

  • what is the click

    ???

  • would you like a tortilla,, since your a chihuahua :)

    Si SeNor :)

8 week old APBT and it worked great thanks...

  • Great training idea, I had not seen this method before. Thank you!

  • i mean it* helps for u it must help for me Ahha :)

  • okay this is cool im trying to learn and so i can do it for my dog im going to get i watch most of your vidos :) i helps for you it must help for me im going to get a baby pug aww there so cute to!

  • i have a hyper, big pup, she's got a low drive, is slow. she's very smart at other things but this is her weakness! if i try to follow your video everything works like for 5 min, the first opportunity she has she grabs that treat from the floor and..lesson done! i tried to teach her this command over last four months, had to change it from off to leave it cz of many errors she did and i dont know what else to do. she's perfect at tricks, walking ..it bugs me that i can't figure out this thing.

  • when she leaves the big dog says:

    is she gone?

    little one:

coome heere u know u wana

  • This is a GREAT video. I will sometimes use an "ah-ah" but all "ah-ah" means to my dogs is that they lost the chance for a reward. Not intimidation ever.

  • WOW!! :P

  • what happens if you dont have a clicker? THen what do you use? Your mouth? Will that be too intimidating?

  • @CeliahProductions All you need to do is buy a Snapple drink. Seriously. Use the lid as a clicker. Sounds pretty much the same :P

  • @Skky8686 Haha, ohkaay. Thanks .

  • @CeliahProductions You can use verbal markers as well. I use "Yesss" in place of the clicker a lot. My dogs work for both the clicker and "Yess". In fact, my red BC works for a little high pitched boo sound that I make with my mouth instead of the clicker. My merle BC works for the clicker...but they still both know what each others sound means...and, as I said, they both work for "Yesss". Intimidation isn't using verbals full stop, it's using verbals to suppress behaviour.

  • Cousins dog prancer doesn't eat the treats I use to reward him when he redirects himself to the path I am going when outside walking. Is it Texas heat, food quality- and or what to do instead so I know that he knows that is good? ...I could pet him lightly and tell him good boy. Is that the best for an old self directing doggie in training? Btw he's never vicious. Only pretends to scare u even when he places his mini-jaws around ur hand...lol

  • Great video :)

  • 1.46 omg

  • This is brilliant! Thank you so so much!

I'd also like to know what treats you use, please

  • what kind of treats do you use?

  • One question; if you use the clicker training method to train the dog initially, do you need to keep using the clicker to get the dog to do these behaviors? Or do dogs normally just adjust to the behavior and do it naturally?

  • @elleonhighheels The clicker is only used to "mark" the behavior we want at a specific point in time. It is not used as a remote control of sorts, and the dog does not rely on the clicker to do the behavior. Notice that "click" only happens on or very shortly after the behavior is offered by the dog.

  • @elleonhighheels You use the clicker to teach the dog what it is they are doing that they like. Once they understand what behaviour you are asking for, you can add in a "cue" (command word) and fade the clicker.

  • Hi, Im from Brazil.

I have a 3 months old mini yorkshire. I want to theach by using your videos. How long should I train my dog each day? 1h 2h? And how many times should I repeat the same exercise?

    Thanks!

  • You are amazing

  • holy cow I have never seen a dog leave good food that good that is amazing!!!! I SUBED!!! Amazing!!!

  • This video really helped teaching my puppy Teddy Leave it (He goes crazy over food). LOL XD

  • i do not know exactly when should i add the ver. cue. in a first sec. when my puppy see the treat or when he turn away from it?

  • dude I need you to train me HOW to train lol!

  • thank you for not letting anyone deter you from providing your great video's. I just got a German Shepherd puppy and i really love and use your methods a lot. You clearly have the dogs best interests at heart and do an excellent job. I wish I had you near by because I think this puppy is going to be a challenge. I've wanted a German Shepherd since i was a little girl and finally got one. But I had no idea how busy I would be just trying to ensure that she learns good positive behavior.God bless

  • clickity clack!

