@straightarrow372 Uh' the equipment in 1940 could capture every nuance of music. The condenser microphones of the 1950's are the most prized audio recording mics ever made and are sought by the best recording studios today. The Western Electric amplifiers of the 1930's are the most pure form of amplification known. And to end my point. In 1981 when this was made, it was recorded with state of the art equipment. The bad sound you hear is from poor reproduction from the watchers own recording.
i was going to comment that this performance was "priceless" but that statement is not true because Ms. Price was there singing. So the performance was not "priceless" but Ms. Price I S PRICELESS AND FABULOUS> LOVED THISPERFORMANCE!!!!!!!!!!*****rated highest 11+ orchestral arrangement Great!!!! ROGHARM
the only thing I didn't like about the performance was that I wasn't there to hear the resonance in that auditorium when she hit those absolutely glorious notes!
what can one say about this performance other than it is the perfect combination of an incomparable voice joined with an insight to lyrics that few if any will
ever come close to ...the beauty of tone and the heartfelt intensity are unique as only lee can do!!!
@ockman416 what the hell do you mean , an insight to lyrics? She is singing this just like any other rendition, albeit with that wonderful, wonderful voice of hers!
@timsuffolk She is singing faster than the music. The conductor sets the pace and everyone follows, including the soloist, who is just another musician.
@Onegin65 That's partially true. He conducts the players, but his job is to follow the soloist. Why do you think she's out in front? Can you imagine how horrible it would be if the conductor didn't take the right tempo that suited the soloist? That could be a disaster, especially for singers, because if the tempo doesn't suit the voice, it could all fall apart. If this wasn't true, how would you explain when singers hold extra long notes and take liberty with rhythms? The conductor must follow.
Wow, she knocks your socks off!

Oh, if only this had been recorded with modern equipment! I feel like I'm missing so much. Thanks for posting, though.

Too bad the audio quality is so poor; this might be the best performance of Climb Every Mountain ever sung. Her voice is perfect for it.

I love both this and Kiri's version for different reasons. I won't tell you which one is better, as I don't know the answer myself.

Le son est médiocre; désolé! Mais j'aime beaucoup la voix de Léontyne Price.

She's rushing the music. It's up to the conductor set the tempo.

Not true; the conductor's job is to follow the soloist, which he does.
