In the interview he did with Cenk, Assange mentioned the 1917 Espionage Act. What he didn't mention was the series of other laws passed with that act, essentially making it illegal to convey any message that ran contrary to the Government narrative of WWI, even privately. The government was able to shut down political activists, journalists, and even entire publications.
This is not a historically novel situation. It can get worse.
