@redninja952 unfortunately I had to sell him I moved across country and the people I were with would not have wanted him in their house let alone a humongous cage haha.
Consider the beardie's perspective; he's holding his breath if he's in water and has to swim then he's learning, still figuring out when and how long he has to hold his breath for. Watch his breathing mechanics. Pick him up out of the water, and you might notice that he might still be holding his breath even after being "magically pulled out of the water" (from his perspective), especially if he's scared. It's a big new world for him. That's all. Let him learn, and you'll learn in the process.
mine does it too... every beardy does it... because the stop breathing if their nose is near the water... then they start breathing like "this" if the nose above the water....
Yeah that sounds right. It was prob nothing to worry about but remember to leave him under basking light after bath for two hours or so. I myself have made an important note of this :)
Actually how is he doing now? Are your temps what they should be? When you bathe him make sure you leave him in the tank with basking light on for at least two hours after. It could be a respiratory infection caused with not doing this after bathing?
Please dont EVER use calcium sand. It is extremely bad. If you have to use sand then use play sand which has been filtered and baked in the oven. Myself i would stick to using paper towels or newspaper. And also dont use a red light bulb at night as some people suggest - this is bad, it can affect their sleeping patterns. Use a heat emitter. It sounds like this beardie may be having problems because you have been housing him on calcium sand in the winter. This is why i hate it with passion!
@jessiza1 see, now this is information i was not privy too. Or rather not that i can recall hearing about, i will remove the calcium sand and use some other substrate.
Hi. I was wondering how your bearded dragon is doing now? Did you take him to a vet? I am concerned for my own beardie because she is doing this same thing. Did you ever figure out what was wrong?
hmm i have done some research from some people that are vets and other owners, i have been instructed that this could be him trying to asperate(sp?) some water and that it has simply gone down the wrong tube.
I am Definately keeping a close watch on him though to see if this is behaviour is repeated, so far i have yet to see this again.
you should take him to a reptile vet immediately.
this is usually a sign of various potentially fatal illnesses.
What kind of diet does he get, does he have UVB? what are the temperatures in his tank? what kind of substrate is he using? has he been dropped, fallen or otherwise had any kind of possible injury that you might not see on the surface. reptiles are rather sensitive to injury and illness.
@Bibushka66 yes according to this person's finding in corolation with the company exo terra which i read a post on (I'll post a link to the article in the info bar) this would be true.
How's he doing now?

My beardie did that a few times while basking... Which scared the crap out of me, but I heard it is normal...
I don't know...
help!

mine does the same thing after he gets out of the water!
ayybecca 1 year ago
Please do. Most illnesses when treated quickly heal up rather well. beardies are sensitive creatures but respond well to medical treatment.

he has a winter cage and a spring/summer/fall cage that he is in he has a solar glo lightbulb and his temps are usualy around 102 F
he has fallen before and the main tank is huge and has a tile substrate, but the winter one is calcium sand he is about 5 or 6 years old
Shortstickman 2 years ago
again I suggest a vet visit.
