  • The argument between "federation" & "confederacy" is ridiculous. As late as the 1850's you will find writings describing the US as a confederacy.

"The dangers of a concentration of all power in the general government of a CONFEDERACY so vast as ours are too obvious to be disregarded" -- Inaugural Address, US Pres. Franklin Pierce -- 1853

In fact the CSA constitution called THEIR govt federal. "We, the people of the Confederate States... in order to form a permanent FEDERAL government.."

  • What you describe as nationalism is properly a "centralist" form of government. Nationalism is a government that promotes ideas against foreign intervention/influence and for domestic homogeneization- e.g. the myth of the Aryan race in Nazi Germany(NAZI- NATIONAL-socialism). Centralization of power may not be absolute can still be called a centralist government. Hence, centralism is the proper antonym for federalism. A "confederation" is a loose association of separate States. Ph.D. in PolSci.

  • @Sibarit1973 I'm going by how the terms were used at the time.

  • i'm fairly certain that the meaning of federalism changed to mean nationalism... and confederalism (formerly a synonym) was what remained to represent the thought.

  • No a federation is not a covenant or coalition of different groups, because if that were true then NATO would be a federation as it exists as a military coalition.

    Fucking retard.

A confederacy is a coalition of entities that coincide together under a separate yet weak structure of central government like the articles of confederacy.

A federation is a coalition of entities that coincide together under a strong central government which offers some powers reserve to its regions.

  • @TheRadicalRyushin [citation needed]

  • On which part. Nato being a coalition of states? Do I really have to tell you what NATO is?

You are acting like you have zero capacity to know anything on your own. What are you, a moron?

Fine, you want citations, you lazy fat ass, fine.

    NATO - from ia.nato.in - index.php?view=details&id=13%3Anato-ia-symposium&option=com_eventlist&Itemid=233

    Confederacy and Federacy - from jcpa.org - dje/articles/federalist.htm

    And from userpages.umbc.edu - ~nmiller/POLI100/Q&A.htm

  • @TheRadicalRyushin "You are acting like you have zero capacity to know anything on your own. What are you, a moron?"

No, YOU'RE the one resorting to bogus Argument from Authority and refusing to respond to the logic I presented.

  • YOU DON'T HAVE ANY LOGIC, you stupid redneck hillbilly.

  • @TheRadicalRyushin Thanks for showing your true colors. Now no one knows to take you the least bit seriously.

  • Also from fs.huntingdon.edu - jlewis/Outlines/JusticeTheoriesSA.htm

Hopefully that is all the citation you need, if not I'll be glad to offer you more, lazy asshole.

  • @TheRadicalRyushin Why don't you bother reading them yourself?

  • I read them before I submitted them, why haven't you even started to read them?

  • Thanks for clearing up the whole federalism debate. I was confused as to why Alexander Hamiliton was called a federalist when his essays in the Federalist were nationalistic. Now I see they were just playing with names for publicity sake. Love these lectures.

  • Please stop falling for that idiot's words.

Alexander Hamilton was a federalist, not a nationalist. Theodore Roosevelt was are only true nationalist president, because he sought to perfectly secede ourselves from England on the basis of language.

You see a nation is an entity with its own language, culture, region of land, and demography or population. A state is functioning government over a group of people within a specific region.

They are not one in the same and they are not synonyms.

  • Read: "Hamilton's Curse"

  • So far, this is the best Constitution Lecture yet. This one was really clear and concise. Really well done!

  • This is the most mind blowing concept I try to explain to people.

Until I show that the Declaration declared the colonies as "free & INDEPENDENT States". That the word state is a synonym of nation. That the Treaty of Paris, that ended the Rev War, didn't recognize the USA, but recognized and listed each of the 13 states as independent from the UK. Finally, I ask them to find the exact wording in the Const. that formed ONE nation out of those States. More perfect UNION--yes, one nation--no.

  • I was lied to in history class.

  • This is very interesting stuff.

I have come to believe that the US constitution is highly relevant to maintaining freedom here in Europe. Especially the bits about free speech.

  • @Boozyscientist Take a lesson from our American history. Be wary of the EU's push for "federalism" and a European constitution. In time Brussels will steal all of the UK's sovereignty as Washington DC does to our states. And if at some point you try to leave the EU, they may use force to keep you from going peacefully (see our Civil War).

I would hate to see the birthplace of the philosophy of American liberty (Harrington, Sydney, Locke, etc) lose it's independence and freedoms.

  • Excellent series thus far, Shane. Keep up the good work.

  • How do you disable captions?!

  • There should be a CC button in the bar. If it's not there, try the icon in the lower right.

  • So when can we expect the next one? :-)

  • When real life allows.

  • OK.

    I hear ya'.

  • Its all about how big your country is. A country the size of one of your states is best run when people vote in the central government and the local town councils. A strong state system is just a waste of resources.

  • Thanks... well planed, nicely done and easy to understand.

  • Thanks for pointing out the confusion which arises when talking of the "Federalists" and "anti-Federalists." I really thought a Federalist believed in central government over local government, so thanks for clearing that up.

  • A Federalist believes in central government; a federalist doesn't. (Capital F versus lowercase.)

  • There we are. Thanks.

  • Awesome, thanks for that. :)

  • Legalize weed, NOW!

  • @TheD0ded0de we did! where you been?

  • thanks for the reupload.

I have a question about the captions can it be enabled in nay video? and is it possible to edit those? the arabic one could use work.

  • never mind-I just found out the answers to the two questions.

  • I've actually seen an option in some videos for YouTube to automatically generate captions with speech recognition. It doesn't seem to work that well in my experience.

However, the transcript feature is BANG ON. So accurate it's scary. It saves me a lot of time having to make the subtitle file myself.

  • How does that particular transcript feature work? I could use it, since I have two videos with really low audio rebutting a creationist about tooth evo.

  • If you have a text file with a verbatim transcript of the spoken words in your video, you can just upload it and YouTube will automatically work out the timings. It's SCARY. Every time I see it work, I think, "SkyNet"...

  • ah, I see. luckily, I do.

I'll give it a try. thanks for the tips.

  • @shanedk

do not fear technology. it does only what we wish it to. fear those who wish it to do things we don't want it to.

  • It doesn't bother me too much, mostly because I know enough about how speech recognition and speech synthesis work that I can see how they can have lots of trouble with pure speech recognition, but have really good automatic syncing of a transcript. I couldn't develop the system, but I can see what the principle parts are and how they fit together.

  • All I know is, I'd LOVE to have that software on my computer. One of the most tedious parts of making videos is doing the subtitles.

  • Hear hear! These are very informative videos, accessible in their presentation.

  • I'm surprised im finding this so interesting. Great set of videos!

  • Wouldnt nulification and succession also count as state checks against the state alonge with making amendments?

  • Wow, I am just loving these videos. Thanks a lot.

  • Excellent. No matter how hard I try, I cannot disagree.
