i notice that you guys do all your thrusting, with both hands at fixed points along the shaft, this makes it harder to change your range and means you have to get closer to deal a blow all good for the swordsman
we use the punch method sliding the spear through the forward hand allows us to get moe speed and more reach
@elgostine We call that "pool cueing" and we try to avoid it with spears. Of course, that is how you get the extra reach and deliver a solid blow with a spear, but it also takes away your control over the tip and how much force you use... as a safety concern, we try to maintain a two handed thrust as most of our fighters are wearing no armor.

We don't do that, AND no decent spearman would ever follow his thrust enough to allow his tip to go to the ground. This is pretty much what happens. The sword and board guy charges, presses his shield against the spear and kills the spearman. About the only things that can go wrong are a spearman that runs backward as fast as the swordsman runs forward, or the swordsman getting hit on the way in. Oh, and if the spearman is stronger he can shove the sword guy away for a moment.
I was in the SCA, and that is exactly what I did. Unless the polearmsman can run backward as fast as the sword and board guy can run forward he'll have a hard time. That's why so many polearmsmen have a mace or a short sword on a lanyard, for then they are forced into close combat.

@skallagrimm as much as you hate to admit it, Skallagrimm is partially correct. If you were quick enough, with low enough weight, you could in fact push him off his feet. Of course, you're not trying to down each other and kill each other, so that is slightly irrelevant,: however the fact that you're not trying to kill each other why the spear is not at it's best as you said. So, in actuality, you are both correct. I'd have to say, you're more correct than he is, however.

You know what the stereotypical "Grim Reaper" carries and correct word of the sickle shaped weapon (in which was a farming tool as well) Kusarigama a scythe is not a spear and you still know jack about Ninjutsu. Again I stress huge bladed Kusarigama was rarely used,

What does this have to do with vikings? also scythe is not a spear its a farming implement and it was not used by the Ninja. You are thinking of Kusarigama a sickle form not schythe. In this form there is a exaggerated size of a battlefield one but rarely used. Also no it can not break swords and was mostly would be made of Iron or poor quality steel since Ninjas were mostly peasants and couldn't afford high quality steel.

Yeah,we have a group of mid age enthusiasts here in Serbia too.They use the traditional Serb weapons of the time.Bloody heavy things,I tell you!Apart from melee and horse back fighting they also practice "siege" warfare,but with the lack of functional castles,they make do with just manning the onagers :)
