A touching song - full of pathos - and your comment, about the old man you used to listen to on the corner, and then disappearing out of your life - is even more touching. Sing Me Back Home. God bless you all.
i was listening to bobby bare singing about detroit city a while back and realized that there aren't many folks close to me left back home and if i was to go visit them, i'd have to go to the next life... that kinda freaked me out
I remember a few years back when I moved to the city I would visit the downtown area where the nightlife would come alive every weekend, nearly every night when I passed by the corner there was an elderly gentleman playing his guitar and singing this song for money. I would chat for a while with the old man until we parted ways to go home, this would happen every Friday, until one month when he didn't show up, turns out he had passed away! I listen to this song and I remember my old friend!
haha i had i dream about this song last night. my mom was bringin me home but i was not sittin in the truck i was in the back. man lifes to short so might as well live life to the fullest and have a blast n explore the world before its to late. u never know when ur gonna leave this world. so have fun while u can!!!!
This song is hard for me to listen to since I was listening to it when I got a phone call that my father had passed away. Beautiful song, but it brings back bad memories for me.
I love country songs and I especially love Merle Haggard (: I am also in the process of getting my boyfriend to love country songs too lol btw, I'm 20! lol
i love th eold country boys they flood my memories of my mom and dad and all my aunts and uncles that have passed...forever apart of my life! thanks guys
ahhh, Merle - You make my memories come alive. You were as much a part of my growing up years as any of my aunts and uncles. Love your music. We sang this and many others at every family get together we ever had.
Johnny Cash Merle Haggard George Jones. Lord, if we gave you Beiber, Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas will you return Tammy Wynette, Johnny Cash and Charlie Rich?
HEY!!!! All of you so called country music singers, producers, and radio stations listen here THIS is country music. This is one of the true kings of country music. Listen and learn!
There is nothing like a living legend. I am in the tween age...36 that I've been able to see Hank Jr, George Jones (many times), Waylon, Willie, Merle, and thank god the new breed finally coming along like J.J. !
Have to agree with MrGerardnl....country music isn't country anymore. Haven't followed it for 30+ years...everyone sounds and looks the same. Someone puts on a cowboy hat and sings a pop song...all the sudden he's country. Haggard is one of the greatest music artists ever. Glad to see he's turned his life around. Believe it or not, I saw him in a Denny's at 3am in Greeley, CO in the mid '80's....drunk as a skunk and with a lady "fan" that was a drunk as him. He looks much better now.
@Alamator Well if that is your opinion then it is very obvious that you have not even listened to todays country:p It is not the same as the good old classics.. But it is far, far, far from pop.. And they do not at all sound the same...
@Alamator This is about the best quote from a country fan,the greats like tom t, merle, buck owens johnny will always be with us god bless them all.i will love tom tom t halls music+merle forever
when i was 7 years old i ran into mr. haggard at a truck stop in tenesseee i was ridin with my pappy n i shook his hand n my pappy did n we sat n talked for a bit i woulda loved to stay n chat but we hada get a load of steel down to louisiana he was a great man n will always be R.I.P Mr. Haggard
A #1 hit for Merle Haggard on the Country & Western charts. It was the 132nd #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. It was also the first new #1 C&W hit of 1968. And it was no doubt that Merle Haggard, like Buck Owens & Sonny James, was becoming a force on the Country Music scene.
this song gives you an idea what happens next..sounds scary uh?we know they made a mistake...but dont u think they should get forgiveness and 2nd chance...save money ..../??????????????????????????????

Im 17 years old, I love this music. I feel that newer country is Nothing like the old stuff. People who dont listen to this music have NO idea what they are missing. Merle is one of the best.
What an unbelievably great Merle Haggard is. Who, while listening to this song and Merle's rendition of it, can't but help imagine they're actually watching the events the song describes, such as seeing the condemned man walk to his execution? Mere Haggard = genius songwriter and superb, one-of-a-kind singer. A real American treasure he is!
I personally know the man who wrote this song but he never got credit for it because he sent it to Merle without a copyright. Merle may be a "good ole boy" But he's still a thief. I know the whole true story and the writer is still alive. His name is Ben Rutledge and he still lives in Campaign, Tn. He wrote this song with his brother in their last visit on death row the night before he was executed for a crime their other brother committed.

@NumberOneBubbleyumm dude brantley gilbert and jamie johnson are the shit they write there music and sing it just like it should be fuck havin some 1 else write ur songs. there upcomming legends.
@dorse09 My dad plays guitar with Haggards guitarist and is going to see him live next month. he is very much alive and still performing. Hopefully his music will never die as many hope for him as well.
@dorse09 Actually alot of older country artist don't like the newer stuff. But I am glad a few newer younger artist are singing some older C/W sound songs today. Hell we still have George Strait he doesn't have have the old, old sound but he still sounds like the early to mid 1980s sound... :)
A touching song - full of pathos - and your comment, about the old man you used to listen to on the corner, and then disappearing out of your life - is even more touching. Sing Me Back Home. God bless you all.

@dorse09 Actually alot of older country artist don't like the newer stuff. But I am glad a few newer younger artist are singing some older C/W sound songs today. Hell we still have George Strait he doesn't have have the old, old sound but he still sounds like the early to mid 1980s sound... :)

@dorse09 Yes I agree that modern country is a talentless genre that produces absolute crap.