  • and now the kids....................

  • So well done, as usual. For the food in the fist part, I had to wear a leather glove in the beginning...my pup was quite the biter. Luckily, he progressed quickly! karlaire1

  • Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!! This has helped me and my dog so much. When I Look at other tutorials, they only teach you the basics but you get into the details. Thanks once again!

  • I want a clicker thing! Where do I get one?

  • when you teach leave it, does that work for areas of the house too? i have a pet-rat cage in my room and im getting a corgi tomarrow, and i dont want her putting her nose to the cage & getting it bitten. i tried putting a board up between the main part of my room and the cage, but the owner told me that she can jump over it.

  • i LOL'ed so hard at when the chichi was looking ears straight up like....I WANT IT!!! but i can't have it :(.

  • at 2:10 to 2:34 (When you put on captions) I LAUGHED!

  • @dragonballZfan3000 yeah, the cations suck, LOL

  • whats that click sound?

  • @y512516 the clicker marks the behaviour, so the dog actually knows which bit of the cue is right. And it also means "good dog, i like what you did, you win a treat" :) hope that helps

  • @nataliawasilewska97

    ahh

so does that works with cats?

  • @y512516 yes it works with all kinds of animals, they first used it to teach dollphins, Clicker training is the best method for all dogs, cats and all sort of animals,

If you want to learn more about clicker trianing put "what's clicker training" in the youtube search tab.

  • @nataliawasilewska97

finally a way to make it stop sharpening its claw on the front door

  • Great video... I don't think most people understand what is going on, probably.

  • i love how u use dogs who dont know how to stay sit or whatever thank you:D

  • Thank u

  • Haven't had a dog for a while because I didn't know how to train them and all my friends pets have so many behavioral problems. But after watching your videos I think I might be getting a puppy soon and definitely naming him or her "Kiko".

Your videos are amazing keep up the goodwork.

  • Very good video !

Q , does the dog can learn not to eat staff from the ground while you walking with him ? (without you saying "leave it")

I want my dog to be able to decide not to eat something from the flower when I'm not next to him

  • @macdasi it's a lot of hard work. What basically happens is that "leave it" has to become the default behaviour, so after mastering the steps of the video, you begin training outside, first with the cue, then try it sometime without, but be prepared to stop him. It is important that the dog does not get "stuff from the ground" ever. From endless repetition alone, your dog will "leave it" by default.

  • if your not using a clicker... wat should you do... should i say leave it?

  • @Kikyo361 you can use a word instead of a clicker. I use a short "yes" sometimes instead when I don't have enough hands!

The clicker is marking the behaviour to reward (such as leaving the food), introducing the word "leave" would probably be the next step after you've followed this video :)

  • @rachieroomoo oki thx so much !!! =]

  • Thank you for teaching...i love it and i´ll try!!!

  • my chihuahua LOVES klenex! I try to teach her LEAVE it but she goes to it everytime? any tip ????

  • How long should sessions be. Im litterally just starting to train my dogs. And would like to know what the best session length should be :)

  • I always worry if I'm giving treats too big for a chihuahua that would get them full too fast. It can get messy and difficult to rip regular dog treats in tiny bits. What do you recommend or what kind of treats do you use for your chihuahua?

  • Why do you put the dog's treat reward on the floor rather than feeding from your hand?

  • Just finished watching the rest of the video, and I see you do start offering the reward from your hand. What makes you decide to offer the treat from your hand vs on the floor?

  • no wonder the dog doesnt want the food its a bagel!!! why dont u put like a hotdog or something. i can make a vid like u and il put a brick there and it will pay attention to me aswell

  • @marissa4eva Lol. Some dogs like everything, from bagels to fruits. How do you know if her dogs would respond different to a hotdog than to a bagel? I think they would leave it both, they're very well trained for as far as I have seen from the video's. Besides, I have tought my dog to 'leave it' with this method, and my dog would really leave the hotdog/hamburger/sausages if I told her to. So it really does work, well... If you do it right.

