  • I have to say many of the previous comments are funny.Carlos Santana twice a talented as Allan Holdsworth? Fools better stop smoking whatever it is they're smoking! Save those few remaining brain cells!

  • virtuosity defined

  • True, his playing is better than most, but he has the advantage of being from another planet.

  • This music makes me want to ride a spaceship thru outer space at warp speed!!!

  • this is just it guys.... when you get to be the best you know all the "right" wrong notes to play and when.

  • im not sure that the rest of the band is close to keeping up with allan, hes just beyond them all...when allan had that trio w gary novak and capenter, that was fucking musical paradise

  • @vmi3301 I tend to find myself disgusted with musicians who are more interested in playing "guitar" than playing music. This is a main difference between a mediocre player and great player. The instrument is simply a tool to reach an ends, NOT THE ENDS IN ITSELF! When you say "this" is how an instrument is "suppose to sound like," I can't help but roll my eyes and die a little inside.

  • @Kuzalias Well played, sir.

  • @Kuzalias

Welcome to the world of guitar

  • @vmi3301 Mr. Benson's got quite a set of ears and I would wager that he has an appreciation and respect for Mr. Holdsworth as well.

  • @vmi3301 Oh the irony!

The fact is, George Benson heard a very young Allan Holdsworth rip holes in the space-time continuum in the 70s whilst playing with Tony Williams' New Lifetime band, and once he picked his jaw from the ground he persuaded CTI management to record this virtuoso.

  • @vmi3301 there is no predisposition of what guitar (or any instrument) should "sound like"...only opinion or prejudice.

  • @vmi3301 Imposing your opinion as absolute objective fact is the worst kind of creative imperialism. Get off your high horse and go watch a Benson vid instead.

  • I've been lucky enough to briefly meet Allan on two occasions and both times he was apologetic about his playing, he's never happy with what he's just done. He could have made millions (or at least a helluva lot of money) being someone's sideman chose not to do so, to follow the muse instead. His understanding of music theory/construction is more mystical than concrete, like Joe Zawinul or Miles Davis or John Coltrane; he knows it on a higher level than most mortals ever will. Respect, people.

  • @bbmusic1 Very true.

  • @bbmusic1 Very true

  • For the life of me I cannot understand why everyone thinks this guy is so good...I REALLY REALLY tried too. I listented to several examples...he just sounds like a boaring version of John Scofield to me. His musicians all seem to have much more musical talent than him. Maybe because I grew up on Carlos Santana and George Benson...idk.

  • @vmi3301 I'm having trouble deciding whether you're a troll or if this is funny.

  • @Kuzalias troll...

  • @Kuzalias it must be a troll. Santana?

  • @vmi3301 Well, that's because you have no ears, or no brain dude, sorry to say

  • @Listendudeok I have great ears...and a musid degree. All I hear is bad sythesized half notes....anyone that thinks this guy has talent is a victim of a case of emporer's new clothes...I have heard NOTHING by this guy that George Benson or John Scofield hasn't done better. Seriously...why is this guy's sound or style appealing in any way???

  • @vmi3301 You can't even spell music and you have a degree in music? LOL Why are you such a jealous douche bag? Allan Holdsworth created his own sound. Santana just plays Pentatonic scales, SOOO basic.

  • @DiatonicSoul Obviously it was just a typo. Name calling is the first step to admitting you are wrong. You can't even put an argument together about music, you just call nemes? What, are you in 6th grade? Obviously if you think Santana plays just pentatonic scales, you have zero grasp on music theroy. Santana plays funk, jazz, fusion, latin, and bluegrass. This hack plays keyboard sounding half notes not even suited for elevator music.

  • @vmi3301 Holdsworth plays with zero emotion, style, directon, or heart. It is just noise to fill up the air. It really is Yanni on guitar. Why is it appealing in any way?

