in the same tour, in Italy, in the band was David Freiberg too. Diana Mangano on vocals, slick Aguilar lead guitar, Prairie Prince drums and Chris Smith Keyboards. Unaspectable nice concert!
I have know only the CSN cover till now. Now I understand the way they together wrote this great track. You can play both ways and have a song to be remembered!
WOW....this is an amazing live version of a song they recorded some 40 years ago...I had no idea they had a 'new' female lead singer, but she's awesome....kinda hits the notes and harmonies a la Grace.
I think it's a great concept! They were heroes of their time because they dared to question some of this society's values, and you are the beneficiary of their heroism because you get to live a life today with great freedom and many choices.
Your a A-typical person that thinks there cool because they quote some dumbshit author, that made up some dumbshit because they werent cool enough to be a part of this culture.... suck it up... Just try to be cool once!!!
Woodstock was just a concept brought to some gentlemen who posted an advert in the New York Times for a money making plan using "Unlimited Capital." Michael Lang approached them and wah-lah. Woodstock. The tickets were $100 in todays money & the intention was to sell them for around $200 at the gates. The artists generally went on for $15,000 (69 currency and Lang's limit) except Hendix, who was around $30,000 which Jefferson Airplane also tried to demand when they heard
Kantner co-wrote it with CSN, and each had the right to claim ownership without having to give credit the other... it was and still is pretty common to do that.
I remember arguing with a friend back in teh 70s about which version was better -but can't remeber fer sure which side I was on - think I pulled for the Airplanes version -both are amazing -- it was co wrote by Paul Kantner and David Crosby -and I think Steve Stills
I saw these guys at 40 anniversary tour in Richmond in 2007 --I have been a hardcore airplane - and blows against empire strshpi fan since 67 when I heard them on the radio the very 1st time -I was 13 and i still remeber where I was when I heard em - they we're beyond belief at he 40th - better than ever - love that chic vocalist but she has since left -her replacement who sat in for Janis with BIg Bro last year was great but Maria was very special
I love csn version of this tune as well. Loaded in my ipod they are back to back.. as they should be. It was wonderful to see this video and hear the magic again. Grace has such Grace.. retired before she was long in the tooth (there are interviews where she talks about this) and so she remains in our ears and visuals young and vibrant.
I think this version captures the hippie spirit and mysticism better than the CSN version, which I also enjoy! The bands did drugs together and jefferson airplane got permission from CSN before they recorded their version.
Plus I believe the CSN recording was too clean. Paul had a tendency to make songs into larger-than-life epics, and it really shows on the Airplane's studio version.

"Heroes of Woodstock." What a pathetic concept.

As one conformed to this debased age, you have a typically debased notion of heroism. Very sad.
Though you're most likely not open to such thoughts, I recommend that you read the following:
-The Aesthetics of Music, by Roger Scruton
-Not With A Bang But A Whimper, by Theodore Dalrymple
-Our Culture, What's Left of It, by Theodore Dalrymple
Also google for an essay by Mark Steyn by using these words:
twenty years ago today steyn new criterion

not sure what a hero is- musicians/writers are important though and give us great pleasure-
I just read articles by both of the gentlemen you listed- deep stuff/can't say i agree with all of it,but a lot of it makes sense to me

I do agree,
Woodstock was just a concept brought to some gentlemen who posted an advert in the New York Times for a money making plan using "Unlimited Capital." Michael Lang approached them and wah-lah. Oh, and many bands REFUSED to go on until they had cash in hand.
You have to remember the artists can sing and preach whatever they want to seem good, it's just music.
It's a sad truth for me as I thoroughly enjoy much of the music from the 50s-60.

Paul Kanter still at the top of his game. The rest of the bad rocks. And Diana Mangano - love her voice.

why did marty leave? i heard he was lat broke now and regrets ever leaving. is this true?

Marty is still a member of Jefferson Starship.
At this Europe tour in 2005 he wasn't there for private reasons.

The jefferson airplane version from the album Volunteers blows csn away. It is like comparing chicken shit and chicken salad.
hillcrestjh 3 years ago 2
i agree that the airplane version is the best ever- but csn's version is superb and calling it otherwise is a disservice-
fezzappa 3 years ago
Once you hear the recorded version on CSN, all renditions pale in comparison.

csn copied it-

There seems to be some dispute as to whether Kantner contributed to writing this song. The JA version gives him credit, the CSN version doesn't.