  • @marissa4eva

I met a dog once that loved bread. I was about ten years old and I was eating a bun at a party, and it followed me around until it saw that I had finished it. Then I went and got another, and it started following me again and whining at me. I thought I could get it to stop following me by showing it that it was only bread, but the moment I put my hand out, it gobbled it up and started barking for more. I know it sounds weird, but dogs actually do love things like bagels.

  • this is really good idea of teaching leave it!

  • really come, why train with a treat and bribe the dog!

  • @maxroc80 When you get paid for your work, do you call that a bribe too? What's wrong by rewarding a dog for good behaviour with a treat and/or compliments. When does a reward become a bribe. No man or animal does anything on command if there is not some sort of reward unless they or forced to or intimidated. So, what is according you a better way?

  • Wow thanks....When i say Leave it/my dogs leave it......Until i turn around.Now they actually leave it :)

  • my dog is ridiculous! she will wait till im gone, go and check if im coming back, then go back and eat the "leave it" item.... lol.. but ill try this method! thanks!

  • why are you eating DOG FOOD

  • @hohohee1 Its spaghetti. xD

  • I find your vids very helpful when training my chi. thank you :) I wonder if my local pet store sells clickers...

  • @MrBowie55 kikopup says the dog chooses her over the food. That's what happens at first when training this. Later however, the dog does not choose, he simply does what he always does to achieve success, eventually. That's why they will seem to "choose" to leave almost everything. also the chihuahua in the video is still using his concentration for this behaviour, while the other dog relaxes.

  • I'm not a great fan of clicker training, to be honest, but I love how clearly and concisely you explain what you do and WHY.

  • Thank you for all your videos! I'm planning on getting a new (older) dog and I've watched tons of training videos and gone through a few books. But Alot of them tell you to teach "No" and "Aach!" Which sounds kinda crazy to me BECAUSE I don't want to intimadate or scare my new dog that's still a little unsure about me anyway! YOUR approch is more safe and rewording for both of us, and by following your instructions I know that every lesson time will strenthen our bond. No worries now, Thanks! :)

  • I'm impressed. I don't think I'd be able to leave yakisoba...

My dog has "leave it" up to the steps you showed how to train (on-leash or off-leash with coverable food), but how to you get to the point where you can have the dogs off-leash and leave the room? Could you do a video from where you left off to that stage?

  • We've just gotten past the first part of this video today.... one of my dogs was super quick to catch on, by the end of the first session, he was looking at me instead of my hand :D one of the other ones, though... well it's going to take a few more sessions ;) You've really inspired me to switch to clicker training!

  • how many sessions did it take you to train the dog for this command? I am trying it with my 5 month old aussie

  • kiko is not fat my chihuahua is

  • @goldsmithstudent you can calculate what your dog needs. Often, Dog food comes with a formula for that. Substract at least a quarter from that, and your dog doesn't get fatter. Fill the food for the day into a cup or whatever, then always take meals from that. You can even train with this food now, because a dog that is loosing weight or not gaining fat is almost always hungry...

  • yeah easy to do when its not a 150lbs great dane puppy.

  • @0valo01 I've got a giant breed dog too, it works just the same. You have to be patient and have well-timed clicks/rewards.

  • @0valo01 Still easy, the method she is teaching involves no physical contact at all, anyone can do it, with any sized dog.

  • where can u buy a clicker and how much would they cost ive been looking for one for qiute a while now but no luck

  • @AndrewJThomas97 petco has them at the registers for like $1

  • if i told my border collie to leave it and then left the room he would shit on it

  • why are they always put on thier leads?

  • Very helpful videos!!!!!

  • Thanks soooo much...this video is so well explained...u are my hero...!!!!!!

  • At my classes we call it puppy zen xD Its so easy to teach,my 5 month puppy Amber will back away at least a foot from food. Its great!

  • Oops I meant 4.5 month lol

  • This is so helpful! I have a 4.5 rescue puppy and we have been practicing "leave it" for the past two days... I'm trying to go slowly since he's a little young. I love the fact that this is confidence-building and there is no intimidation!!

