@SputniksArmy True, but both stickings will allow you to express the phrase differently when orchestrating around the kit. It also feels a little bit different.
If you can make the same hand motion but hit with 2 strokes, and can move the hand at same speed when your playing doubles as if you were playing singles, you can be able to play much faster. Besides, i gives you a more floating sound than the singles.... jeez...
@frederik0101 There really is no difference, just more effort put into doing complex things like RLRRLRRLLRL or something rather than acheiving the same sound by doing RLRLRLs.
Dude this is a really great lesson. Usually when I see these fills or solos theyre being played by Buddy Rich at light speed. Thanks for breaking things down into playable parts to practice!
Hello your lessons really help me create a drum solo Good work mate., and btw is your kit mic'd-in ? they really sound good especially the snare and even without muffler.,
can i request you to make a tutorial on how to tune a kit ? i suck at that part :( THANKS!
@steraeris That's one way to hold them indeed. There are many other ways that will give you different feels, and help execute different strokes (i.e. pointer and middle finger grip might be great for a delicate orchestral touch. Gripping w/ pinky and ring finger are good for a heavy feel)
I love that you keep the base roll simple and compact. Double-stick + accent = Rhythm A. Change accent = B. 4 even strokes. End. You make no style references, add nothing.
And then you build fills and complex solos with accents falling across the kit. And it makes sense! Ohhhhhhhh. The accents are BUILT out of the two odd-sticked rhythms, not crammed in! Now it's the video of someone playing the roll endlessly that doesn't make sense.

@christc221 Thomas is a great drummer. I checked your page, what you got to show? I rarely hear accomplished musicians speak this way to other musicians. If you really are so much more educated then you wouldn't feel the need to talk others down, YOU WOULD GIVE SUGGESTIONS. Jealousy is what I hear when all you can say is "your left hand is atrocious" or you mocking the phrases he uses to explain triplets.
@volk5wag3n I actually prefer American grip, which is essentially a compromise between the two@Geekusadrummer is right in that you use different grips for different situations,German is better suited for harder hitting situations (marching, rock, etc) while French is best suited for softer situations. Learning all 3 will allow you to flow in and out of them seamlessly, no matter the situation. Keep practicin'!

du skal låse din venstre hånd med pege fingeren..;O) det er kun i drumlines man ik låser.. men gør du ik det på sættet taber du den(måske) når du bruger power
@rstroker530 the way he held the stick with the left hand yeah its traditional and the way u hold the stick with ur hands facing down like his right hand was thats called match gripping
What practice drum pad are you using? It looks great and doesn't seem as bouncy as some others I've seen. I'm working on deveopling higher speed and I find the bouncier they are the lazier your hands get. Any tips etc. Thanks!
Real Feel HQ. Most pads like that are going to offer a similar feel though. I recommend them, and I recommend playing on the black side for less resistance. The rubber is very bouncy, and your hands will indeed get lazy :)
I really like the snare solo you play at 7:10, as it sounds quite Buddy Rich like. What patterns are you playing here, as you're mixing it with what you showed in the lesson? Also, what accents do you use for the solo? Great drumming
I thought double stroke roll accents mean that you should be playing double strokes throughout? because what ur doing is actually not double strokes but rll rrl, and you are accenting the r and l respectively. what im asking is whether double stroke roll accents mean Rrll lLrr rRlL RRlL or something like that. meaning that strokes within the double stroke are accented and not accenting single strokes within a double stroke. sorry for this long winded question :X hope someone understands
Yeah, I don't know if you can really call it a roll that way I am using it in the video. A roll would be rrllrrllrrllrrll. I just used the title for the video because it kindof sounds like a double stroke roll, but with accents. Though it's not technically played that way.
interesting video! thanks....you explained it very clear and with alot of ideas or suggestions on how to do my own thing with it. It should help me with my phrasing.
Its my opinion that you have a way with breaking down the basic roll rudiments unlike I've ever seen before(A+B RRLL) or as the five stroke roll. Good job!
The best way to do this is to start extremely slow, concentrating on what each hand is doing. Once you are comfortable with playing it really slow, and you can take your mind out of it a little bit, once it feels more natural, then slowly increase the tempo. Continue increasing the tempo until desired speed is achieved. Patience, and consistent practice are also valuable. Good luck!
Argh this is super hard no matter how much i concentrate it just complety copies unless i dont play the steady beat when i do the other beat but il keep trying.
Hey i was wondering how do you play two tottally different things with both of your hands for example if i wanna play ♪♪♫♫♪ with my left hand and just play a steady ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ beat with my right hand. Well the hand that plays the steady beat when i play the other tottally copies the other, and i can only do beats when i stop playing on 1 of my sticks i dont know how to help it i probably explained this wierd but il make another comment i guess and il try ot make more sense of it.
Go pick up "Progressive Steps to Syncopation for the Modern Drummer (Ted Reed) ." from your local music store. It has practical independence drills similar to what you're trying to do. It really starts slow too, so I think it'll be helpful. For example, the first 2 pages are simply quarter notes/rests with both hands. Also, it's only like $8 (cost of a sandwich)
Oh dear, be sorry for the poor animals... haha im jokin man but you should be able to rise above my petty insults being the big stud you are =] Happy paradiddles
I was having huge troubles counting Rll + rrL + rrll because I thought it was going from triplets to 16ths. I guess I missed how the accents are the quarter note pulse first time around. GREAT VIDEO!! This was hella useful
You are the best...wow keep it up...am geting improved by u..

@geekusadrummer Your counting there is correct however maybe just saying TA will be easier. Not such a mouthful.

I love this thanks for showing it to me. My drum tutor calls it the Buddy Rich Paradiddle-diddle ^^

What practice drum pad are you using? It looks great and doesn't seem as bouncy as some others I've seen. I'm working on deveopling higher speed and I find the bouncier they are the lazier your hands get. Any tips etc. Thanks!
naechancelad 2 years ago
Real Feel HQ. Most pads like that are going to offer a similar feel though. I recommend them, and I recommend playing on the black side for less resistance. The rubber is very bouncy, and your hands will indeed get lazy :)

I really like the snare solo you play at 7:10, as it sounds quite Buddy Rich like. What patterns are you playing here, as you're mixing it with what you showed in the lesson? Also, what accents do you use for the solo? Great drumming

I thought double stroke roll accents mean that you should be playing double strokes throughout? because what ur doing is actually not double strokes but rll rrl, and you are accenting the r and l respectively. what im asking is whether double stroke roll accents mean Rrll lLrr rRlL RRlL or something like that. meaning that strokes within the double stroke are accented and not accenting single strokes within a double stroke. sorry for this long winded question :X hope someone understands
andrevth 2 years ago
Yeah, I don't know if you can really call it a roll that way I am using it in the video. A roll would be rrllrrllrrllrrll. I just used the title for the video because it kindof sounds like a double stroke roll, but with accents. Though it's not technically played that way.

I can do the steady beat but then when i do the other beat both of my hands do this.
♪♪♫♫♪
Vartex 2 years ago
The best way to do this is to start extremely slow, concentrating on what each hand is doing. Once you are comfortable with playing it really slow, and you can take your mind out of it a little bit, once it feels more natural, then slowly increase the tempo. Continue increasing the tempo until desired speed is achieved. Patience, and consistent practice are also valuable. Good luck!
geekusadrummer 2 years ago
