Detroit Locker Rear, TruTrac Front. I don't think the front ever was disengaged during this climb, you do, however, have to sometimes tap the break to engage it if a wheel is in the air.
UK towing limit has nothing to do with mechanical limitation of Defender. It's tow and payload capacity not even close to Dodge Ram that for specifically designed for such purpose. It's heavier with by far more powerful power pack.
I own a 2003 Disco since May, 2006, with some factory warranty remaining, and I used it only for a oil pan leak fixing. I heard a lot of bad comments about LR, but, believe me, you have to own, and dialy drive one of this magnificent vehicles to learn what´s the real quality in the SUV market. I agree about the extra money needed for scheduled manteinance and for some minor repairs, but it worth it.
Well you could buy a Honda for reliabilty but I don't think you are going to go where this LR went. LR's may have more problems than other makes but doesn't mean they are breaking down on you everyday. I have owned 3 of them and I was never left stranded. Owning one is worth the little problems they give you. And they have a great support group online. Something breaks, you go online and ask what to do and you can usually have an answer in 10 min. I will never own another make of SUV.
i have a 99 and i havent really had any problems with it. we got it for 1000 dollars with 124,000 miles on it, had no transmission- got one for $600 and works like a dream, it had been sitting for months and started right up, it had small problems that easily were fixed, (door latch stuck, bulb out, things like that) they arent bad cars if you treat them right
my dads landrover discovery 1992 has done 180,000 miles no sirvices and always starts 1st time any problems can normally be fixed in mins it ttook him 20 min to replace a altenator yesturday
He guys I am thinking aout buying a 2001 Land Rover Discovery for a winter vehicle. Can you guys let me know the pros and cons and what to look for when I purchase this SUV. I would really appreciate it...
one of the best diesels i have come across is the first generation powerstoke. all though the chevey 6.2l diesel was tougher than nails it just didnt have enough power unless insainly geared
Grunt under the hood would have only hurt you there that is where your technical driving comes in i call it tallent but the chevy and ford pickups were made with alot more suspension travel and fram twist thus putting the tires to the ground providing four wheel traction
Your old chevy or ford is built for Americans, i.e the need for technical driving skill is just replaced with lots of grunt under the hood, unfortunately the vehicle dimensions are massively widened to cater for the typical American backside which effectively prevents their use on the narrow backwater byways found in Europe whereas the LandRover excels.

Granted some Americans buy full size pickups for no reason. Others can't afford buying and maintain Rovers so they chose US made trucks.

I love Landrovers but prob. wouldn't buy one: surveys apparently show poor quality. Wikipedia:
last: US J.D. Power Survey 05;
2004, dethroned Kia as least reliable nameplate, swapped places in 2005.
August 2006, last place, J.D. Power US .
last: 2006 Consumer Reports (US) survey.
second last:2007 Consumer Reports (US) survey.
