instructables com(insert period in the space) has at least 2 projects that use this series of ICs, but you are on your own if you want to drive anything other than LEDs.

How much time and money did you spend on these?

I've built such a VU meter 1,5 metres high with CCFL's.

Afterwards LED's would've been a better choice, the PSU pushes out 10A at 12V.

There are one or two leds per "block". Depends on the color.

Red and orange are not very bright colors, so for those two colors I took two leds per block. For green and blue I used only one.

the only thing that is a little vomplex is the power suppply for bigger lamps.....thats it....the whole chematic isnt really a problem

You're right. I didn't mention it's hard to do if you know about elektronics, but I've had people who wanted to build those VU-meters and didn't know anything about electronics.

im just curious as to what input type are you using? just a wire to the amp?

I used the "record out" from the amplifier (RCA connector).

It can be replaced by an electret microphone.

For those VU-meters I used 2 hyperflux LEDs (2 x 50mA) per color block.
