  • I've never liked The Smiths, but I can listen to Johnny Marr for days on end.

  • one of the best riffs ever..... does he exclusively play Jag now??

  • @STPconditions Let's just say they're very different...

  • the best

  • Magic

  • I remember hearing Smiths for the first time and "This charming man" opening guitar in particular, and how I asked mysel f: Is it possible that guitar can sound so inspiring? Johny Marr, a guitar hero!

  • Oh, for fuck sake. Are no Johnny Marr videos safe from these people? Like a pubic infestation, constantly bringing up the fucking gallaghers on this genius' videos. Neither has the talent to be held in the same breath as this man. Just because they've sold millions, doesn't make em any good. I'm not saying they're shit, but please, they were commercial as fuck, n on top of that, they inspired countless talent-less wankers to form shitty bands. They done fuck all for music, unlike The Smiths.

  • @BornReady16388 Well said

  • @BornReady16388 Finally someone talking sense! Can't stand those pair of scallys

  • @BornReady16388 You are the man!!!! Smart comment!!!!

  • Those riffs are more addictive than crack, meth or any other drug. I'm so proud to share a birthday with this man !

  • Who cares what bands are like what bands rock has had a great run its time to stop fighting and just start looking back and hopfully we can all enjoy every aspect of it apart from death metal.

  • fuckin' class

  • Amazing.

  • No matter when I hear that song play I suddenly get goose bumps and the memories come flooding back.

  • That's how it should be played... I heard Morriseys recent backing band and they play it all wrong.

  • Godlike Genius!! Love it

  • Looks a bit like an old Gem Archer in this video.

  • @jgfunk I have a pretty recent issue of rolling stone magazine and Johnny Marr is like #53. It even has a quote from Noel Gallagher saying he is a "fucking wizard" on the guitar.

  • @TheGalwayFarmer I know. That is probably why he said what he said. Why are you telling me this?

  • @Kozzy06 well not that I consider Rolling Stone the end all and be all of music opinion, Marr was not on their 100 best guitarists of all time list. I think he should have been. clearly underated by RS at least.

  • Absolutely out of this world thank whatever creator we have for mr maher, we love you Johnny!

  • no metronome or clik track, yet perfect, " on the fly " rhythm track and an instantly fluid yet restrained solo on top. this is what i and 1000's of others work on with our loopers all day long...johnny marr ..you sure "got it " son.

  • If he was going to do an example of guitar layering, he should have done How Soon Is Now? :) hahaha

That song is like an onion.

  • @narutoanimefan300 haha nice analogy. I read somewhere that This Charming Man has about 18 guitars on it

  • @TheGalwayFarmer lol you mean 'How Soon Is Now?' :P

    But yes! It does haha

They could never replicate the song in live performances the way the studio album is because of all the guitar layers! Amazing.

  • I don't think he is underrated.

  • Didn't like The Smiths at the time, but now would kill for a time machine! Majestic!

  • ha ha ha...he looks like al pacino...man , he's the tony montana of the rock

  • @Manyute

    What a shithead!

  • Comment removed

  • @Ol09Ash No, absolutely not.

  • @Ol09Ash wtf no way!

  • @Ol09Ash NO! noel just trie to emulate Marr but fails terribly (this isn't an insult to him, just Marr is far above anyone)

  • ジョニーマーに影響されてギターはじめました

    from japan

  • meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessi! meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessi! :)

  • How good would the return of The smiths complete, so that's Morrissey should be more humble, because millions of fans like the excellent work and the band's songs on the music scene there is a world as competent and talented guitarist Johnny Marr as with respect to all other musicians, so who gives a jewel like a hug to all there friends yearning for good music.

  • MAybeee, I dont really wanna knoooowww, How ye gaard'n groooowsss!!

  • @jonnytheoasisfan Im sorry, Im fan of both guys and proud of it. Marr and Gallagher are even friends themselves! Why hate?

  • @jonnytheoasisfan

Cuz Gallaghers are unbearable fucks who ripped off a few bands, got rich selling cds to retards and really thought they were more popular that the Beatles... hahah those junkies!!!

Can u hear ppl talking about them on the Net?? Anyone covering their ripped-off lousy shit?

They got what they deserved; oblivion!

  • @novembrine1 OK ;D ... angry young man

  • @novembrine1 They didnt get oblivion. Both Gallaghers are successful in new bands. Legends.

  • @BennCrew14

    Galla- who?

  • @tiny856

Yes, selling ripped-off song to retards who believed they were original..

