I thought the Australians were using dollars by 1966. I watch Prisoner Cell Block H and someone told me they switched from English pounds and went to the dollar system around 1966. The scene from the fight didn't show Lorna getting sick to her stomach. Plus the way Judy was at this time, so strung out on pills, Sid should had gotten custody. Plus they had another scene they should had shown, Poor Joe being chased out of the house in the middle of the night, running in his underpants and T Shirt
@Sheri451 Barefoot to Liza's house, after Judy went berserk and chased him with a knife. They lived in New York then and it was the middle of winter when that happened.
i saw this when i was in middle school and after part one, we all came into school and talked about it and how sad it was how tortured a great talent was.
i don't like the way they portrayed her in this movie. they didn't show Judy in a good light. they focused more on the negative and really no positive. and there was positive...
@NicoleLeighKarbowski Well, Judy Garland's life wasn't exactly sunshine and, for like of a better word, rainbows. This happened, not exactly, but it did. In fact, I read Lorna's book and it was much, much worse.
@NicoleLeighKarbowski They just showed her making out with a beautiful man and seeming very happy, they showed her triumph at Carnegie hall.Unfortunately her lows were REALLY low. Thats life
There was a scene where Judy was dancing and she fell over Mickey. Also, there was one where they were shooting a scene and the director told her to open her eyes wide and then she fell down from exhaustion. How can I get to see these scenes?
I had the original broadcast on VHS and this scene was different, no blood or nudity. I'm guessing that they had an alternate scene for some versions. This however, is pretty similar to the scene in the book.
Ann Hathaway playing Judy Garland might be ok. but having her sing Garland's songs in her own voice instead of Judy's spells a Bomb in the making and money wasted. Hathaway doesn't have the charisma that Judy had to pull off such a tremendous feat. Why do they keep trying to do Judy bios? the're always filled w/the same rumors & half truths & always show the tragic side instead of balancing the Triumphs & the down times. When they can show both sides of the coin is where Garland's Magic emerges.
I just read one of the first bios of Judy Garland by Gerald Frank and his sources were from Judy's colleagues and Judy's entire family and after finishing it, I realized that much of this Bio tv movie had so many discrepancies. Lorna and Joe weren't in Australia and muc of what Lorna wrote was all about Lorna. The Bio by Mr Frank in 1975 seems to be the most truthful one of all. Sid Luft was correct when he said Lorna's book wasn't accurate.
Judy Garland's life & Career was crammed all in just 47 short years with more accurate Material than Lorna's account. Judy achieved more than any other Person by the time she was 47. I'm still wondering why there were so many discrepancies? I think this was more about Lorna & her trying to be in as many scenes as she could rather than about her mother the real star. I mean Liza was around alot but rarely do you see her in this bio pic. Sid Luft was right.
@NFitalianGuy Well, this biopic is from the point of view of Lorna. Lorna has said she doesn't remember much about Liza as a young girl, because of the major age difference. The book actually continues after Judy's death, as the book is meant to be Lorna's story, not Judy's. I think, though there may be some discrepancies, everything that happened in this film happened in real life, whether in the correct order or not.
Judy Davis was ok in this movie but I think that when it came time for Judy to sing in the movies or TV that they use the real Judy. So this way the audience can see & hear the magic Judy brought to the stage & screen, instead of this lip syncing B.S & When Judy is finished singing then the actress playing her will take over. It's ridiculous that Anne Hathaway who is a foot taller than Judy and doesnt even look like her is goign to be singing Judy's songs in her own voice instead of Garland's.
@NFitalianGuy They did the lipsyncing because nobody else can do Garland's singing properly and they didn't use real footage of Judy cause as the director said on the dvd they didn't wanna make it look like a documentary.
Who is this "Lottie" person? There was her makeup artist, Dottie Ponedel who was written into her MGM Contract after "Meet Me In St. Louis" it was Dottie who gave us The "look" Judy fans from 1944 seen up until she died. I just watched "Impressions of Garland" & seen Dottie Ponedel's interview. She was a staunch supporter of Judy's up until the end. Dottie ended up with M.S. & in the early 50's, didn't travel with Judy anymore because of the disease. Not sure why Lorna made this character up?
there was a Dottie Ponadel who was resposible for judy's new look when she filmed MMISL in late 1943/44. She was responsible the make up and eyebows and was with judy i think until the mid 50's. I never heard of a "Lottie"
Lorna and Joe didn't go to Australia with Judy. Judy didn't go back to the US right after the Australian fisaco, she went to Singapore and Hong Kong, where she made a genuine attempt at suicide and wasn't kidding around. She pulled thru at the last minute, then lived in England for a while. As usual, in reality, Judy heckled her hecklers back, stormed off, not in tears. The Disneyfied "blood towel" scene happened in Hawaii before Australia. Davis's upturned Judy nose looks pretty silly.
@defundthewar Not to mention Lottie's presence from very beginning-she doubles as her hair dresser (she's seen with her in the dressing room during Annie Get Your Gun) and then maid for many years. If I remember correctly, wasn't the character of Lottie several women rolled into one?
@friendsfamilyaccount The whole movie is bullcrap rolled into one and I don't mean itty bitty superficial changes, but important ones. Re: Lottie, it is likely supposed to be Dottie Ponedel, a make-up artist who became one of Judy's full-time flunkies. Her real maid was Alma, married to her butler Lionel, a black couple Judy employed for years to do her dirty work and, like everyone else, Judy owed money. Lorna boasted that only she as a family member knew the truth and could tell it, but...
This scene was in the original television broadcast but was excised from VHS and DVD copies (along with scenes of Judy writing poetry, breaking down on the set of Meet Me in St. Louis and a few others).
@mvezza This came directly from the double VHS version, which I think is complete. I would be interested to hear from other people who saw the very first, original broadcast on network TV because I am pretty sure I do not have the melbourne scene, nor the brief nudity scene on my "taped from TV copy" from 2001 here in the US. The film was also shown later on various cable channels, so maybe they were re-inserted into there.
@mvezza@mvezza What about the scene right after Judy talks to the psychologist - there is a conversation between Minnelli and the psychologist? Was that in the original broadcast? Also, there is a scene after Judy is put on bedrest between Sid and the doctor, and he asks him about Judy's addiction. @friendsfamilyaccount - Ive seen on Oxygen channel- the complete version once but on the first showing the Melbourne concert was edited and the brief nudity scence not on at all- several other scences were cut but in the vhs tapes edition only available thru mail order after the movie aired the first time- about 12 extra minutes are in the vhs version - Hope they release it on dvd complete- I feel like Im cheated when I watch the dvd - its cut for sure
@ozboy39 I have the DVD of this and I haven't watched in in a few years but I am not sure if they kept the deleted scenes in the DVD. The scenes they deleted and are shown on here were great scenes and not sure why they cut them since they were significant scenes & helpful for people to see what Garland went through.
No, this scene was not in the television broadcast. It only appeared on the 2 VHS special edition from Alliance Atlantis...the extended cut was never broadcast, as I saw it and the DVD commentary proves it.
i haven't watched this in full but it doesn't strike as a very good depiction of Judy's life. wasn't very creative either.
