Love how every caption for the album by you is just 'Classic'. If you need more than that one word to explain BOC, my diagnosis: Cult deprivation. My prescription: A stereo at approximately 100 decibels, and a copy of Tyranny and Mutation. Or Agents of Fortune. Or Fire of Unknown Origin. Or Blue Oyster Cult. Or Spectres. Fuck it, just listen to some BOC.
a teen archer is a girl the cult knew, or rather sandy pearlman knew, who was into archery, at stony brook. the rest is up to you. the lyric is self-explanatory. it's about a...oh, work it out for yourself. you'd like to meet her anyway. bring your own bow.
39 years ago already oh, God! 1973 I was little kid riding around in the '62 Buick Special with my mom, grandma, & brothers...maybe go to A&W occasionally or to Manito Park, to feed to duckies. It was when KJRB AM ruled the airwaves, and EXPO '74 was being constructed right next to downtown. I cannot believe I still remember that long ago!
Dude, if mutation is flawed, it is flawed in such a freaking incredible way that is doesn't matter. It's like weird Doors meets Zombies meets Allman Bros. slightly infused with Black Sabbath yet still retaining solid originality. It's so subversive and underground sounding for a major label release that I have to imagine some kind of interesting relationship between someone from Columbia and someone from the BOC camp.
Most people know about "Don't Fear the Reaper" and "Godzilla" but most of those people do NOT know about BOC's early work, especially the first three albums! After that, BOC seemed to "mersh" out with its later work, kinda like what Chicago did (same deal with Chicago ... best work were their first three albums but then seemed to mersh out after the first three).
@themonger1 JUST THE QUESTION I CAME HERE TO ANSWER! LOL. I've recently been looking into birth signs and the sign of Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21st) is known as "The Archer." I was born on Dec. 7th, so that's my sign. Since Sandy Pearlman wrote a lot of their lyrics and most of them had a mystical slant, I'm guessing he means "Teen Sagittarian."
Incredible song. Does anyone know what the hell a "Teen Archer" is? It's puzzled me for over 30 years. I'm sure there is more to it than a teenager who practices archery.
@helloremix Perhaps after hearing that question a million times that is just the best answer to keep it short ? Most artists will tell you any song meaning is left to the imagination of the listener , sometimes the meaning/s even the artists wont realize until it is placed in their imaginations . I have even heard artists say when told what someone else imagine that you are right it is about that too . . . and they never thought of it that way before .
@guysbot There is an old saying...If you want to insult an artist, ask him/her what his/her art means. If s/he wants to insult you, s/he'll tell you...
@gingermol76 My guess is the song is written from the perspective a a teen boy who has an infatuation on a girl that seems perfect - smart, pretty and happy and although the boy is in admiration of this he is also slightly saddened or jaded that he is not as lucky. That is my take. It is kind of similar to the theme of the song that goes, "she's so high, high above me she's so lovely, etc, etc.".
Ahhhhhh.....like fresh air compared to what's coming out of the corporate griss mill these days. This music is like a river that's been cleaned of it's pollution.
What a Kick-Butt classic from the olde days of B.O.C.! They need to make this a semi-regular set piece in their repetoire. Rudy would groove well, rhythmically to this jam! Buck and Richie ...either one, or BOTH, can do intense solos to make it as cool as ever! I think i'll check out the rest of this album while I am here. Thanks for the post!!!!!
Freemasons. The secret societies which are linked to the world and western superpowers that manipulate the wars, aggressions, and all around corruption of lives within these nations and around the globe.
Baby Ice Dog to Wings Wetted Down to Teen Archer is the strongest section of the album. B.O.C. often throws a little too much silliness in with parts of their songs, but Teen Archer rocks all the way through. One of their best.
I think this song may be an allegorical story of the United States in terms of morals, and abilities to dominate the world and how the Statue if Liberty is symbolic of the Whore of Babylon
Ill never forget a college newspaper review of the bands first 2 albums. they were fairly unknown except for album stations and were given the highest ratings for an under rated band.
My bro in law chose my name for Xmas presents in 74. He gave me this LP. I am sooo glad he did. Made some great memories listening to it with my friends.
This song has that combination of powerful, edgy rhythm, tuneful melody, fun vocals and blistering guitar work that is signature BOC. They should do this live more often.
one of the greats.they don't make them like this anymore.I find this song raw, disturbing, and mesmerizing. The album itself is perfect. The experience of the listen is very unique, and has left a lasting impression on me(20 years now)Do yourself a favor, and you will find SHE DON"T CAAAARRRE!!!!!! This is an album that will stand the long test of time.Great work B.O.C

Personally I think Secret Treaties is their masterpiece. Side two of Tyranny is a bit flawed.

@themonger1 I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's an old, wooden ship used primarly in the 18th century to transport cotten over the Atlantic.

The archer is Cupid. Great drumming by Al Bouchard btw, people underestimate how much a good drummer means to a band.
