hey q! thanks for all the videos there very interesting! I have always wanted to become a doctor but was descuraged by the amount of school. One problem I face is that im not the best with comprehension. Is this a major setback in medical school? How about the MCAT or other tests? Thanks :)
@atruex77 Like reading comprehension? There's a whole section of the MCAT devoted to it unfortunately. Best thing is to read, and read complicated things like articles from the economist and such. Technical, academic stuff.
hey, am i 12 year old,im british and my dream is to become a general paediatrician, i wanted to ask, what are the questions asked in an interview when applying to get into med school?
in year7 or(7th grade) i was a bit naughty(because i didnt know how long it takes to become a paediatrican, i just thought its once you completed high school then get into college and BAM your a paediatrican, i didnt know how much dedication it is)
@shardayandsarah Honestly I applied to med school 4 years ago and I don't remember what they asked me. I imagine why I decided to apply would probably be the most common but I feel that at the end of the day they're just trying to make sure you aren't crazy. As far as the hardest thing, I'm not entirely sure what you mean. Subject matter? Life sacrifices?
I want to be a pediatric it is my dream! but it really takes tooo long to get into the med school and so on!!
I heard of a program called PA ( physician Assistant ) and I would like to know if you have any idea about it either its good bad,, what do u think about it??
@remolove91 yeah, PA or nurse practitioners (NP) do somewhat similar work without a medical degree but they are very limited in their prescription power and specialty choices. If your dream is mostly clinic work, then that may work out very well for you. If your dream is surgery or something more technical, maybe not. It is definitely a valid choice though so I would research it a little bit and see if it lines up with what you want.
@DoctorishQ HI, I'M 14 YEARS OLD AND I'M I ALREADY FINISH HIGH SCHOOL I'M DOING MY FIRST YEAR OF COLLEGE, AND I START WITH BIOLOGY MAJOR BUT I'M THINKING ABOUT CHANGE MY MAJOR TO NURSING CAUSE THE ROAD TO BECOME A DOCTOR IS TOO LONG AND HARD BUT I KNOW TOO MANY DOCTORS AND THEY ALL TELL ME TO DO NOT CHANGE BEACAUSE I'M YOUNG AND I HAVE POTENTIAL BUT I'M VERY CONFUSE ABOUT THAT, I REALLY WAN'T TO BECOME A DOCTOR BUT THE ROAD IS TOO LONG WHAT WILL U DO IF U FIND YOURSELF IN MY SITUATION?
@hjestrella Well, if you really are 14 and already in college, I would say why are you so worried about time? You have way more time than most of us. If you're confused about being a doctor vs being a nurse, spend some time volunteering or shadowing and learn more about what they actually do and think about what kind of work you enjoy more. As for me, I already made my choice and I didn't even start med school till I was 24 years old so I guess my overarching advice is DON'T STRESS! :)
hello, im a second year medical student studying at Cairo University, Egypt...and medicine here is 6.5 years excluding the internship year, so yeah, medicine here is 7.5 years long!! i just want to know, what are the subjects u cover in ur first to years out there in the US if u dont mind..
@mawaddah2010 Nope, don't mind! At my school we went by systems so cardiology, pulm, reproduction/ endocrine, etc. Everything about the system at once: anatomy, physiology, infections, neoplasms, pharm, etc. Aaaand that took two years. Third year is required rotations in various fields, fourth year is mostly elective rotations while you make your residency application then you graduate to residency, still in training but you get paid and people call you doctor :)
@DoctorishQ Could a P.A transition to become a doctor? Or do they have to take the 4 years of medical school required? I am scared of getting myself into debt. I opted to go P.A and save enough money where I could go to medical school.
@runhorun No, you need to go to med school to be an M.D. Yes you'll have debt but you'll be better compensated and from what I hear paying it back is significant but not impossible after you graduate.
@PyoYoungX Sorry, just noticed this comment. The science is not difficult, but VERY time consuming and it doesn't stop after 2 years. It NEVER stops, EVER. First and second years are probably like 5 stressful because while you take tests, nobody ever asks you things to your face and certainly you never get told you are stupid or lazy to your face if you don't know the answer. That happens on the wards. You take what you can get when you get it for recreation. You know when you're slacking.
@DoctorishQ Thanks for your answers! I thought you forgot about me. This is good to know. Time consuming, but not necessarily difficult. And as far as them being hard on you, saying harsh things, I've been to army boot camp. I've heard worse lol
i'm a high school student and i have a passion for medicine, my dream is to be a surgeon, im quite ambivalent on what i type of surgeon i want to pursue. probably heart or obgyn.
for med school, does getting into and graduating med school require extreme intelligence or is that as long as you work hard, intelligent enough, and have the passion???
im very scared i wont be able to make it into or if im in meds school, and it would mean alot if you help me understand more about med school.
@juicyalavida You should look at what I wrote to skycaptain. Don't feel the pressure now, think about it during college, get some hands-on experience and see if you like it. Go for it if you do, don't get down on yourself if you don't. Admission is never a guarantee for anybody so when you do go to college, hook up with an advisor sooner rather than later and they can tell you exactly what you need to do to maximize your chances. I hope this answers your question.
I am in high school now and I would love to pursue a career in medicine. But I always put off by the immense hours of studying. How did you get through it? What advice can you give a high school student? How competitive was it to get into the school from being and undergraduate? Hope all goes well.
@skycaptain141 No pressure to make the decision now. Volunteer, get some experience, see if you like the work. If you enjoy what you do, the hours won't seem that long. And don't beat yourself up if you end up changing your mind. I was a terrible high school student but all that matters is your college performance and the MCAT, of course. You can get average GPAs and MCAT scores on US world report if you're curious. It's early in the game still though, so don't forget to have some fun!
@Netjack let me guess... you are in the process of/thinking about applying. :) Better than getting my stats, you should get average numbers for any school that you're really interested in. Things change year to year and every school is different so rather than my info (anecdotal at best), you should check out the averages.
@Netjack Sorry, I did want to mention about activities that if you talk to any undergraduate advisor, they'll tell you that to be competitive you need to shadow a doctor or do research blah blah blah. I went to undergrad in a small town so it kinda wasn't possible for me. What I found is that applying to school is like finding a husband. Your best shot is to do what you love and be yourself and they'll chose you for you. Maybe not as many as you'd like but you'll end up in the right place.
I took a year off to travel in the middle of college, and another year off at the end to work and apply, so I was 24 when I started. I am 26 now. If you go straight through high school to college to med school, you are 22 when you start.

I'm looking to get into med school. I just want to know a few things from someone who's been there.
Is the science difficult, or is it just that there's just so much of it, it's time consuming?
Do a lot of people drop out in the first and second year?
How stressful is the 1rst and second year on a scale of 1 - 10?
Do you have any fun during the first 2 years? How do you balance your time as far as books vs recreation?
