  • A touching song - full of pathos - and your comment, about the old man you used to listen to on the corner, and then disappearing out of your life - is even more touching. Sing Me Back Home. God bless you all.

  • We are pilgrims. Our home is the ♡ of God.

  • How about we enjoy all music and quit bitching about what is better?

  • i was listening to bobby bare singing about detroit city a while back and realized that there aren't many folks close to me left back home and if i was to go visit them, i'd have to go to the next life... that kinda freaked me out

  • Fantastic Singer Thanks

  • classic

  • Beautiful

  • I remember a few years back when I moved to the city I would visit the downtown area where the nightlife would come alive every weekend, nearly every night when I passed by the corner there was an elderly gentleman playing his guitar and singing this song for money. I would chat for a while with the old man until we parted ways to go home, this would happen every Friday, until one month when he didn't show up, turns out he had passed away! I listen to this song and I remember my old friend!

  • ... one of the first songs i'd learned how to play, love this man's music. thanks for sharing, take care... COA ...

  • ahhh, Merle - You make my memories come alive. You were as much a part of my growing up years as any of my aunts and uncles. Love your music. We sang this and many others at every family get together we ever had.

  • My father died of cancer in 08. His last words were "I want to go home to see mommy and daddy. CanI go now?" This song reminds me of that moment.

  • if you dont like this song theres something wrong your head, heart and you're tone deaf.

  • @jhartist123 ONE OF THE VERY BEST.

  • Have to agree with MrGerardnl....country music isn't country anymore. Haven't followed it for 30+ years...everyone sounds and looks the same. Someone puts on a cowboy hat and sings a pop song...all the sudden he's country. Haggard is one of the greatest music artists ever. Glad to see he's turned his life around. Believe it or not, I saw him in a Denny's at 3am in Greeley, CO in the mid '80's....drunk as a skunk and with a lady "fan" that was a drunk as him. He looks much better now.

  • @Alamator Well if that is your opinion then it is very obvious that you have not even listened to todays country:p It is not the same as the good old classics.. But it is far, far, far from pop.. And they do not at all sound the same...

  • @Alamator This is about the best quote from a country fan,the greats like tom t, merle, buck owens johnny will always be with us god bless them all.i will love tom tom t halls music+merle forever

  • Merle Haggard is still alive.

  • The Ten who dislike this are COMMIES!!!!

  • Love the Hag!!!

  • when i was 7 years old i ran into mr. haggard at a truck stop in tenesseee i was ridin with my pappy n i shook his hand n my pappy did n we sat n talked for a bit i woulda loved to stay n chat but we hada get a load of steel down to louisiana he was a great man n will always be R.I.P Mr. Haggard

  • @TheRedneckboy1996 he's not dead Yet

  • @SuperSnarla what do you mean "yet"

careful how you talk bout' merle haggard

  • he doesnt sing at concerts anymore though.

  • merle finally honored by the president couldnt happen to a better man

  • Sir Merle Haggard---The greatest country singer to ever walk this earth--Anyone disagree? Case closed?

  • My dad's favourite artist, can't blame him. This is real music.

  • real. country.

  • 10 people got denied by the Warden.

  • I believe modern country still has some life in it. Everything Gary Allen does is fantastic.

  • I'm not very impressed about the 10 People who don't like this Song.

  • hahahaha merle is still very much alive! Gosh, people are stupid. Merle is my hero

  • You don't have to be an outlaw to love the outlaws prayer

  • Grerat song.

  • A #1 hit for Merle Haggard on the Country & Western charts. It was the 132nd #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. It was also the first new #1 C&W hit of 1968. And it was no doubt that Merle Haggard, like Buck Owens & Sonny James, was becoming a force on the Country Music scene.

  • this song gives you an idea what happens next..sounds scary uh?we know they made a mistake...but dont u think they should get forgiveness and 2nd chance...save money ..../??????????????????????????????

  • he's a corker ain't he, if were for the Hag, there wouldn't be any country music

  • Why is everyone commenting on "dorse09"'s comments?? He/she is probably still wanting similac..or hanging of his/her Mother's XXX. LOL! Dont comment on what he/she has to say cuz they are just looking for some attention. We...who listen to this music, know that it is GREAT music. Don't even waste your time on commenting to negative thoughts...

  • real country is dead....

  • the 11 dislikers are probably toby keith or those other fake country guys fan

  • @MrGerardnl

I read somewhere that Toby, along with George Strait and Alan Jackson, is one of the few modern country singers Merle respects. Of course that was on Wikipedia so the info could possibly be falsified.

  • @MrGerardnl Yes, Merle is as real as can be. A classic Man. God bless him

  • @MrGerardnl iam not fake but my sound aint so good but i try

  • @MrGerardnl Yeah. Couldn't be put better! Merle - What a voice, what a man! If that ain't country you can kiss my a..! :)

  • @MrGerardnl toby keith is a great country singer... its the ones like aldean them country rockers that ruin it...

  • I was raised on the music of Merle. Sure brings back a lot of good memories.

Thank you for sharing Merle with us :)

  • Boxcar Willie does a great raw version of this on yt. No production or fancy recording - of all the versions of this tune Willies is the best for me. Shalom!

  • yup they should play these songs more, there pretty good

  • This is such a classic!! I miss all the outlaws. This was country!!

  • Don't forget about Waylon and Jonnhy

  • 9 people didnt get sang home before their execution.

  • What an unbelievably great Merle Haggard is. Who, while listening to this song and Merle's rendition of it, can't but help imagine they're actually watching the events the song describes, such as seeing the condemned man walk to his execution? Mere Haggard = genius songwriter and superb, one-of-a-kind singer. A real American treasure he is!

  • I personally know the man who wrote this song but he never got credit for it because he sent it to Merle without a copyright. Merle may be a "good ole boy" But he's still a thief. I know the whole true story and the writer is still alive. His name is Ben Rutledge and he still lives in Campaign, Tn. He wrote this song with his brother in their last visit on death row the night before he was executed for a crime their other brother committed.

  • He was great!

  • Why isn't Merle coming to Holland? :-) He's only touring in the U.S.A :-(

  • Very much alive - just take a look at the tour dates on his website!

  • i think if merle was alive today, he wouldn't like to what has come to country music today, because it sounds like pop and so many have ruined its soul

  • @dorse09 For your information, Merle is still alive.

  • @dorse09 when did he die?!

  • @JonahBlack100 he hasn't, dont worry

  • every time i hear this song it remembers me wen i was in prison for 22 years strait but now its different. keep it up merle

  • @dorse09 An interesting point I'd like to express: The production style of this recording is very pop compared to pop records of the same era (1968), especially in the drums and the string arrangements. It's all a matter of perspective.

  • @dorse09 LMAO

Tell whoever it is that told you of Merle's death to step away from the crack pipe. Merle is alive and kicking.

  • @dorse09 Damn dude don't be a killing the Hag,that aint cool worth a shit!!

  • @dorse09 He's still alive

  • @dorse09 how could you post something like this , with out checking things out first??,,, check, then post

  • @dorse09 Actually alot of older country artist don't like the newer stuff. But I am glad a few newer younger artist are singing some older C/W sound songs today. Hell we still have George Strait he doesn't have have the old, old sound but he still sounds like the early to mid 1980s sound... :)

  • @dorse09 Yes I agree that modern country is a talentless genre that produces absolute crap.
