  • I was fortunate enough to have Scott as a student for a couple of years during his time at North Texas, mainly sharing the trumpet methods of the great Don Jacoby with him. He was and still is an amazing young player! I was in attendance at this concert and after playing lead the whole night, this was the last tune on the program. What very few folks realize is that he was very sick with a flu bug that night with a high fever. He could play like that on a night most of us would be home in bed.

  • @frankreed601 Hey Frank, I didn't know you had scooter as a student. Very cool.

  • Great , but missed the last note

  • The craziest part of this video is that is from a One O'Clock Lab concert and theres no telling how many tunes they had already played before this one or how many more they were gonna play after this lip destroyer.

  • Just enjoy the music for what it is. I enjoy both versions very much. However, if I had to choose one version to be the last one to hear before I die, it would be this one.

  • I have heard a few guys try this. Arturo, Eric Miyashiro, Adrea Tofanelli etc. Scott Englebright definitely did the best out of any of those guys.

  • Great GREAT tone. Clarity is key in this song, and this guy did great with it. Gotta love Maynard.

  • I went to UNT as a trumpeter and played in the 3 o clock I think before the one o clock came out that night. Wow - it was electric. Absolutely amazing - I was always astounded by Scott's abilities. He is one of the best young lead players ever - he can play high, in tune and play fast bebop as well. This live execution was out of this world.

  • While not a big name among the public, Scott Englebright is one of the best around.

Grew up in Kingsburg, in the California Central Valley. The first time I heard him was with Maynard in Washington D.C. in a small club. I absolutely astonished how good he was.

  • BEAST!

  • so uh, this guy.....WAY better than the bobby shew version!!!

  • when one of my friends was born, scott englebright was one of the first 5 people to hold him as a baby. :) lucky kid.

  • For those of you who do not know, Scott played at least one tour as lead trumpet with Maynard's band.

  • if it werent for the video i would have thought maynard came back

  • Why have I never heard of this guy before today?

  • Absolutely amazing ... hits pitch centre in the stratosphere ... just watched the Bobby Shew version ... no comparison to the sound and energy put out here ... this guy feels it and nails the whole chart

  • he killed this, every single note! It should be mentioned he also had to play lead trumpet around performing this, which the Boss did not have to do.

  • did donny film this?

  • Does anyone know where I can purchase the parts for this? Or even just the solo trumpet part?

  • that Owned...

  • damn, he looks like he wasn't even trying (until you get to the end). that's why I like Scott Englebright

  • Not even Arturo can play it like Maynard could...This dude easily comes in a very close second to the original....Outstanding!!!!

  • @elelsey Arturo plays it better than this guy. =\

    This version sounds too rushed.

  • @IIIIIIIIIIllllllllll Sorry man.....while I agree that the tempo on this was a bit faster than the original, Englebright had a better tone, was more accurate, and had a stronger higher register all around than Arturo. Don't get me wrong, Arturo is one of my top 3 MUSICIANS on ANY instrument to listen to....he just didn't get it right on his version of this tune....When you miss notes on an edited recording, then that takes you out of the conversation!!!

  • @elelsey Yea, totally agree. Scott also did it at the end of playing lead for the One O'Clock. It seems like that didn't phase him one bit either.

  • @pedroesteban86 Holy Crap that's awesome!!!

  • very ggod job, missed the last note. he took breaks that Maynard never did in this song, but its a great try.++++stars

  • Maynard was my idol. But this seems so effortless. Give the guy a break. Your comments are pretty harsh.

  • My band director is playing 2nd trumpet in this video of the University of North Texas one o'clock lab band

  • Watch his stomach move as he breaths and compresses the air.

  • Why do they even bother trying to mic him? What a fucking freak. That's mind-blowing.

  • still the best after all these years

  • Truly amazing, MF left a legacy of fabulous trumpet players-- this 'Tastee bro' is one of the very very best!

  • He played a double c and didn't even move, thats crazy, he is one of the best and this is when he was in college woah

  • Why would you move to play a double C?

  • even maynard looked like he was working hard. scott is known for his effortless approach to the horn. he just stands htere and you'd never know what was coming out of his horn if you couldn't hear it for yourself.

  • yeah and also most people change their facial expressions because it is harder obv.