  • @vmi3301 I conclude you must be under the delusion your opinions on the virtues & shortcomings of various forms of music are inherently objective. You should take care when making such statements, lest you appear daft. Also please refrain from making statements which are merely designed to create discord. Spirited discussion is encouraged, but don't go overboard putting down musicians you don't enjoy to make a point.

  • @Kuzalias I have yet to hear a musical reason why anything he plays is significant in any way. Why is playing half notes sounding like an 8th grader on a keyboard artistic? I actually tried to get into his playing, but I find absolutely zero inspiration or aesthetic value in his style or sound.

  • @vmi3301 Allan has always been one of my favorite artists, because I find his playing extremely beautiful. Although it's an acquired taste (his tone), I love the tone he coaxes out of his guitar. It's sweet, expressive and warm if slightly bitter...

  • @vmi3301 His musical statements are extremely beautiful. I love the playful opening motif at 00:05 - 00:10 and of course 00:45 - 00:58 is awe inspiring and the main reason I posted this clip. I love all of his note choices here. You can take Allan's songs and slow them down to half speed and slower and the songs are still beautiful, and every note remains meaningful. If you don't understand his musical languages, then how can anyone explain it to you? Just go and watch something else.

  • @vmi3301 Santana isn't even on the same level as Allan Holdsworth. I laugh at your burning jealousy LMAO

  • @DiatonicSoul I laugh at your inability to differentiate between real musical talent and what somebody told you is supposed to be good. Anyone in awe of Alan Holdsworh's playing is suffering from a serious case of emporor's new clothes..You have to do more than play random half notes sounding like a jr. kid on a keyboard to impress me. Look up Eric Johnson, George Benson, John Scofield, Carlos Santana, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Joe Pass, or Greg Howe to see talent worthy of praise on a guitar.

  • @vmi3301 All those guitarists you cite have all praised Holdsworth. Why do they hear something you don't?

  • @vmi3301 WHOAH! hack? if you dont get it, that dont mean it aint no good, bro.If you are frustrated and want to get it, chill out. Its ok not to like it but to say its crap...you went too far. The man is kinda like Coltrane ....not a mortal player, and his disdain for the pedestrian in music is not a reason to dislike his music. A beautiful human expression, and we are lucky to hear his music.Like Michael Brecker....

  • @lilnetty2 Now when you say Michael Brecker, you are talking about a musician. He plays with emotion, purpose, and style. He also makes his instrument sound palatable to his audience. He also played more than randon half notes...Michael or Randy Brecker for that matter, is more my language. I would go as far as to say that Eric Johnson shares that innovative, but still relevant, coherent, style.

  • @vmi3301 Well, as I said, you have no ears, nor a brain, now I know. I think all others here agree. Get over it, and go back to Scofield, Benson or Santana. You are not ready for music from the year 3024. Because that's what it is. Holdsworth is clearly the greatest virtuoso out there in things electric guitar. Good luck, L.

  • @Listendudeok Since when is playing half notes sounding like an 8th grader on a keyboard in a basement virtuoso? If what you say is true, I am VERY glad I won't be alive in 3024 to sufffer through what music has become! Typical insults coming from someone that cannot form a musical argument for why this guy deserves any praise at all. It's called being a fanboy. Personal insults only highlight your inability to form a compelling argument for why anyone should value his playing.

  • @vmi3301 You are a stupid idiot. Is that enough in things insults? Because you behave like one. What's the point in you coming here bashing one of the greatest musicians walking the earth? Tell me what's your point, you goddamn weirdo. Still, I think you got no brains, no attitude, no ears. If you don't get it, if you don't understand Coltrane, go back to your country music or what the heck ever you listen to. AH needs no justification, casting pearls before swines... get lost dude.

  • @vmi3301 you are retarded santana is no where close to his level....sorry for kalling you retarded though LOL

  • @juturna Santana has twice his talent. Not only does he have better sound, he can play better rhythms with actual purpose, not just bad synthesized elevator music. Santana can also play many more styles accurately. All this guy does is Yanni on guitar. OVERRATED.

