Well that was interesting and stuff but for one, mercedes deisel engines are weaker than a sick 3 legged dog to begin with. Secondly all these people commenting about how bad their cat engines are, are most likely getting less than 5.5mpg and have heavier empty weights. Take a pete 379 with a 600 detroit 60 series and a straight 10spd with 3.73 rears. It will out accelerate faster, hang with or pass up the same trucks with a cat and get better than 6mpg and legally haul about 1000lbs more
oh wow im really suprised a pussy truck wins twice but it will never beat the true diesel truck that is something a diesel can be proud of not the pussy truck
Great race, Ok so that's a 1/4 mile, two trucks with different transmissions. Now lets see 100 mile race at the speed limit and see the economy factor. Wanta bet on that one? Also how much energy does it take to make a gal of LNG? One hell of a lot more than diesel I can tell you that. Still this is a milestone.
Really, let me race the Natural Gas Sterling with my Peterbilt 379 ext-hd 3406 Cat. and 10sp Eaton Fuller and fully loaded 53ft trailer.. I got my truck fully loaded going 125 mph down the road...
Well no wonder the natural gas truck is an automatic the diesel is a straight ten (that the driver missed atleast one gear on that I seen) of course it is going to out pull and out run in that situation. Put both trucks with both automatics or straight tens and see what happens
we have two identical sterlings with the same engine but one is an auto and the other is a ten speed. that truck that lost could have been half empty and still lost. them autos fly.
@velocityvehiclegroup Uh, LNG is Liquified Natural Gas. nitrogen is a noncombustible. You GOT to be a marketing major to say something like that, and not an engineer. Egads!
Sam Memello of Two Guys Garage must think they're a great truck also, he uses one for a motorhome. Too bad Chris Patterson of Freightliner; the parent company, has decided to "kill" the Sterling brand and close the plant in St.Thomas,Ont. Canada

What they don't show is the third truck -- the LNG tanker that has to follow it around.

From the comments, it seems there are a LOT of upset Diesel fans out there. I suppose accepting change and alternatives is hard.

@22tmack
I agree with you on your comment there isn't a damn LNG truck that can beat a diesel when it comes to long haul.

that allison 6 speed has to be an automatic.

yea I agree with knosejt. If you hear the engine of the natural gas truck you don't hear the pause of the shifting. Unlike the diesel truck.

both of the trucks are trash my friend drives one of those trucks and its already falling apart

is the left truck a gas truck?
I didn't know there're such big gas engines for those big trucks..
americanstylefreak 3 years ago
The left truck is the LNG truck, it uses green Liquid Nitrogen Gas for fuel instead of the right truck which is a standard Diesel Engine.
