I don't think so... every kind of music can be as beautiful as this score when it is well done. But Michael Kamen did it so well so that seems perfect, almost unbeatable in large compositions of our time. (sorry for my English, I'm French...)
pop culture like bryan adams destroys the very essence of music, the essence that brings the emotion and brings tears, no words are necessary when you composed a beautiful melody, an orchestra of over 100 musicians playing a theme composed by a genius is perfection along with the film images, there is no pop culture than this feeling. kamen with his music will be here forever
@originstories I did actually know him personally, my father was a friend of his and we met several times when I was very young.I am still in my early twenties know but I have been to his house recently and all the gold records are casually hanging in the toilet of his notting hill house.
Anyone else hears that this obviously is the Bryan Adams - Everything I do I do it for you tune or whatever it's name is? Haha, someone stole from the other.
Michael Kamen's score to Prince of Thieves was the pinnacle moment in my life at the movie theater that afternoon where I decided to be a film composer.
He was a musical genius, from his days in Juilliard , thru the New York Rock and Roll Ensemble days, to his career as a composer and arranger for movies. A very accomplished oboist as well. Plus, an interesting, complicated, nice guy.
Damn it's a great tragedy for movie music, first Jerry Goldsmith and then Michael Kamen, i will kill myself if a Hans Zimmer will die ! (hope it'll be a loong time before that happens)
I worked on this session with three of my best mates. We were stage setup hands on this and setup everything you see on the scoring stage while this session was being recorded. I have video of all this which I'll post when I get it transfered off the VHS tapes. A wonderful experience. which I will never forget.
Is it just me or does portions of this score pop up everywhere?? I seem to remember hearing it during various movie previews and when production company logos are shown. It is, by far, one of my favorite movie scores. It's so moving and emotional. One of the reasons why I love this movie so much (cuz it's not because Kevin does a great job acting! LOL)
What a brilliant composer. These guys are so "unsung" in favor of pop artist tripe.
Can you believe that Bryan Adams and Mutt Lang harrassed Michael Kamen over this music, claiming that THEY "wrote" the song, and demanding more and more royalties???
After all the genius work Kamen put into it, that's how pop stars treat him... SHAME!
Hold on a second. What Kamen did with the song was truly amazing, moving and wonderful however, Bryan Adams and Mutt Lange WROTE the music. In a court of law, they would be entitled to royalties from what Kamen did. Imagine you wrote something, it is used in a movie, and someone changes it and takes credit for it. Feel the same way? Would you not want the royalties due to you for every use of that song? I would.
Upon further review, the penalty has been removed! lol Bloggerjoe is correct, and I am wrong. Kamen wrote the melody, Bryan and Mutt added to it, added lyrics(not crappy, a truly lovely song imo) and if they harrassed Kamen, deserve a shot to the nutz
LOL... such humility is rare on youtube and I commend you for it, good sir.
We'll have to differ on the quality of lyrics from Messrs. Adams and Lange.
Bryan Adams was never one to show mastery of language arts. Who can forget such lyrical "gems" as "I need somebody... Everybody needs somebody..." Or those endless "songwriting 101" rhymes like "tonight, all right, stars are bright, lie for you, die for you, try for you, blah..."
And don't get me started on Mr. "Pour Some Sugar On Me" Lange...
@bloggerjoe right, people are shit. but it's also shit to say ''These guys are so "unsung" in favor of pop artist tripe''. michael kamen PWNS john ''by the number heartstring pulling schmaltz'' williams
Michael Kamen was truly a musical genius as well as the most prolific composer in modern times but also a kind friend and a dedicated husband and father. His music is undoubtedly the food of love :-)
A lot of the classical soundtrack plays in EXTREMELY well with the highs and lows and high action and slow points and even falling and rising action of the plot of good films so trying to find out how it syncs up so well. and this answered that.
This is exactly what I was seeking to help answer my question of "how do directors and composers synchronize music with the falling/rising action, highs and lows of plot and action". Kamen seems awesome too.
I deliverd his mail for years, whilst he was living in london, most days i would see him walking his dog, and he would allways stop to say hello,"Class", a real nice guy, the world is lonely without him, rest in peace Mr Kamen (Michael)
Actually the performance is excellent. What you're hearing was recorded by a video camera, which doesn't capture the performance and overall blend very well.
Session musicians never see the music they are going to record until the day of the recording. They have to sight-read, and are expected to play it through perfectly the first time (which they usually do). Can you do that?
Blah Blah Blah. Look come on, the "can you do that" argument holds no water with me or anyone. All I said was that the overture (on CD at least) was performed at 40% energy and speed which this great riproaring fanfare requires. Alot of orchestras play perfect in the score, like the London Symphony Orchestra and the Hollywood Studio Symphony, but not this one? You can tell where the mistakes happen by the musicians. I know they are human, but they could have played it again and corrected it.
i had the privilige of meeting michael and getting to know him. a gentler, more luminous soul you will never meet. we lost someone of great depth, light, an joy when he departed. long live his memory!
This movie's score was extraordinary! As a kid, falling in love with this couple and this movie, I could never really put a finger on why I loved it so much. Now I know, that the sound and melody attached to any image can either make it or break it. My fave movie ever, even till this day :-) Long live Kamen's legacy... R.I.P.

By the way, does anyone know who did the voice over?
MultiEvan 2 years ago
I dont think we need to argue who wrote what, its well known that Kamen was a hugely talented composer and Bryan Adams is a talented songwriter.
Thing is that writing for orchestra is different and thats I'm sure where Kamen's talent came into play, whether he wrote the original notes or not.

NOT TRUE... Michael Kamen was a music composer and he wrote the MUSIC for the whole film, including the main theme and song melody.
Bryan Adams and Mutt Lange wrote those crappy lyrics... after being handed a gorgeous melody on a silver platter.
Adams and Lange were all pissed off when Kamen refused to be bullied by their corporate lawyers, demanding a bigger cut.
Then in true rock and roll "asshole" style, they had a donkey delivered to Kamen just to upset him.
Yeah... nice guys...
