  • I'm doing a research essay on wayang wong and this was extremely useful (: May I know who the performers are (the name of the dance company), the year this was produced, and the country of production? Thank you so much!

  • Is this twixtored?

  • This is the first time I see a video of the Ramayana outside Bali and in Java. Of course, it has the gorgeous sounds of the Javanese gamelan...so magical.

  • As an Indian I've seen several recitals of the Ramayana, on TV and live, several plays and soap operas that narrate this epic of timeless beauty. But none of them have such elegance and surreal serenity.

I HAVE to visit Indonesia some day! No matter what!

  • The most beautiful traditional art I ever seen, dance and music are fantastique!

  • Wonderful, I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to enjoy this exquisite dance. Great thanks for the upload.

  • Indonesian?

  • @Sinsupa110 Yes, Java is in Indonesia. It is Javanese Ramayana.

  • oooo i lvvv this ^////^^ so happyyy <3

  • Ramayana ballet is one of the cultureal achievement of javanese people from hindu era..

FYI, some says balinense were javanese descent. The javanese hindu who fled from war between javanese moslem with javanese hindu settle in bali and mix with local people. therefore their culture are quite similiar.

  • @edhaje You are right. The present day Balinese culture, is what Javanese culture used to be.

  • natana chokkad se.

  • very beautiful and intricate dance from the ramayana. the dancer's movements are precise and exact

  • apik

  • interesting ^_^

  • @Fenrir63 HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH

  • why do people discuss about islam? are european artists performed so many greco roman themed opera, ballet, paintings are idol worshiper? acd muslimiation of java is more late thing the christianization of europe. their hindu heritage more authentic and real than european's greco-roman tradition.

  • Its really amazing ... beautiful

  • Captivating performance! What kind of tree is that in the background at 5:01? It looks like something out of Dr. Seuss.

  • it's rather depressing to read such a stupid comment...

  • is the music rejuvenating for you? Depressing music doesn't necessarily mean 'bad music'. The situation being depicted requires depressing music and the music was very apt to the situation!

  • AWESOME! Balinese version of Ramayana! ^O^ BEAUTIFUL!!!!

  • err. its a javanese version of ramayana. not balinese..

  • Thank you for the correction. The movements do somewhat look alike thus I thought it to be Balinese. :-D

  • Balinese??? it's javanese

  • ya your like.... major late for corrections. lol.

  • hei... balinese??? hello it's javanese mam... Javanese and balinese are distinct ethinic group

  • @NikkiSavella javanese music and balinese music is different :)

  • beautiful dancing

  • i like so much....di tambah lg dunk....makaseh bgt....

  • Is the rest of the dance posted somewhere here on Youtube? It's very beautiful and a lovely story.

  • So you are Muslim too? You can speak for Islam? I know the culture and Islam well. If what you said is true, you would not be watching this video. Wayang Kulit has been adapted overall though, yes. You will see Muslims perform the Hindu epics in Java and all around Indonesia. You obviously do not understand but seem to be against Islam. Why not cry about the "loss" of animism too? All cultures evolve or change. Indonesia has preserved a lot of its culture. What about your own?

  • Abrahamic religions are at best, destructive in nature and condone to nothing but conflict over superficial issues. So as you can see, I am most likely against the practice of Islam, but moreover the practice of useless religions like Christianity, Judaism, and Islam; whereas religions like Buddhism explore the transient nature of life instead of trying to change life. Islam in Indonesia is comparable to Catholicism in the Philippines; ultimately, both should not exist in these areas.

  • As always, it is people like yourself that promote the intolerance. Uneducated ideas about religions you do not even understand. You think destruction and bloodshed never happened in the name of Buddhism? Please! At least educate yourself a bit more and keep your hatred to yourself.

  • actually to date, there have been no record of any wars started/proliferated in the name of Buddhism... but with Islam how many can we count? hmmmmm... what about Christianity? Judaism? I can even quite coherently recall the destruction of ancient Buddhist statues in Afghanistan... all in the name of Islam, right?