  • seems like human nature..most ppl move a little when they play a note that high. unless they have amazing high range.

  • It doesn't get any easier than that folks. Amazing.

  • He is awsome, he got into maynard's band becuase of this one of his friends sent this recording to maynard himself and he played with him on one album and toured for like 2 years, he has such power, he is probably only a few years older than when this was written for maynard in the 50's, maybe not even,

  • are there any more clips from his performance with this band?

  • awsome

  • Outstanding control, tone, range.. Very well played. The only issue is that it sounds a bit mechanical.. labored, if you will -- at least until the solo break. Watch his facial expressions and body posture. See how it changes at the solo.

    Again -- OUTSTANDING.

  • LOL he thought about that F at the end. lol.

Amazing Man!!! really. Nice control, great air, you look really relax!

BTW the air bags that are saying crap, don't listen. They are not up to your level.

  • Shit's loud!!! Just the way it should be.

  • ridiculous control

great tone quality on the high notes

    RANGE

    solo ability

Maynard is smiling on you scooter

  • Wow, this video just gets better and better every time I see it!

  • i dont care wat anyone says! for a man of his age to preform something of this level takes some talent. you have to rremember people that he was only about 23 or 24 when he recorded this and he has done an amazing job. this is good by anyones standards

    well done scott!

  • What year is this video?

  • shit great job. that is one hard ass piece. maynard was a monster, and one of a kind. I'm sure that there are very few people in the world who can tackle that song and live to see another day. 5 stars.

  • haha you guys that talk about how scooter did bad on this and how he's no maynard cracks me up

are you aware that this was the video that maynard himself watched? this is the vid that got him into maynard's band because he LOVED it

in my opinion, and in the Boss's opinion, this rocked.

great interpretation, and scott KILLED it

    awesome

  • @steevojackass Exactly dude. Some of these folks on here are idiots or just jealous!

  • Dude, he was in college at the time. I'd say for a college student, this was as close to perfect as humanely possible.

  • little does the general population know that maynard ferguson was actually from the same planet as superman, thus allowng him to play better than this.

  • i have this on my ipod!!!

  • I will take the Boss's thoughts and feelings about Scooter over some of the comments here. (no offense)

If you never had the chance to watch Scooter play with MF, then you might not realize how much MF thought of Scott. There were many times on stage, when MF would seem almost unaware of everybody else in the room, as he stood to the side, and listened to Scooter play.

  • that ain't no .480 bore horn and 0 mouthpiece. there are a lot of guys with range but only one maynard ferguson. remember maynard's overall power and musicianship as well as his range. most trumpeters couldn't touch his ability to improvise. still; a good effort and i'm sure scott will end up making lots of studio money. UNT is a fantastic music school.

  • wait...do you have any idea the things that scott has done, and the people he's played with.

  • holy crap man. I'd almost think that you somehow recorded Stan Kenton twice, but damnit man. Wonderful job!!! Great band too.

  • Arturo Sandoval has the exact transcription note for note in his evolution of jazz tribute book.

notice he did miss an Aflat at 1:47 as well as other crucial notes. the ending was awful on the bands part, no dynamic contrast. he's a screamer. but no finesse

  • come on, how are you going to say those things???? Did you hear all the trumpet he was playing????????

  • @jftrumpetier you have no idea what you are talking about. How can you possibly try and dissect a song like this? It's one of the hardest tunes to play there is. the fact it was written especificaly for Maynatd Ferguson should tell you that. There is only a handfull of people on the planet who can play this. Don't be such an asshole.

  • anybody know the exact name of this chart? i might be interested in playing it.

  • The name of the song is "Maynard Ferguson". It was written by Shorty Rogers for Maynard Ferguson as a feature with the Stan Kenton Band.

  • @yourbrassinstructor it is maynard ferguson

  • @yourbrassinstructor keep dreamin' bitch!

  • Awesome

  • I liked this very much, but I kept having the feeling that he was not playing HIMSELF, but rather was concentrating on sounding like Maynard. Still, it was pretty terrific. jenny

oh, and I DON"T play the trumpet!

  • trumpetman1989, dude that is exactly the same as the original. maybe you should change your title. I play trumpet too and thats some crazy work. it sounds completely effortless which is the effect needed.