  • @vmi3301 Who cares who you grew up listening to, as if this is a valid reason do discredit an innovator of guitar. The way Allan views chords is interesting and sounds cool too rather than putting the intervals of the chord so close together all the time. I don't expect everyone to like his style of playing, but you seem so bent out of shape. You said "boaring version" I think you meant boring, but I understand you lack an education.

  • @DiatonicSoul how on earth is he an innovator of guitar? He is an innovator of a synthesizer sound on a guitar...why not just play a synthesizer??? My only point is I fail to see why playing half notes on a guitar sounding like a keyboard is worthy of so much praise and adulation...

  • It irritates me that Holdsworth says he doesn't even like the guitar. For the millions of budding players out there trying to sound just a fraction as good as him, this is a slap in the face... And I can't understand his dismissal of the 'percussive' nature of the guitar. To me, this is one of the instruments best features. He seems a tad arrogant.

  • @steveHoweisno1 If he doesn't like the guitar, then he doesn't like it. No need to get all sensitive about it.

  • @steveHoweisno1 "Arrogant"? Only your statement here is arrogant. Holdsworth is not only the greatest virtuoso on electric guitar out there - he's also unbelievably modest, humble, and even depressive about himself. You better listen to the grandmaster, instead of judging him. Holdsworth has the right to teach us, even if it doesn't suit your little head, pardon me. He's a real artist, and a real great musician. It is maybe his modesty that drives him forward on exploration.

  • But can he play Lil Wayne's solo

  • George Lynch is a child compared to Holdsworth- Allan has a massive armory of chordal and melodic structures to draw from - Lynch plays metal .End of story.

  • @dobroplayer2011

As good as Holdsworth is, he's becoming a very, and poorly, copied player by metal-centric and cheesy fusion players. It borders on missapropriation.

  • @dobroplayer2011 End of story. Lynch runs circles around this fraud. This tool plays terrible synthesized Yanni music and people worship him...OVERRATED. Lynch can acutally play rhythms and melodies that go somewhere. Holdsworth is a poor attempt at elevator music at best.

  • He has to know his theory to have such controlled dissonance. Also I've seen videos of him going over 1000000 chord voicings so I know he knows his stuff

  • I read a Joe Satriani interview where he said this is the song that scared him most.

  • i would love to forget all music theory I know and play like this, it seems his understanding of music evolutionized over the the standards

  • He has the weirdest sense of melody and phrasing...

    And I can't friggin' stop listening... o.O

  • indeed

  • As well as the music itself, I like the way he plays the instrument. His left fingers move so elegantly and his right hand seems almost still. It also is an art.

  • Anytime I need the hair to stand up on the back of my neck, I play this little clip. It's just amazing the 136th time as the first ..

  • allan holdsworth doesnt know his music theory little fact for you there given to me by george lynch

  • @god11giggs11 Not at all true. Allan knows his music theory quite well, but his understanding of it is a bit different than what is standard. It would be impossible for someone without a sound understanding of theory to play like this.

  • @Kuzalias Bullcrap. I know guys who play like this with no understanding of theory. They can't improvise worth a crap, and they have to work everything out ahead of time, but it's certainly possible.

  • @MrGuitarWhisperer You seem to have contradicted yourself.

  • @Kuzalias Bullcrap.

  • @MrGuitarWhisperer lol what the hell is your point dude

  • @ElvisBluntman777 I just call it like it is bro.

  • @god11giggs11 What a bunch of BS. Watch some of Allan's instructional videos on YouTube. He knows his music theory inside and out. ;-) He does have his own method of writing chords that only makes sense to him, but he also knows the standard way to write out the chords.

  • Of course he knows theory. He's smart enough not to be a slave to it.

George Lynch couldn't shine Allan's guitar.

  • @god11giggs11 hahaha, george lynch is a "has been" and never could play anything remotely close to jazz and you're going to take his word for it? Only person who doesnt know his theory is him.