  • is this even work for a basset? my basset never listened to the leave it command.

  • great video :)

  • `do you only use the clicker when the dog does something right?

  • @ricebowl488 Yes,only when the dog is doing something you want them to do like in this video the girl wants the dog to ignor the food thats on the ground and pay attention to her.So everytime they dog looked at her instead of the food she clicked.Pritty much the clicker means "YES!THATS IT!"

  • I clicker train my parrots. my parrots or dog would get mixed up if i clicker train my parrot or my dog when they hear the clicker?

  • Help! I have a 1and a half month puppy that bytes averythyng including the cat. She is playing with her but sometimes she is byting her from the neck and I am afraid that she will hurt her or maybe killing her later. Please help me. Thancks

  • I try to do this with my new dog but he's not interested in what i'm holding. What is something good to hold so he'll try to get it so I can train him not to go after other things.

  • If i didn't want my hand to get hurt what would I do to keep him from biting my hand too hard? Maybe wear gloves?

  • you didn't see it but the big one licked plate

  • I really enjoyed watching your video. I'd never heard of calming signals before, and it's nice to see positive reinforcement working better than negative reinforcement.

  • hey max

    what?

    eat some

    NO!

    why?

    she aid leave it

ok, after the video, eat it

    ok

  • Thanks Emily, this one clears up some things for me, although my puppy eats my hand even when there's no food at all! I might need to try the mouthing exercise you talk about in another video. Someone else says that when your puppy hurts you, you should squeal like another puppy would if she got bitten. Apparently it helps the puppy learn what's too hard a bite. What do you think?

  • where in hell is this clicking sound coming from?

  • What an excellent video! Too bad clickers don't work on cats. :) I have also sleep clicker training used on horses with some success.

  • Really, really appreciate your philosophy and techniques -- there are so many trainers out there that simply don't "get it". Lucky pups that come your way!

Have you ever considered using a word as an indicator instead of a clicker? :)

  • where do you get the clicker?

  • Wow i was wondering how you stop that thanks :D

  • I have to teach my dog this! but most often the problem is, that she finds some food or other eatable stuff during walks, and she sees it before I do...so I can't tell her to leave it before she has it in her mouth...will she know how to leave anything not coming from my hands, once she's learned the "leave it" cue? or how do you get your dogs not to find food lying around during walks?

  • I appreciate all the videos you upload your simply amazing at training dogs. I've taught my dog to leave it. But Im having trouble releasing him from the command. For example I tell him to leave it and he does, then I give him the release command of get it but he continues to leave it. I try to pursue him to get it but he doesn't. I would like to get these two commands down so I can balance a biscuit on his nose and when I leave it he does and then when I say get it he flip eats it.

  • @Carlitosway2k8 If your goal is to get the dog to take a biscuit from their nose, build distractions using eye contact then release the dog to get the biscuit.

You dog has learned that "leave it" means "Leave that alone forever!" -- this is great, use it to your advantage instead of diminishing the power of the command.

  • Mmm, yakisoba. . . yum!

  • When do you recommend starting training? My puppes are 9 and 10 weeks old. Boy they are husky handfuls!

  • Is the click a way of reward or something what does it mean when you do that ...? and what does it mean to the dog when you do that ...? Thanks Love your Videos ...! I Subcribed :)....

  • SUBSCRIBED. I really dig what you're doing!!! Thanks and keep it up!

  • Wow, great video! You should enter your video into this contest, Ewisdomtv

  • excellent video many thanks, lovely dogs

  • good video thanks for posting

  • Very Nice training :o)

  • Interesting video.

  • Great vid! I taught leave it using a very similar form of this training though we haven't really worked on it in a good while..I'll have to test them and see if we need a brush up!

  • Excellent video!! Thanks!!

  • Thanks

  • great video

  • wow!!! great video!!!

  • That is incredible! I def have to try this one cause I have a little monster who's the worst at taking treats cause she always ends up taking a finger or too. You're awesome! Thanks for the tutorial

  • Ya that's what I did with my 13 week old who I taught sit and paw with. One treat turned into like 5 small pieces.

