To be fair to the MacLeods they are kind of relevant in that the song wouldn't exist without a MacLeod. Only the tune is Scottish. The tune of the verse was a traditional rowing tune collected by an Annie MacLeod who supposedly composed the tune of the chorus herself. Words were then put to by Sir Harold Boulton, an Englishman.
This is the best version of this song I've heard -- why isn't it on itunes? And it makes me want to go back to Scotland -- many thanks for posting it!
Absolutely wonderful! Chokes me up something wicked. All I can think of are my folks and my grandma and grandpa. How I wish they were still here to share this with. They would thorouhgly enjoy it. Thanks for sharing these treasures.
@QuietReckoning The MacLeod's of Dunvegan did their utmost to capture Charlie - so it's hardly apt that Dunvegan Castle appears in the video for this song.
@ljotulf I can tell by you're name that you've done some significant research into MacLeod history. So yes, you're right, it's not apt at all. Still a pretty shot, though.

Charlie was under the illusion his army had been destroyed, when in fact in retreated in quite good order.