  • what's amazing is that he can maintain a consistent melody line with a flurry of fast notes, not slow down, but still keeping a musical concept in line with it. It's astounding.

  • @MapleLeafAce ha haaaaa hey it's ALLAN HOLDSWORTH!

  • I'm tired of hearing that Kurt Rosenwinkel is the new guitar god. He could maybe be AH's guitar tech!!

  • @StodernReturns That's a great line. Can I borrow it?? :)

  • And this is just the most kick ass band on the planet!! I make my music students watch this. They sit in disbelief. As I do...lol

  • AH will always be the guitar god! We all need to bow before him. :) This just makes me smile...

  • @Kuzalias Lil Wayne would just call him "Al".. with one L

  • Lil Wayne would blaze on Alan's guitar playing and probably give Alan a free lesson.

  • @JoUtan01 Allan's name has two L's.

  • @Kuzalias That's the problem you have with it? Lolz. I love you for not feeding the troll.

  • @JoUtan01 0/10

  • @00Dakka Agreed.

  • @JoUtan01 How would a rapper who makes his living sampling other people's work be more skilled at the guitar than a guy who possesses extensive knowledge of music theory and has been demonstrating that knowledge for over 40 years? Just curious. No really, I am curious because I don't listen to any kind of rap, which limits my knowledge of Lil Wayne's life to pretty much nothing.

  • @uofm97 ..Dude I just trolling, Agree with you Alan's awesome and much respected player.Cant say much the same about Lil Wayne guitar playing but he does some balls to play like crap in public!.

  • @JoUtan01 Ha, okay. Got it. Yeah, I found some videos showcasing Lil Wayne's "skills" and I wound up laughing my ass off. Beating off on 1 string is a solo to the guy, I guess.

  • @JoUtan01 Lil Wayne is a piece of shit and his guitar playing is a fucking joke.

  • still one of my favorite guitarist of al time....what a sound, concept.....

i would love to play for him....just a thought.....

  • Top shelf all the way. It really does not get better than this.

  • Holdsworth is so good - you have to be a great player to appreciate how much better he is.

  • @CusterFlux Likely true.

  • @CusterFlux i can't play guitar what-so-ever. all of my musical abilities went into recognition. of good music.

  • ele improvisa tudo isso ??

  • any one knows what scales he uses?

  • @Dangerman909 You should look for "Just for the curious", as close as an Allan Holdsworth "method" as anything will ever be. There he explains his approach to scales and harmony.

  • Needs more cowbell

  • im surprised he doesnt use jumbo frets, i have huge hands like his and i find it hard to play guitars with regular sized frets and that makes me like his playing even more because of his precision

  • @Travybakersk8er

His technique is laser tight, my friend. Very impressive to watch.

I don't like this type of music, i am mesmerised by his technical playing.

  • @Travybakersk8er dude, that guitars scale length is about 2 inches lol his hands are big his geetar is teeny

  • you are LEYENDA !

  • 神やねw

  • All the Alan holdsworth vids should have millions of views. Not the Zakk wyldes and Michael Angelos. Spread this stuff around.

  • @cobias

    It's too "jazzy"

  • imo AH has never had a decent keys player..the only one who had real chemistry with him was dave stewart from bruford.

  • Legato GOD

  • 00:44 + is freaking mental hah

  • Blues for Tony has better variant of Red Alert

  • i scrolled down planning to leave a comment saying that misha mansoor sent me here. only to find out that i would instead be leaving a thumbs up for hairyballs

  • what band is this..is alan on keys novak on drums...? thank you

  • @TheTayedrums Allan Holdsworth band. Yes Alan Pasqua on keys, Chad Wackerman on drums and Jimmy Haslip on bass.

