Beyond belief. Such wonderful rhythm and sense of style. Sometimes, for all his perfection, he leaves me a little cold, but here Michelangeli's just perfect.
If I heard this without knowing, I would have thought there was a guitar and piano duet!! Incredible in all aspects of sound control. And beautiful interpretation. Perfect as all of ABM's playing was always.
Ya'll are missing the magic here, distracted by your animosity and arguments with one another Shut up and listen. This is magnificent, wonderful piano playing that inspires me, indeed, takes my breath away from its subtle beauties.
This is absolutely wonderful but it certainly isn't Malaguena. It is called "Rumores de la Caleta" from Recuerdos de Viaje op.71. It is well know to every guitarist as it translates very well for the instrument, as many of Albeniz's piano pieces do.
I'll try again: in my previous comment I stated that prefer this marvelous performance to that of Cortot's; I find it more seductive and Spanish in feeling. Michelangeli is one of a handful of the greatest pianists of all time. I also like Rosenthal, Lipatti, Kapell, Cliburn, Rachmaninoff, Richter, Moiseiwitsch, Gieseking, Schnabel, Sofronitsky, and Horowitz.
I don't even know why I bother to reply to such a self righteous, judgemental statement, but I do so for the edification of others who may read your ridiculous comment: I listed my favorite pianists who came to mind at the moment; OF COURSE Hoffman and Lhevinne were fabulous pianists, as were Sofronitsky, de Larrocha, Pogorelich, Backhaus, Cortot, Casadesus, Gould, Hess, Haskil, etc. etc. DID I LEAVE ANYONE OF YOUR FAVORITES OUT HERE? You obviously need professional help.
billyguns2-Now,now-you are truly ill. Just because I comment my views on your pseudo intellectual idiotic assertions does not give you libel to get aggressive and show your true colours to all and sundry. Better that you first consider the sad hilarity of what you write.
P.S.-You left out many of my favourites, once again better than some of the above. Are you now humbled by your own words and ridiculous omissions of two of the very greatest.of all time Hofmann and Lhevinne.
Your comments are beneath contempt, and I will never be "humbled" by the likes of you, a true spawn of Satan. I grow tired of this idiotic discourse with the likes of you; I will see if I can block receiving your comments in future.
Is it my imagination, or is the piano out of tune?

May be the best way is to put the two names next to each other because it is very confusing : Malaguena and Rumores...

I agree about the relative merits of Cortot and Michelangeli. The latter was a real giant.
grubsnigr 3 years ago
grubnigr-Cortot was a giant as well, but not quite as tall. For that matter, very few in history were.

billyguns2-To see Cliburn selected to the exclusion of Hofmann and Lhevinne among others -goes beyond a matter of taste. It is preposterous.