  • excellent effort. sounded great!

  • Tastee

  • trumpetman1989.........think and investigate before you speak. For your information Maynard Ferguson himself saw Scott Englebright playing in this video and contacted him to join the band. This is in the same exact key as the original. I would not by any means brag that you are a trumpet player and you would know....because you are completely clueless.

  • This is in the same key as Maynard himself played it.

  • WTF are you listening to? This is the same key that MF played.

  • lol, it's definitely the same key.... but i'm pretty sure he jusy pretended to play while they had a MIDI clip pouring out from speakers that were hidden. oh yeah he didn't get to play in maynard's band or anything

  • He did play with Maynard Ferguson. In fact, Scott Englebright used to play Lead-Trumpet for Maynard. I believe Maynard hired him, after hearing him perform with this band.

  • no thats really scooter hes just that good. He deffinatly did tour with maynard and they became good friends.

  • @trumpetman1989 not only is it in the same key but, if you listen to the recording the University of North Texas recorded that year, he played even cleaner than this and his be bob section was even cleaner than this and he really held out the last notes. This is most definitely the smae key,

  • @trumpetman1989 get some ears dickface. Same key as Maynard.

  • @trumpetman1989 Yoy must be deaf then. It's in the original key. The only difference is that it's a little faster than Maynard's version.

  • @trumpetman1989 Well you must be a shitty trumpet player then.

  • @trumpetman1989 Best comment ever

  • @trumpetman1989 Im a Trumpet player too and i would happen to know that this in the original key that Maynard happen to play it in. if you had half a brain and were really a trumpet player you WOULD know that Scott Englebright is one of the few people, there are any others, who have played it just as good as Maynard if not, in my opinion, better. YOU'RE AN IDIOT if you really think they lowered the chart for Scooter. You sir should quit playing trumpet if you're going to make smart ass remarks.

  • yeah go scott

    i know him whoop

    hes my friends uncle

    whoop

  • Actually, after I saw Maynard live at my high school, I got to go back and speak with him and his guys for a while and there was a huge bruise ring around his lips.

  • HAH!! interesting man, thats awesome that he was at your highschool

  • To all those who compare: Scooter and Maynard are both the dog's bollox. both amazing so just enjoy!!!

  • Incredible performance! He knows how to play the Dubba C!!!

  • How can you compare Clifford Brown and Maynard...two completely different players, styles, sounds. Maynard did have some pretty good fingers as well. He wasn't just a high note guy.

  • Get listening boy? I've been playing for 20 years and have played and done an unthinkable amount of listening both critical and otherwise to all sorts of music over the years. If I don't personally warm to Maynard's tone, should it bother you. Clifford Brown, now there's a (jazz) trumpet player with a tone that I like. Do you know of his playing?

  • In Maynard's younger days, he had glorious tone. I actually have some recordings of Clifford, Maynard, and another trumpet player (I forget who...) playing with Dinah Washington. Phenomonal recordings. Check them out if you get a chance.

  • it's "I've Got You Under My Skin" and the other trumpet player is Clark Terry

  • listen to invention for guitar and trumpet on kentons New Concepts of Artistry in Rhythm. 19 year old maynard burnin up some solos

  • Do ya'll realize this is one of Maynards former lead players...and he was abou t20 at this recording.

  • I know. He's an amazing player.

  • Apart from literally 'just' high notes, I don't how Maynard has such a following. He has a terrible tone, not nice at all on the ear. I liked Maynard Ferguson until I was about 19.

I'd much rather listen to this guy's sound - just wish he was playing his own stuff. Nice player.

  • I agree with you 100 percent. I liked him playing "Maynard Ferguson" and that early stuff, but the later like "Don't Let the Sun Come Down on Me" is just unlisten able (to me). I have friends that love it thought, so each to his own, I guess.

  • hmm this guys pretty good but unfortunately he will never have maynards lip ability. he uses way too much pressure and when maynard played this song he was like 19 putting him way ahead of this guy

  • what ru talking about?

this guy is known for his technique on using absolutely no pressure and all air...and his tone is much fatter than maynard's version in my opinion...but maynard is still god in my book=]

  • maynard i think had the fattest tone in the high range in my opinion but whatever... i got to see him at my school before he died so im biased

  • Sorry but that's very untrue. When Scott plays it looks effortless. There is no one I've heard that sounds like and plays like him. His precision in the upper register is unmatched in my opinion. There may be someone else, but Scott is just unbelieveable. This looked like a walk in the park to him.