  • @TheTayedrums the group with capenter and novak on drums fucking destroys this group, nothing against chad but i dont really think he gets allans music and jimmy should stick to what he does best with the yellowjackets, their both great players, but their just a bit too conventional for allans music i think

  • @paisteguy799 YEAH I AM NOT ONE TO ARGUE NUCH ABOUT THINS I KNOW AND FEEL (SMILE) and yes novak was a better match for holdsworths style..more raw but musical but firm at the same time..my buddy who is an excellent drummer..feels the same and always has felt closer to novak with holdsworth...For me i just loved Tony;s playing which is party why holdsworth is' kinda' holdsworth--if you see my thought(smile)..i think chad would be next ,Husband-then Caliuta ( who sounds too fucking technical)THX

  • I don't hear it. I don't hear what's so amazing with this guy, doesn't sound any better than Guthrie to me.

  • @MetallSonata if you seriously think of guthrie govan when you listen to this guy, you miss the point of music.

  • @BrianGuitarShred You are right about this. They are different, I just mentioned Govan because I discovered Holdsworth because of him. And here I see people arguing whether who is better, AND I've seen people say Holdsworth was the best around so I think there must be something about him that I can't grasp

  • @MetallSonata Holdsworth has 13 studio albums of jazz music with fusion overtones. Guthrie has an instrumental rock/fusion abum, and a jazz quartet album with his jazz outlet The Fellowship. There approaches are entirely different...Govan is much more traditional then Holdsworth, which impresses people by itself, and Holdsworth has been on the scene four times as long as Guthrie. I love both of them equally, but it's pretty obvious to understand how someone can have favoritism.

  • @MetallSonata

It's good that you're not thinking compositionally on these matters. I mean, notes are just notes after all and seeing that Guthrie hasn't altered the course of music, what's the difference between him and Allan right? I mean, what's the difference between Malmsteen and The Beatles? Obviousle the former is faster therefore better.

That pretty much sums up your relativism.

  • @Samsgarden

    =D

I can sense sarcasm in that, and it's probably my fault for not phrasing my statement correctly. Take Jazz as an example. I used to be into heavy metal, and didn't care much for Jazz. I couldn't see why people could possibly like jazz as much as metal, and now I do. Jazz breaks all the conventional rules set by classical music and therefore makes jazz music fascinating. In the present case, Holdsworth is Jazz, and I know there is something to be realized about his playing

  • @MetallSonata

To be honest, I can see Govan's appeal but he doesn't have the compositional maturity of Holdsworth. At the end of the day, it isn't about how many notes per second someone can play, or how well one can emulate a style, it's about their own voice and staying true to their mission. I think there's too much emphasis on technique alone. Technique is a vehicle, not a means to an end.

  • the perfect tone

  • he's really big or is his guitar is really small?

  • Dear Allan: We absolutely love your playing, your soul, and your talent is beyond measure...but...can you get a guitar that doesn't look like it's a refugee from "Guitar Hero"...?

  • 7 people burned their guitars after hearing this.

  • Is it me or is his guitar smaller than average or his hands are huge?

  • Wow i have seen this clip maybe 200 times! Allan solo here is burned into my brain like the solo's in his cd's. Its just like an Album solo! I wish he would release this on cd!

Your right there is no comparison between these two Masters, both are unique and amazing!

  • Comment removed

  • I read on this and someone said that Guthrie Govan`s playing has surpassed holdsworth`s....is that a joke? I like so much Guthrie`s playing and music...but Cmon Holdsworth is the King

  • @zappfripp87 Difficult to quantify. Questions would include what area has he been surpassed, and how that relates to each players goals or ideals of playing. I have yet to be nearly as impressed by another guitarist. However, it may be possible that Govan holds such technical ability, but the only people qualified to make such a comparison are other guitarists of a similar caliber, and traditionally they have been hesitant to entertain comparisons.

  • @Kuzalias You´re right men....and Im not a pro guitar player just that statement was so "fool" for me.And of course Govan is a super guitar player...but well Ive listened at least all Holdsworth´s collaboration with Gong, Soft Machine, Bruford, Derek Sherinian, Gambale, Colaiuta, with the Johansson brothers...T Williams etc etc...so i admire his ventures with the music....just a personal opinion :)

  • @Kuzalias No guitarist can "really" surpass another, technically yes of course! however guitar playin uses technique only to express an individuals character,Govan and Holdsworth are two distinct characters and so their approach is different! Look at the music its all good,so I'm happy. Now for some more Holdsworth!

