I remember a few years back when I moved to the city I would visit the downtown area where the nightlife would come alive every weekend, nearly every night when I passed by the corner there was an elderly gentleman playing his guitar and singing this song for money. I would chat for a while with the old man until we parted ways to go home, this would happen every Friday, until one month when he didn't show up, turns out he had passed away! I listen to this song and I remember my old friend!

Have to agree with MrGerardnl....country music isn't country anymore. Haven't followed it for 30+ years...everyone sounds and looks the same. Someone puts on a cowboy hat and sings a pop song...all the sudden he's country. Haggard is one of the greatest music artists ever. Glad to see he's turned his life around. Believe it or not, I saw him in a Denny's at 3am in Greeley, CO in the mid '80's....drunk as a skunk and with a lady "fan" that was a drunk as him. He looks much better now.

Who, while listening to this song and Merle's rendition of it, can't but help imagine they're actually watching the events the song describes, such as seeing the condemned man walk to his execution? Mere Haggard = genius songwriter and superb, one-of-a-kind singer. A real American treasure he is!

I personally know the man who wrote this song but he never got credit for it because he sent it to Merle without a copyright. Merle may be a "good ole boy" But he's still a thief. I know the whole true story and the writer is still alive. His name is Ben Rutledge and he still lives in Campaign, Tn. He wrote this song with his brother in their last visit on death row the night before he was executed for a crime their other brother committed.