  • When someone says that theyre doing something in the name of Islam, does that indefinitely mean that hes telling the truth? When the West colonized many countries in the name of spreading Christianity and introducing civilization, does it mean that that is really their main purpose? When the US attacks Middle Easter countries in the name of spreading democracy and freedom, do you actually believe it? Sorry to break it up to you, but sometimes people have agendas that they politicize

  • for personal gain, because if they tell the truth, they wont get support!! This is politics!! Second thing you should know is that many times philosophies, culture and religions are used and abused. They can be greatly stretched to confirm to the will of those who are in charge even with reasons that are conflicting. For example, in the past, colonization was accepted in order to introduce civilization into the colonized regions

  • (by way of introducing the idea of wearing clothing to the naked native population), today neo-colonization is somewhat accepted in order to introduce freedom into the Middle East (so that Middle Eastern women do not have to be ashamed revealing their body). Here we see culture being used and abused as a reason for colonizing, the only way it wouldnt be abused is by having the same culture as the Western culture (everyone must be dressed like Westerners).

  • Even then, religion and philosophy can be used instead. But are those really what those people who have agendas are really concerned about?? NO! Third, there are always some bad apples in every community. I had a Buddhist monk who taught world religions who said that some Buddhist monks in the past even took arms and attacked to explain that there are even bad apples in the Buddhist community.

  • Similarly, some environmentalists have probably falsified documents and data so that the public become more concerned about the environment, but not all environmentalists do this. So please do not bring up poor countries like Afghanistan, to show how Islam is. The country has a shaky background since half of the population was under 14 when it was invaded and destroyed by Russia. This youth grew up to be adults without proper education and guidance from the elderly.

  • And why do you neglect to mention that Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates condemned the act as savage? Fourth, culture, philosophy and religion are not synonymous to the people who follow them. I mentioned many examples of evil Muslims, Christians, Westerners, Buddhists and environmentalists, but it doesnt mean that Islam, Christianity, Western culture, democracy, Buddhism, environmentalism are all bad!

  • Fifth, do not mix hatred with ignorance! This is a really dangerous mix. Sixth, you can be rest assure that Im arguing against your statements purely to defend my country, my religion, my people and my Javanese brethren, unlike the bad examples I mentioned earlier.

  • As I have said before, Islam is an EXTREMELY dangerous religion... Jews have had it bad throughout their 3300 year history... they have been blamed for the plague, exterminated by the millions, ousted from their countries, nearly eradicated... but you don't see a jewish suicide bomber walk into a cafe in germany and blow himself into pieces all in the name of martyrdom and judaism.

  • You dont see a Jew suicide bomber blowing up Germany just as you dont see a Muslim blowing up Mongolia. But didnt the Mongols swept the Middle East in the 13th century sacking Baghdad after having been the center of Islamic power for 500 yrs? Yes, but that was in the past! Critiquevirtuoso, would you be angry and hit back at a person who yelled at you and hit you two years ago? Maybe you would not like him, but youre anger must have died out over the years.

  • Some of them fought back for their people, their religion and their own survival. AND BESIDES the Nazis collapsed and were brought to trials for what they committed!! So try using other analogies, because this one is not comparable Try hitting a Jew in the face or call their mothers whores, trust me, theyll hit you back. Or go visit a synagogue during a mass and scream out You Jews are losers during the holocaust and laugh out loud, they wont escort you out without some punches and shoves.

  • Its important that I should say first that I dont support terrorism such as suicide bombers killing innocent civilians. And that I dont find any base of it in Islam, suicide is a horrendous sin (but dying in the hands of the enemies is acceptable), killing innocent civilians/pedestrians is a also a sin (killing must have a just cause, a soul bears its own sins, cant cross the line),

  • women and children are not to be touched in a state of war (but you will kill some women and children in a random terrorist attack), attack are done in a state of war (but there the Islamic world and the West is not in a state of war). In reality those terrorists are going against the teachings of Islam and therefore they shouldnt be associated with it. If theyre really doing it in the name of Islam, then why dont they follow it??

  • IMO those are blinded fools doing things out of anger or following their leaders without understanding the matter. Its also written in the Quran that people must consider their actions carefully so that they wont regret it later and that leaders who hide the truth and tell lies will go to hell with their followers who chose to follow them blindly.

  • When you have a Danish cartoonist making depictions of a prophet which angers all adherents of the religion under question rally at the Danish embassy in London crying for destruction, Danish blood, and Jihad do you not think that these people revolt in the name of Islam and solely in the name of Islam? EVERY religion has been publically criticised... but when someone publically criticises islam, he cannot hope to make it out alive without being blown up to pieces or publically decapitated.