Ops ur one of them, sorry!

  • @novembrine1 shut up ya stupid cunt. do you think oasis where the first band to rip some band off NO are they going to be the last NO. you act like they ripped of every song they wrote which they never. noel gallagher is 1 of the best songwriters in the last 20 years and liam had 1 of the greatest voices in rock in his best days. Oasis changed music in the 90's and layed the path for many new bands in the current era. don't be so naive about band that has achieved so much.

  • @tiny856

Ok I get it, ur one of those morons who bought their shit:

Only thing they layed the path for were fistfights, vodkas and ridicule!

  • @tiny856

Didn't know 90's had bands at all!

  • @jonnytheoasisfan

Coz one made history, the other made me laugh

  • @jonnytheoasisfan That is the only Oasis song I ever loved.

  • guitar hero!!!!

  • Guitar God

  • @pplpilot Its his style of playing that makes him unique you fucking dunce.

  • Comment removed

  • @pplpilot Jeez calm down... Hinton is trying to tell you that you completely missed the point of Johnny Marr. You might know people who can play better or even come up with the same-ish riffs now. But to play and write what Marr did during that time was completely innovative. That's what makes him exceptional.

  • @pplpilot You're on crack dude... Or you've got some serious issues regarding envy

  • @BornReady16388 Ok calm down i'm just saying in general that Johnny plays incredible things that sometimes can't function live! That's all!

  • He's a bit of a genius isnt he .. :)

  • @sledger2003 "a bit"?!

  • the rhythm part kind of sounds like live forever

  • @danielgrimmer Live forever uses the same chords.

  • @danielgrimmer yeah seems obvious now haha first time i noticed it though

  • 3 gays didn't like this

  • @darcythornton I think he was joking.

  • @s3c0ndsk1n Of course, sorry.

  • Sure wish Marr could tour with Moz.....I have always wondered why Morrissey dislikes Johnny so much, or is it the other way around? Marr probably enjoys a nice filet mignon or lamb chop from time to time - much to Moz's dismay ;)

  • @ElvisSchroeder no Marr is a vegan, has been for years

  • Love this song! I play it all the time!

  • to be as good as him is my life goal as a guitarist

  • He is a wizard. This is up there with the best videos on YouTube. Knight the man.

  • beautiful

  • genius...

  • this johnny marr riff is absolutely addicting. i always come back to this link. gotta buy new strings and fix that old strat.

  • this video never gets old!

  • Can anyone explain to me this technique of actually playing a riff in the beginning and then the automatically plays in the bg while Johnny goes on to play the solo portion?

I mean does it get recorded somewhere, and if yes how does it start re-playing so fast? Does Johnny operate it by foot or something? Or is this feature provided by the amp?

    Thanx.

  • @SilentAssassin333 Your question made me giggle. It is called a loop pedal. Generally, you press and hold a button on the pedal, as you play a riff, then release when your done, and if you time it correctly, you have a nice tidy looped riff to play over. Google guitar pedals to find out more. Many effects used by guitarists are provided by foot pedals that take the output from the guitar and change the signal in various ways before it reaches the amp.

  • @ChanelBankierPerry Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation! I'm just a beginner acoustic guitar player, but that doesn't shy me away from gaining more knowledge regarding these electric guitars and amps and such. But that's a really cool invention, I didn't even think of it! Maybe it'll help our dear old Noel Gallagher on his solo tours! :D

Great to see civilized people on YouTube for a change, thanks to greats like Marr. Thank you!

  • this version always gives me goosebumps. it sounds so much more smooth and melodic. spine tingling stuff.

  • The guy is a genius in my book.

  • WOW...

  • Still brilliant! Still Johnny Marr! <3

  • And the funny thing is that he is clearly a very charming man who would no doubt pull over in his no doubt very charming car to help you if you were stuck on a hillside desolate !

  • @Silvergoldstarfish hahaa,,, very nice... appealing idea,,,

  • @Silvergoldstarfish An subsequently flirt with you?

  • The.Best.Ever.

  • More clams than a seafood convention..

  • it's so beautiful

  • @votemiles To his credit, it always sounds real and his own when he plays. There are cover bands that can "do" him better than he does himself, but they sound like iPods compared to that silly-haired bastard's in-the-moment-ness, for lack of a better clumsy-ass compound word.

  • anyone else just in complete awe?

  • Noel Gallagher once said that even Johhny cannot play this anymore ha. Johnny Marr what a legend

  • probably one of the most underrated guitarists ever

  • @jgfunk i know right its always moz moz moz who wrote the fucking music? not moz.

