there are many different ways to teach any trick. It all depends on the horse and person. You always have to be careful when teaching this trick, not only for the obvious reasons, but also your horse might start bowing when its not wanted. Ex. When your farrier goes to give them a trim or you need to pick up your horse's feet. Its always best to "transfer" to another cue ASAP.
actually the better way is to just use a treat and put it betwen the legs my horse learnt it in like 4 days now she does it when i take a treat in the stable so she is chooosing if she wants to do it not being forced by a peice of rope!!!!
In response to your recent request about wanting me to post a YouTube video, I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I do have one on my Facebook page. Showing a quick clip of two horses bowing, sitting, Spanish Walk, and more.
I think ur doing a beautiful job, and barring a nuclear explosion, everything looks very safe between "YOU and YOUR HORSE". I've recently begun clicker training (for cherrybomb) and love the results. Amazing how things go when we pay them for the work they do. And they are so grateful for the small pittance of a carrot.
Your method is not silly. It works. My own horse is coming along with this trick after about ten minutes using your technique. Not knowing how my horse was going to react to the rope around the leg (and teaching him in a large pasture where he would be in danger if he got away from me), I hooked the rope around his leg instead of tying it, so it wasn't attached to him at all should he run off. Thanks! Fun!!!
YES, I have trained hundreds of trick horses. Your method is dangerous and silly.I use a leg rope in the very beginner for a very good reason, (and the benefits are many and not enough room to explain here) but it is quickly dispensed with as the horse learns to bow from whip cue alone. I trained a horse last week to bow, Spanish Walk, sit, rear, and stand on a box in 2 days. The reason I train like I do, is many fold and it will help and make all further training faster and easier.
Yes, you could learn to ride using the Parelli system. They market their videos as a home study course and lots of people have learned tons from the Parelli's. All that being said, I personally believe that having a riding instructor and a trained lesson horse to learn on/with are invaluable. This is of course, if it is the "right" instructor and the "right" horse. You will learn to ride much faster and safer with the right team. I view the Parelli information as a wonderful addition.
I have been learning from Parelli for a while and I know that it's supposed to be NATURAL horsemanship which doesn't mean ropes tied around their feet.
it CLEARLY states in the description that this lady uses parelli, and therefore both horse and human trust each other.
I use horsemanship (parelli, clinton anderson, ray hunt etc) , and its MUCH better than 'traditional' teaching. Ive been trying to find instructions on teaching one of my ponies to bow (he rears and stands on a pedestal already, we're wanting to work on bowing and laying down)
Lovely horse, and brilliant techniques in this vid!
You can read and see them in my book. Safety first to handler and horse. It's not safe to promote squating under a kneeling horse, esp. in the early training process and definatly not under one which is loose. If you made this video to help teach owners how to teach their own horse to bow, then those things should be stressed. Nix the music and add text.
Yes, your horse is already trained. However, since your posted a video about teaching horses to bow, you assume there will be people wanting to try to teach their own horse to bow. For them, they need a lead rope for safety. Squating down beside your horse to "bribe" him with a treat , while holding up his leg, also puts you in a dangerous place should your horse lose his balance, There are better and safer ways to teach the bow.
You should not be teaching a horse to bow with leg ropes without also having a lead rope on the horse. Should he panic he will be dragging a leg rope, Stepping on it with a hind leg, it could easily result in a fall. You should be training your horse to bow on softer ground. Grass is not soft enough, plus it encourages the horse to eat grass when he bows, which is not something you want to instill in your future trick horse.
Thanks so much for your advice. And do not worry, the rope was not attached to his leg in anyway, mearly looped. Willie no longer needs any ropes to guide his bow anyway. He loves his tricks and happily performs them anytime he has a chance. Thanks again
I don't understand treats and ropes. I train horses to do things when they learn to want to do for you, not for a treat. I'm still in the process of finding a training video without treats or ropes to train a horse to lay down. It is possible because I've read it in a magazine. My 4 year old red dun AQHA I can ride bareback and bridleless, so I think he's ready to learn this.
So you just get a soft rope and tie it around your horse's hoof, and while your doing that, you give your horse a treat so he bends his head? AM i right, because I really want to teach my mare to bow!
tht was gr8 n i knw it looks harsh wi the rope n could pos b dangerous but he is urs n i knw u can train them without it but its ur choice n u might just find tht some horses wont do it without a rope. i really wanna try some of this stuff out but i cnt cos i dont ave a horse/pony n i knw i could defo not do it with the rda ponies where i help oot:)
I know that horses can be trained without ropes, but that is a matter of preference and convenience. In all honesty (and I do hate to be vulgar), if this horse was as irritated as some are saying, he wouldn't be dropping. Keep up the good work! This horse is BEAUTIFUL! He obviously likes you and your bag of carrots :D
It took me weeks to figure out how to do this and i used a rope my horse wasn't lame or hurt in any way....you have a great horse...for him to stand there for u like that.
I wish the people who didn't know anything about horses would keep their noses out of horse cruelty...Don't publicly bash some one especially if they did as good of a job as her!
i really dont understand why your using a rope when i taught my horse how to bow i never used a rope. i now diffrent people do diffrent things but you do now your really getting on his nerves and please your but is way to big to be on camera so get it out the way!!
she's not getting on his nerves. If she did he wouldn't be halfway extended (his manhood) and the only reason he's throwing a small fit is because he's trying to get the treat.Look closely before you start throwing insults at people.
There isn't anything wrong with using the rope. It isn't as if she is hurting him with it. Some horses need it at first. Great job. I'm going to teach my little mare how to bow.
I am not going to bash your ways of teaching your horse, but I will be putting up a video on my account of how to teach your horse this trick and others with only simple cue's and a friendship.
I do not agree with these techniques, in any way, shape or form. You do not need to use a rope anywhere on a horse in order to teach the animal to bow. I have a 14 year old APHA paint as smart as a whip. Today I looked up how to teach a horse the basics on bowing and right after went outside brought my mare out and taught her to bow using a simple bowl of treats and strech technique. Within the following 45 minutes she had learned how to kneel on the ground and bow in a comfortable way. ->
notice how the horse isn't wearing a halter. if he/she foung it uncomfortable or in any way scary he/she would not do it. I'm going to try to teach my mare how to bow and i'm not planning on using a rope since she's really smart but i do not disagree of a rope being used in this manner when necessary.

First you must take your time and make sure your horse is comfortable with you touching her everywhere. Then make sure she is okay with you holding her leg up. You can then teach your horse to pick her leg on cue or use a rope to hold the leg up. After you get that, then stretch for a treat. So, overall the process is about building trust with your horse and taking your time. And if your horse is a more nervous type it could just take longer. Hope that helps and thanks for the nice comments....