  • @Kuzalias I think once you get to this level of playing it doesn't matter. Allan is better at being Allan, Guthrie is better at being Guthrie.

  • @Kuzalias Well said...

  • @zappfripp87

The very question of surpassing is idiotic. Holdsworth is Holdsworth, Guthrie is Guthrie.

Some players are really versatile, like I suspect Guthrie is. Holdsworth has a single-minded devotion & is uncompetitive & unique. I can't say I've listened to much Guthrie but I like Holdsworth because he's interesting and doesn't really fit into any prescribed scene. I think for him, it's not even about the guitar.

The attributes used for comparisons are usually trite & commonplace.

  • @zappfripp87

    God I hate pissing contests.

  • Whenever I think of aliens Allan's solos come to mind.

  • The Great Allan Holdsworth!!

  • woah, you can really hear holdsworth's influence on misha from periphery

  • @rhysrox15

Oh dear. Holdsworth has an influence on some insipid hybrid metal bands? That sounds totally incongruous to me.

    I feel dirty.

  • @Samsgarden i dont know what you're saying.... but whether you like periphery or not you can hear the influence

  • @Samsgarden Allan is one of misha's biggest influence, try listening to his solos

  • @Samsgarden Please no musical snobbery here- even in jest. It's a disease that needs to be stamped out.

  • @Kuzalias

    yeah, sorry, I concede.

  • fuck

  • @StodernReturns

    I'll give you a 7 ;-)

  • Bulb said to listen to Allan Holdsworth so I am.

  • You can sure see the that Lane was heavily inpired by this

  • Wow, I just came out of this clip and realized I had slobbered on my shirt.

  • this guys like the miles davis of guitar!

  • 0:45 i think my brain exploded

  • misha mansoor sent me here

  • @hairyballsagna420 Same! Misha got me listening to and now playing jazz

  • @hairyballsagna420 but why?!

  • yes holdsworth is a free-five thinker/player.. instant sense of the open, the plateau(x) from which all directions offer a level path

  • the one thing about fusion and progressive soloist that i still struggle with, is how they can play a scale and NOT play a scale at the same time. like there are so many "passing tones" in there, it wouldn't even sound like music if someone else tried to play it. great stuff just the same.

  • I remember reading an interview somewhere long ago with Alan Holdsworth, and I could swear he said he hated "pull offs"! I thought, "that's absurd- he does them all the time!", but in the last six months, I've tried just "lifting" my fingers off- (mind you, you might need fairly low action), and I can do similiar stuff much easier! I can't play like Alan, but I think he is doing "lift offs" (I'll call them), rather than "pull offs".

  • 6 people obviously have no clue about music, or have ever been to yoshi's

  • 100k views! Awesome.

  • @Kuzalias amazing... great allan

  • A.H. is in a class all by himself....amazing!

  • Amazing ! The thing about music is extraordinary : i've known him because Malmsteen and Petrucci always talk about him during interviews ( and because of UK of course ) .

  • Dang... I love his guitar. Playing is superb.

  • one of the best ever !!

  • the dvd still costs 35$ which is way overpriced, shame really... id buy it for 15 or so... also you cant find it anywhere on the intarwebs.

i listened to a few of his albums but didnt like the songs so much, i much prefer his live songs where he improvises all the time. are there similar dvds or good quality recordings out there?

  • what guitar is that? its not a steinberger right?

  • Comment removed

  • @jose044: Right. It isn't a Steinberger. These guitars are custom built by Bill Delap.

  • 0:47-0:55...i just had goosebumps

  • Holdsworth!

  • such control

  • i hate this shit........ but fuck theyre good.

  • jazz fusion - when you know all the players will be better than you ever will be

  • that is awesome!