  • @BURN1NGx1NS1D3 Agreed. Johnny Mars sound almost made the smiths and the sound stayed with Moz till this day. That being said Moz is arguably the best singer in history. His song writing is top notch, Powerful emotive vocals, dynamite stage presence, performer, even commercial success without selling out where it counts, the Music. Have you been to one of his shows? Johnny Mar is a virtouso, but Moss is great. Together Unstoppable.

  • @jgfunk - I don't think anyone underrates Johnny Marr!!

  • @jgfunk HUH?

How the heck is he underated? He often gets talked about as one of the finest in British music history.

Do you live in a cave?

  • @jgfunk Who underrates him?

  • you are awesome johnny marrrrrrrrr !

  • Wow! That's very cool n

  • why can't this video go longer?! I've got everything down but the chorus

  • @jvizzle17 hrm... because Johnny stopped playing the song, perhaps?

  • Is there any sound more perfect?

  • they don't teach that at GCSE.

  • I can play it nanananananaa! I'm 14!

  • I can play it just about, and its fucking hard! To be able to play this is one thing but writing it, hearing that melody in your head and making it come to life, you cant learn that.

  • it makes me happy

  • A fucking wizard.

  • (He has a hard time even playing his own music?) Those other musicians watching who actually record music know often times a player writes a difficult part, and when it comes to recording a "take," you do it over and over and over, trying to get the best take you can. Once finished, you keep the best one of the bunch before you pull out your hair. That "one" is the best ever, and you can't repeat.

  • @nativesspoken

True, though sometimes you record what seems like a good take, then after being on tour for 6 months and playing the song100 times, you wind up being able to play it better than you originally did in the studio. In that case the recorded version is weaker and the live version is the definitive one.

  • Its weird played in that key its basically the same chord progression as Live Forever by Oasis!

  • @chbath1 I thought exactly the same!:D great bands...

  • @chbath1 good call, but to be fair its a very common selection of chords. Both are great songs though

  • I am from Trinidad in the West Indies and I cannot begin to even describe how much the music of Johnny marr and The Smiths touched and moved me.just goes to show the power of music.Brilliant.I like this clip.Johnny is a genius, brilliant musician.

  • this sounds so good, even better than the actual song!

  • I cant stop watching this... O.o

  • slippin'

  • Even Johhny Marr isnt as good as Johnny Marr used to be

  • "Even Johnny Marr can't play guitar as well as Johnny Marr" I believe is the quote.

  • hatful of hollow <3

  • He plays stuff that he can't even play

  • Some people are just born genius.

  • I wish I was nore musical and understood more about guitars, so that I too could watch this and go "holy moses!"

Good thing I don't need to be musicially talented to love the tune.

  • anyone know the chords?

  • 1 person couldn't get it right

  • @neverscared92 ...and 2 others weren't very charming...

  • @neverscared92 now 3 lol

  • and don't forget he wrote it before he was 20.

  • @jonasmjr

  • @jonasmjr he wrote it when he was 18

  • Noel Gallagher once said that Johnny Marr was a wizard on the guitar. I couldn't agree more. There is something magical about this, which is beyond the realm of mere mortals.

  • @TubeReel I think he also said something like "Even Johnny Marr isn't as good as Johnny Marr" aswell

  • @webby127 yes, he did say that. Noel was hilarious in that interview.

  • this video never ever gets old.

  • @DoorsAreSecured I must have watched it about 100 times now...every time there is a different reason why it's one of the best melodies of all time

  • @neilmcgrathDOTCOM

    Agreed, man.

  • I agree. I can't play it!!! And I have tried and tried and tried...

  • Fantastic tune, just love it. When I was a teenager and I span this up on the old turn table I was blown away - so much more inventive and melodic to the other stuff in the charts (I won't name any bands as I don't want to offend anyone!!). Marr is great, a very good song writer and musician. And if anyone wants to watch a really good file about The Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White then check out the film 'It Might Get Loud' - if you like guitarists it is a must!!!!

  • fantastic - I like the way he has to think ever so slightly before he can remember exactly how it goes!!

  • FuckinGenius... how Moz and Marr got together ...A miracle....

  • So simple and easy yet so brilliant.

  • @mtsn

Simple and easy!? I'm sorry but what drugs have you been taking? That riff is ingenious and very hard to replicate in the way that Marr performs it live/on the recorded version(s).

  • awesome

  • no comments? no thumbs up?

    this is moving :'-)
