Agreed, Tony. I'll just add one point: traditional TV is entirely one-way. No interaction. YouTube offers several interactive options: comments, messages, and video responses, as well as search tools to connect people with like interests. With those tools we are not necessarily just "broadcasting." We're "discussing."
TV doesn't build communities or develop friendships. YouTube does.
I have watched a bit of Houston Public Access and in all honesty, the quality is not that great. I see work that is more imaginative here on YouTube. In addition, a disadvantage with Public Access is the risk of political pressure. About a year ago, a city council person happened to catch a program late at night that disturbed them. The next day, he or she, I can't remember which, was threatening action to prevent the cable companies from carrying the content.
Excellent points. Your experience with television is evident in all of your productions making for an enjoyable and informative experience. The instant factor of youtube is quite in tune with the pulse of the western world today. I think this was the vision of many a pioneer including Bill Gates in his 1995 book describing the vision of something alot like youtube.
Incidently, I find myself reading TIME magazine and at the end of an article expecting to see a comment section. YouTube has been that much of an influence. Also, great lighting and black background! Gotta let me know one day what you use :) Thanks.
I'm still working on the lighting. I'm trying to come up with a simple way to just use regular desk lighting, so I can keep everything set and ready. Currently a ringlight and a daylight balanced tube under the monitor. Black Muslin is cheap and simple for the backdrop. Check photo backdrop on ebay. I use a Sony miniDV camcorder w/firewire to capture.

Gotta love those kneejerk local politics. Lots of things I miss about Houston, and some I don't. It's definately in the heart of the bible belt...

I think we've just scratched the surface of how this can be used. I'll have to check out that book.