  • hey search this if u want to see effortless (Allen Vizzutti plays Carnival of Venice).

  • yeah allen shows no effort in his playing but Scott has a little more power in the upper register than Allen but Allen will always be a god at what he does.

  • Great precision. Reminds me of the Maynard of old. Only wish I could do half as well. Beautiful stuff.

  • and one other thing......you all are comparing digital audio to the old 10mm films that have been in a basement for 40 years. yes the sound quality is getting lost. the new recordings will always sound better compared to the old ones.

  • The difference between Maynard and Scott is that Scott makes it look easy. Very relaxed. Not shoving the thing in his face at 100 lbs. per square inch.

  • Maynard was one of my favorite people, a great musician and a great showman, yet always a little shy and humble. He set the bar for all trumpet players who follow, and few will match him in every respect.

  • this scooter guy is a pretty good player, but you all are comparing him to Maynard Ferguson. I'm not sure how anyone can say Maynard was not musical. From 1950 until the day he died, he was touring and doing things that everyone on the face of the earth dreams of. Maynard had more "music" in his pinky than any of you people have in your bodies. You all make me sick. Enjoy music for what it is, and stop being critical assholes.

  • um, waddlehead, did i ever say that maynard ferguson was not musical? No, i did not. Maynard Ferguson is amazing and i frankly don't appreciate you saying that i said he wasn't great. Yes i've heard all of those song except "ole" many, many times. All i said was that i thought scooter performed this particular song with more power in his sound.

  • Sorry, trumpetlicious. If you had looked a little further, you might have seen that I was not responding to what YOU said, but to what TheLetterA said.

  • P.S. -- Scott Englebright comes the closest I've heard to matching MF's abilities. Scooter is one of the best in the world, IMHO...

  • i'm sorry but i've heard both versions of Maynard Ferguson (the other one by maynard) and i have to say that scooter's sound seems more powerful. They both did amazing though.

  • Maynard was just a "screech player" and not very musical? That's just such an idiotic statement, it hardly deserves a response. Have you not heard "Maria," "Ole'", "'Round Midnight," "Danny Boy," "MacArthur Park," "Gospel John," "Summertime," et al, ad infinitum? No one has ever been able to equal the beauty, power, intonation, and stamina that Maynard had in his prime, which was from about 1950 - 1980.

  • You are a fucking idiot..

Maynard did what he did for 50 years and most couldn't hold any part of his jockstrap..

    Get a clue...

  • Maynard played high, sure. But he was a screech player. Even in his younger days as a lead player, it was a crapshoot whether or not he would hit the right notes. It was impressive, but not really quite "musical." (See the Tasty Bros.)

Maybe Scooter can't play as high as Maynard, sure. But based on a comparison between his playing and Maynard's, it's pretty obvious who the better player is.

  • what on earth are you talking about maynard was one of the musical trumpet players of the century listen to maria.

  • scooter is freakin insane. i think that he plays better than maynard himself.(not tryin to disrespect)

  • Maynard is the only lead player that could play with a orchestra and blend.

  • mayard ferguson was awesome.

    when he was younger.

    up to the late 70's.

    early 80's.

but this is the best i've heard anyone attempt since maynard.

  • He probly uses the Wedge breathing method. If you want to play high, you should check it out. All of the great lead players use some form of it. Basically, all of the air pressure is generated deep in your stomach and you release it like a pressure tank. Gives great range when you learn it right, gave me another 5th on my range.

  • Yep, I got to see Scooter live in 1996, they played at a high school in the Houston area. One of the best nights ever. Carl Fischer, Tom Garling, it was absolutely incredible!! Scooter is one of the best there is. Two players from Big Bop Nouveau have even gone on to play with Tower of Power now.

  • Carl Fischer is unbelievable.

  • lmao.. what? Bro, this is Scott in this vid, not Carl lol..

  • I think this was supposed to be posted as a reply to a different message earlier about Carl...

  • yea i know what you mean i guess, i didn't really know partly because i'm not famaliar with late maynard.

lol it seems like its effortless for this guy to hit the real high notes, makes it look easy :)

  • Que VIVA!!