  • Sorry, but I dont think youre using the word criticize correctly. If the Danish cartoonist came up to me and say, I dont think youre religion is correct because blah blah blah or Here are some of my thoughts on the fallacies and deficiencies in your religion. Now thats criticism. And I might even agree with some of the things that he says. But instead he drew the prophet with a bomb in his turban or compare him to a pig or whatever. Those are plain insults!

  • Do you see the huge difference between criticizing and insulting? There are lots of books out there criticizing Islam, just go read a book written by Christian scholars on Islam and youll find thousands of criticism on Islam. Many books criticizing Islam can also be found in Islamic countries. But insulting is a whole different story. Sorry if I'm writing a lot, but the truth is never simple.

  • Now, Buddhists might not do anything against the cartoonist, if he had insulted Buddha instead of the prophet, but dont think that the Buddhists would like it or that they would be friends with him. If you insult Sidarta Gautama (Buddha) as a loser, then its same as youre saying that all Buddhists are losers for following a loser and it wouldnt sound like bells ringing beautifully in their ears. NO ONE LIKES TO BE INSULTED!

  • Almost all Muslims know the story of how the prophet used to be made fun of and insulted by the people who didnt like him. They even threw shit on him. The prophet ignored them and kept on praying. So, theoretically the Islamic way to react towards insults is to ignore them and not to protest back or even assault back like the way these protesters did. However, you shouldnt be surprised that it happened and that some people may let their angers control them.

  • The cartoonist and the officials in his country knew how very important the prophet is to Muslims. So dont be so surprised about it. Example: If one of my children (hopefully in the future I have one) came home saying that he was slapped in the face by a classmate. And I asked him, Why did he hit you? And he replied, because I insulted his mother. Then I would say to him, Good! Maybe that will teach you a lesson not to insult others! And if he didnt slap you hard enough then I will.

  • On the other hand, you critiquevirtuoso with your children on your island in the Philippines can develop a culture of insulting each other if you like in addition to your Hindu-Buddhist culture:p

  • On Freedom of Speech from Wikipedia for critiquevirtuoso: "the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject to limitations, such as on "hate speech""

  • On Hate Speech from Wikipedia for critiquevirtuoso: "Hate speech is a term for speech intended to degrade[citation needed] a person or group of people based on their race, gender, age, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, language ability, ideology, social class, occupation, appearance (height, weight, hair color, etc.), mental capacity, and any other distinction that might be considered by some as a liability." God knows best!

  • Many if not most Muslim and Christian scholars who have studied Buddhism would agree that Buddhism is more of a set of philosophies about life and can be set as a way of life. It doesn't require much of it's followers to believe in certain doctrins. I as a Muslim can accept almost if not all of its teachings, just as I can accept economic theories. It only becomes a religion when it is mixed with local beliefs.

  • it's a pity that almost all Indonesians are Muslim nowadays... such a disappointing abandonment of culture.

  • Islam is a religion, not a culture. It's true that some parts of a culture (which Islam forbids) could disappear such as worshipping multiple dieties, dishes containing pork..., but really not much is lost compared to the 99.5% of culture that is kept intact. (I even ran out examples of culture that is abandoned other than worship & pork consumption) Can you name other things Muslims have abandoned?

Nowadays? The Javanese were almost all Muslims five hundred years ago. It's not a recent thing.

  • Did you assume that Hindu was the original religion there? Pity people make uneducated comments. Have you been to Indonesia? Do you know what the culture actually is? And OMG they play pop music! Shame shame, pity they "lose their culture" from westernization, right? ((rolls eyes)))

  • I'm talking about the hindu-buddhist culures that developed there from the civilisations of Majapahit, srivijaya, etc. that was lost with the coming of Islam. The original religion there was of course animisism. Islam denotes the use of human forms in art so as you can see... many of the bas-relief and scenes from Hindu mythology have been abandoned. Next time, please don't try to act stupid... otherwise, I wouldn't have had to explain at great length what everyone else already understands.