  • You are supposed to add the cue when they figure out they are to look at it and not what you want them to leave it. After they get the gist of getting a treat if they look at you and what they are not supposed to- you introduce the command "Leave It".

That was a great video and I can't wait to go teach it to my 13 week old Morkie! Thanks!

  • you seem like your great trainer

  • such a helpful video. I also have a chihuahua and would like for him to learn this because hes constantly chewing socks, shoes, or food if left unattended. We did our first 5 min session today and he was doing quite well, and i was also wondering how many more sessions i should do with him before i add the command leave it?

  • Really a good job. Sometimes it's dificult to think a way to teach something using only positive reinforcement. Until someone shows you how

    Thanks

  • great video, THANKS!

  • Great Video im so glad i watched this. I have a puppy siberian husky and this worked better than the other videos ive seen.

  • You're a great trainer! I'm confused on one thing. So when do you add the verbal cue and why not at the beginning simultaneously with the hand cue??

  • This is amazing! I love your dogs, and you are a brilliant and kind trainer.

At first I thought Kiko was an Italian Greyhound 'cause she's so much thinner and taller than my chihuahua. I also have an IG/rat terrier mix.

I'm not sure if my dogs are too old to learn this, they're 9 and 10. The IG isn't that interested in food, so maybe. The chihuahua tries to ensure the IG never gets any food, or anything for that matter, so I think she'll be tough.

Thanks for sharing your great videos!

  • omg wow thanks but i was wondering how u do dat clicking sound?

  • You use a clicker, you can purchase those at petsmart or any other pet store.

  • oh okay thanks, but why does da clicker help them learn?

  • i was wondering what type of rewards your using

  • Thank you SO MUCH for this video. This technique literally transformed my foster dog over night!! His confidence and happiness has soared!

  • Excellent technique, it is much better this way then by intimidation.

Thank you for posting the lessons.

  • =) if the dog is not trained or is new do not try this techique until he is more familiar with you as his master.. OTHERWISE.. >.> Bitten..."instores now" LOL

  • I have german shepherd 18 weeks old she have kennel cough can you give me a tips please !!!

  • I need to do this with my schnauzer, he is a food nut.

Love your border collie by the way. Beautiful. :)

  • your dogs are reeeeally well trained! if you dont have a clicker, can you just say "good boy!"

  • My training class did not teach me the stay back click. And I ended up with the mug you but step back quickly to get food.

    So this a great tip.

  • i don't think its racist at all. My dog is from Mexico. I eat a lot of Tortillas because I live on the mexican border. Chihuahuas are a breed that is from Mexico?

  • @kikopup do you live in california? if you do im fucking jelous

  • @kikopup I always thought Chihuahuas were from China imported to mexico from what ive learned :)

  • very very very good video !! I learn a lot of things about clicker training, thanks !

  • Is it less effective without a clicker?

  • I would say it is, a clicker would help the training process move along a lot quicker. :)

  • great video, clear well spoken, and great video demonstrating many repetitions of the training. this helps a lot, I've been hitting a wall recently with my little puppy, and i realized something when I came across this video. He's so hyper and fixated on my hands for the treat he's not actually looking at ME for commands. He tries frantically to entice me with behaviors he thinks will get him the next treat. there is no eye contact and he definitely misses the command many times.

  • Thanx I have been working with her and she is very smart finally getting through your method works, amazing, I have passed it on to all dog owners and cats thanks again you're the best! A MIRACLE WORKER.

  • Very interesting video!

  • Wow that was impressive.

I love the big dogs reaction after a moment.

  • Thanks this video is very helpful. I'll start working with my puppy on this.

  • My dog is 9 years old and this has helped me so much. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? <3

  • My pup won't look at my eyes, she stares at either the clicker or the food, even when she's stopped molesting my hand. Is there any way I can call her attention to my face? If I make a "tek tek!" noise she'll look up at me, but I don't want to confuse her.
