At work, I didn't have a problem with re-installing, because professional Windows versions come with an installation media. At home, I use Ubunu for more than 5 years now. Before I had a Windows installation media at home, too. And I had to use it several times, especially when I exchanged some hardware components [e.g. mainboard or graphics card ;)]...
I am a real pc power user - currently I am using Windows 7 at work (until today) and Ubuntu at home. I work as a Software Engineer and I need much software for everyday work. Yes, Win7 is much more stable than any Windows version before. But I feel better with Ubuntu - that's why I will start using Ubuntu at work tomorrow, too. I know the difference between Linux and a distro, but I use both as synonyms since nobody (but some nerds) cares about a kernel, but an OS, when speaking of a desktop OS.
There are macfags, winfags but the absolute worst are ubuntufags.
Ubuntu is crap, I'd rather recommend LinuxMint as a training wheels distro (and yes it's based on Ubuntu, but the extras Clem adds make it pwn Ubuntu in the hindquarters)
OpenSuse's another good choice or you could be a big baller like me and use Debian Sid...!
The only way I know to screw up Ubuntu is when you download a windows program, try to make to work with wine, but it won't work, so you start messing with crap and using sudo commands that you shouldn't use unless you know wtf they do and end up screwing ur OS up. Ubuntu is so fucking stable that you can shut down ALL THE PROCESSES, and then manually restart all of them (or restart your computer) and it will still work fine.
"Oh wait when does it ever work!!!"...... all the time you jackass... there are thousands of videos showing various distros of linux working just fine & dandy on youtube, and much fewer videos of people (like yourself) which have somehow inexplicably messed up an OS and claim it is somehow everyone else's fault. Do the math...
Dear good sir, one should not attempt to use the compiz-fusion configuration manager without first consulting the user guide. Although most of us can figure it out almost immediately, user guides were indeed invented for the general public... you know, "just in case"
First download a recent distribution of linux (except Ubuntu 11.4 try 10.04 or earlier)
After you downloaded the ISO file, use IMGBURN or a similar application to burn the ISO
onto a disk (you can not just burn it straight you need an application that reads the ISO and burns it like IMGBURN.) Restart you computer with the disc in the drive and install the operating system.
Afterwards learn how to install "Compiz-Fusion" and its manager program.
also there are a few applications that are kind of similar for windows such as DesktopCube and Deskahedron. I am sure that if you google "cube destop" you will find a few.
@IntelgratedShiznit You mean Ubuntu CAN BE just point and click, considering you can use a terminal for everything as well if you want to.
The GUI is there to get people to not be so scared. The Terminal is there for anyone who wants to use it. They're giving you a choice, and there's nothing wrong with having options. Ubuntu is, in theory, a distro for any user, not just "regular users".
Also, Linux HAS NEVER been an OS for "smart people" OR an OS for "regular users". Linux is a kernel.
Hey, do you know how works your cars? And how to repair them if they broke?.
I don't think so.
So shut the fuck up! Stop bashin people who doesn't like linux. You're such a shame for the linux community. Dumb and blind fanatics. Xorg sucks, sucks a lot. You never say that. Both functionality and the code itself.
BTW, I used linux, and i know bash, C, java and some python. So I know how much sucks xorg, xfree86 drivers, ati drivers, gnome in general, and some aplications. Well, i cant write more.
@kmk1729 So true, it's sad seeing the Linux community bash people like that. It's one of the few reasons people switch back to Windows. Assuming people are programmer. I'm even a programmer, I know C, I would never try to fix the Linux Kernel because that's way above me.
@dotNetZombie Look the comments above. The community has the virus of snobism. It's understandable, but not excusable. We need to be better persons. That's why in general i like the comunity of archlinux. It's one of the most educated and not-bashing in the linux world.
The linux kernel is way above from the majoritie of us. You need years to begin to understand it.
@kmk1729 Like MrTabby5000 comments: "linux is for smart people, not the majority of dumb computer user, point and click, thats being lazy." How in th hell did that get voted so high. Human beings would like to do everything the easy way. The computer should be doing all the work for them, not the other way around.
@dotNetZombie Well, bashing is common in all the communities even on game forums when people are lazy and ask questions that have been asked a million times or demand answers like they own the world or something. LEARN to SEARCH before you ask any question. With a multiple of Search engines on the web, atleast take the time to do a search. Most probably the answer is already there.
linux is for natural born computer geeks, only one in a million.... you must have great knowledge in computer studies to understand what linux is all about.. linux is not for ordinary desktop user so far.. for users who still rely on desktop application please go back to where you came from...
@MrTabby5000 you're not smart just because you use linux. And most people don't have all day to write 99999 commands in Terminal to achieve something that could've been done by a few clicks. This is because of the lack of the engineering in most Linux-based systems. It's a pain in the ass for desktop and not functional at all compared to Windows and OSX. Don't blame the user if the OS is shit, man. Better use it for server operation only. That way it's useful.
@rmaucigasha Are you serous? Agreed that there are plenty of idiots using Linux and do just fine, but to say that UNIX based OS lack engineering or poorly designed is a true comment of ignorance. From the network stack to the memory manager Linux is much better designed, implemented and documented. The strength of Linux is its ability to be formed into the users needs. If windows fits your needs then use it. don't trash us Linux users just because you dont understand its purpose.
@en0x86 My comment was on the desktop incarnations of Linux OSs which aren't as functional and useful to the user on a client machine as other desktop OSs like OSX and Windows systems. They have a lot to improve in terms of user friendliness, design and convenience for desktop usage. On desktop platform the user cares about productivity, standards, warranty and so on and not about the core of the OS.
For servers and networking it's a miracle to have such a free solution.
@GeoNeilUK At that time, I used Kubuntu ~9.04. Upgrading to the next version led to some trouble many times before. The most likely reason for that is, that I use a few PPAs to get the newest version of some software. So I learned from that situation: I store all my own documents on a separate partition that is mounted at /media/data - I don't use my /home folder because it contains software (version) dependent configuration files. To upgrade, I format my system partition and make a new install.
Then I install all needed software by a simple command line: sudo apt-get install (k)ubuntu-restricted-extras vlc firefox thunderbird gimp audacity inkscape openshot ..... At the end I do some settings like desktop background and some application settings. All is done within about 2 hours. A complete upgrade is not faster, but you risk an unstable system. Now I use Ubuntu 11.04 and the workflow is completely the same - I think Gnome and Unity are much more stable than KDE today.
P.S. When I used Windows some years ago, I had to re-install it every 6-9 months to keep it working, too. There are three big differences, compared with using *ubuntu: 1. Windows is not free - I must pay for a badly working OS, 2. Re-installing Windows takes me up to one day (~10-12 hours), 3. There are many (little) things that make (my) life easier by using a Linux distribution. All major desktop environments have their own benefits (and handicaps) - including Windows!
@p1703 Quite often, when you but a PC, you don't get the option to reinstall Windows. No installation media, just a restore partition which is fantastic if your hard drive fails (meaning, yes, you end up having to BUY a copy of the OS that was pre-instsalled on your computer as some point, or switch to Linux) However, there Linux != Ubuntu, I actually do hate it when people make that mistake. I don't ever remember having to reinstall Windows other than a hard drive failure,