  • Who are you?? You come here and you whine and complain about our culture?? Go back to the Philippines! And since you don't like the religion there, go buy yourself an island as the country has lots of them! Go have lots of children and develop your own Hindu-Buddhist culture. Aren't the Javanese free to do what they want?? If the majority of Javanese decided to suddenly adopt American culture, then it's up to them. It's not your place to whine and complain.

  • as you've noticed, we're still practicing and producing a lot of cultures which have been influenced during our Hindu-Buddhist period. In fact, one of the most efflorescent period of Javanese culture was during the 19th century, when Islam was well underway as Java's main religion. If you don't know our culture, I suggest just shut up.

  • very nice! I love the music it is so peaceful!

  • apik tenan

  • Love the graceful dance and the music!

  • HOw beatifull, the Indonesian in surinam

kept their religion till now.the same as you show. Donot let the illmannerd people take it away from you.

  • So, is Shinta the Indonesian approximation of "Sita"?

  • I love the delicate movements and the

headpieces (they look as if they are from another galaxy).

  • Yes, can you believe it. People in Java wear it everyday!

  • lol, that's a good one!

  • I love this --thank you, MAYA

  • siapa duluan yg mengikutin?? kendang?? atau yg menari?? siapa dulu yg kasih signal? atau feeling ??

  • yo kendang to mas

  • biasanya kalau tari tarian begini, penarinya yng ngasih signal, kendangnya yang ngikutin. tapi kadang2 bisa juga kendangnya yng ngasih signal buat penarinya.

  • Kalau lagi latihan, pake kaset, penarinya ngikutin irama kendang. Kalau show kendangnya ngikutin penarinya biar lebih live dan pas dengan gerakannya. Thanks, MasOno

  • sita turned into shinta

  • Wow.. really beautiful. Thanks for sharing.. Ahh, i missed Indonesia very much..

  • Cute deer vote!

  • NICE.. LOVE IT.. Bisa upload lagi?

  • thanks for posting. :-) (very beautiful!!!)

  • amazing dance.

  • Amazing! Thanks for upload this beautiful cultural heritage!!

  • The Balinese also have similar traditions.

  • this is nice but why are all the characters' names spelled wrong.. The lady is Sita. the place is Lanka, and the monkey is Hanuman.. This is the epic from India and these names are wrong. WHy?

  • The Javanese pronunciation is actually Sinta for Sita, Alengka for Lanka, and Hanoman/Hanuman for Hanuman. Furthermore, Hanuman is also known as Senggana, Rahwana is Dasamuka (Ten Faces), and Sinta is also known as Manthiliputri (the princess of Manthili). There are many variations on nomenclature, as expected for a story that has been spread over a wide area of the world.

  • Hi laleeta

    Consider these:

'Jesus', pronounced (jee-zuss), this form is the Latin of original Hebrew (pron. Isa). 'Confucius' when it shld b K'ung Fu tzu.

Kolkata/Calcutta, Mecca/Makkah, Cairo/Kahirah, Morocco/Maghribi, Kozhikode/Calicut (Hindi or Anglicised speakers may hv difficulty pronouncg the Malayalee)... ad infinitum

Different languages transliterate names in variant forms. ;)

  • The Ramayana is of Indian origin, but you should respect the fact that because it spread over such as vast area in Southeast Asia entered many different cultures and has been modified by different peoples in many ways, it can't be called just "Indian". It could be called: "Ramakavaca" (Bali) "Ramakien" (Thailand), "Phra Lak Phra Lam" (Laos), "Hikayat Seri Rama" (Malaysia), "Maharadia Lawana"/"Radia Mangandiri"/"Darangen" (Philippines), "Yama Zatdaw" (Myanmar) "Reamker" (Cambodia) etc..

  • In Southeast Asia, Hinduism had a big historical influence on culture, but because they weren't Sanskrit-speakers, they renamed many things into their own native languages. In fact, I believe the Javanese Kakawin Ramayana is one of the versions which is the closest to the original Ramayana epic. Compare Java's "Sinta" to Mindanao's "Putri Gandingan", and you'll realise that the Javanese names aren't so different to the originals...

  • to laleeta

the origin of the ramayana was india but when it was braoght to all over the world, the name and the story going different according to the places. that is the beauty

  • bless you for this,

    vision of Immortal Golden Deer.

    for all our sacred relations,

    Millennium Twain

  • Wow! Simply Beatifull thanx for uploading!
