@spacepatrolman Hey i'm BRITISH !! When Tony wrote this song in the 1960's, maybe '42nd Street' was considered as downtown !! I bet you don't know about the all the streets in the UK, you've got to see it from his point of view too :) xx
@SUSAN19651000 42 nd street was never downtown greenwich village is somebody from out of town wouldnt be expected to know I read the london times once I didnt know who those people or places were
Check out a video titled Jerry Lewis Show 58. There you will see Gary at age 13 along with father Jerry and grandfather Danny Lewis doing versions of the great Al Jolson hit Sonny Boy in a comic version.
blimey!! i thought i was the only one who liked Gary n Co bought the single "count me in" which im gona play in a mo "cant wait"also 2 albums i realy thought he was ok my mates at the time couldnt stand him o well !!you have a very similar taste to me good stuff ,sir B///
Sadly, Gary has been 'forgotten' by too many...I was a buddy of Gary's in the 90's when he/wife lived in Cleveland area..HE is THE nicest guy ever, I miss our talks at the kitchen table..buying him tres chic shirts at Sak's (he LOVES them on stage! lol) and I miss him a lot...I am still best freinds with his fist wife but wish I never lost touch with Gary to this day :( Gary...IF you ever see this, miss ya buddy..my heart aches over Joey, and I hope one day to talk to you again!
Yes Nancy thats our highschool days. I love this group, all the songs are beautiful the music is amazing thanks SirBasilde Brush for posting Gary Lewis and the playboys TYVM
This is my most cherished song by Gary Lewis & the Playboys.......Very nice version. Used to sing this when I was in high school whenever I got broken-hearted.......Ha hahah....those were high school memories that would never be erased from my mind.....ever....
Haa, just been very sad about the guy I´d need to forget, looking for "Forget him" without knownig anything about the results and now I find this song.
interesting group, on one song they sound like beach boys, on another they sound like everly brothers, this one different yet. the chameleons of rock headed by the nerd of rock gary. love the group. love their music
This was the first version of this song that I ever heard that made me fall in love with it. But when I googled it, the original singer came up as Billy Fury (because his version was the most recent I assume). And his version is nothing like this! I was so frustrated and pissed that I couldn't find the "original" until I finally figured out the Rydell sang the original version! That was a freaking relief. Have you heard Fury's version? I love him but it's crap.
NO zaputa this version is not crap - sure bobbys version was the big hit - so what - gary and the boys do it remarkable justice - and with much class - more so than other acts would - this is a great version on their first LP - you dont know crap pal...
I agree with you barilko. Both versions sound good - Bobby's is one I' ve also heard but comparing him and Gary and his band is not the point. Saying this version is crap compared to Bobby's is a little silly I feel. Thanks for posting. - Paula
This version is ok if you've never heard Bobby Rydell's version-- then this version becomes "crap" compared to it. If you've never heard the Bobby Rydell version, and you like this version, you're in for a treat!
I scored this vinyl LP in a garage sale two weeks ago and I listened to it today. When I looked at the photos in the back of the cover and read the notes, I discovered that Gary is Jerry Lewis' son! Boy, did I feel dumb! How could I have missed that? He even looks like him! *slaps forehead*
Thanks for the vids of Gary. Was there ever a vid made of "Sure Gonna Miss Her" with Gary on the drums? I've only heard a partial track with his characteristic beat and would love to hear the full song.
I remember when Gary went into the service. I was all ready in. Great group. I like Billy Fury's version the best. But Bobby Rydell was first if I remember right.
Bobby Rydell had the hit with this (his last one, btw) It's a great song, and Gary does it justice. Gary Lewis and the Playboys were one of THE best pop groups of the '60s. Pop music at its absolute best.
@blisskasden Please listen to 'Billy Fury', he does a really good version of this song. Untill now i thought only Billy Fury sung this song in the 60's, i will be listening to Bobby Rydell's version tho as soon as i post this. Thanks for the info :) xx ( I like this version, but not as much as i love Billy Fury's ).
@SUSAN19651000 Susan, funny how you grow up with a version of a song and it brings back memories... Bobby Rydell's does that for me and now with the wonder of YouTube, I've heard Gary Lewis and the Playboys play/sing it very well and Billy Fury does a smashing job!! Enjoy Billy always singing his version, just for you...
Thanks a bunch for this! I had never heard this version by Gary & the boys before; I still probably prefer Bobby Rydell's, but this is a good take as well.
Love Gary, but this song BELONGS to Bobby Rydell.

It is so rare for a cover to be better than the original, but Gary Lewis pulls it off. I am a big fan of Bobby Rydell but this version smokes him.