  • Scooter reminds me of the guy from Beer Fest and Super Troopers. I think his name was Farva in Super Troopers. No offense to Scooter, i think he's a badass.

  • haha yeah rod farva =] Ive always watched this vid and thought the same thing lol. he is indeed a badass though =]

  • It is unbelievable how well a college student could play this tune considering that there are only a handful of trumpets in the world who could realistically even attempt this song. Great job Scott.

  • da Scooter is da man

  • Scootet is the best!

  • what a big fat sound by Scooter, the closest I've heard to actually sounding like Maynard

  • Can I just say... This is the closer. Meaning, if they played any decent sized set at all he's been playing lead for an hour before ripping this chart.

Chops of steel my ass, his chops make steel look like warm butter.

  • dude.. i live like 30 minutes away from UNT, a lot of sick shit happens there. lol

  • Sounds higher than Maynard?

  • It ain't the mouthpeice or horn... It's a natural gift and AIR power. I worked with Buddy Morrow for 15 years (the "Maynard of the Trombone") and in his prime could play on a GARDEN HOSE and still kick ass!

  • Can Buddy Morrow play higher than David Steinmeyer? :D

  • No, but Buddy's chops were unbelievable. I played lead trombone in the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra for him for 2.5 years and he routinely ended 4 hour dance gigs playing "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" and ending on a G below double Bb. Loud and strong. How'd he do it? Talent and AIR pressure! He was amazing....

    Jon

  • Scott Englebright DID play with Maynard's band. One of his friends sent in the recording of "Maynard Ferguson" to Maynard himself, and Maynard offered Englebright the lead spot in his band, where he toured for a year and a half.

  • The background player play much better then "scooter"...

High notes are not always beautiful...

  • may I note that the vast majority of these "high notes" are written, and he is only improvising on some of that. He doesn't have the best soloing, but he can play better in the upper register than most players I've heard in the current decade.

  • Scooter is the man....Plays great jazz too, even below high C and makes some very good jello squares.

  • What mouth piece does this cat use??

  • it's a damn nice job!!

  • I hope I get to meet Scott some day before the Aliens come to take him back home.

  • Yes, Scott was with Maynard's Big Bop Nouveau and recorded with him in 1996 on the "One More Trip To Birdland" recording. The great Carl Fischer was also in the trumpet section and the outstanding trombone player, Tom Garling. That was a terrific band.

  • I sent this link to several musician friends. This guy is awesome! He does a better Maynard than Maynard! Maynard would LOVE him! Probably would have ended up in The Boss' band!

  • Scott toured for several years with Maynard in the late 1990's. I believe that he played on the One More Trip to Birdland CD. From the stories that I have read, Maynard used to like to watch Scott play during the concerts.

  • This guy is awesome. I have heard many trumpeters attempt Maynard Ferguson (the song), but this guy is the closest to matching MF's intensity in the upper register!! and he looks so effortless, I wiah I had chops like that!!

  • Tastee

  • good, but not quite like maynard

  • I agree. There's a certain magic about Maynard that you can't put into words. Scott will always be one of my all time favorites though.

  • he is awways in tune cause he never use lip only air to take the hight notes ...man, if you all know how important is da air....

  • I was at that concert. It was even more impressive live. He is so relaxed while he plays. The most impressive thing is that he is always in tune. There are a lot of people that can play high, but not many that master it like Scott. He's the man with the Dubba C.

  • now here's the question everyone wants to know: does he use the notorious right pinky for those high notes? :P

(I can't really tell in this vid)

  • I dont think its rite to juge a trumpet player cause he uses his right pinkey. It also doesnt matter where you set your mouthpiece. its placed were its conmfortable

  • I'm going to assume not so much. He was one of the Tasteebros and I know they were advocates of using your air to play high.

  • is this the one o'clock? I freakin' love that group! Bad ass lab band in texas

  • It's not that he's doing this...He's doin' it with ease! Pure Beast on the horn!

  • Man, can he play. Out of this world chops!!!

  • wow and that was when he was in college!

  • I love this song. I thought Maynard was the only one who could play this ;) Now I gotta get practicing it.

  • freakin awesome. wow.

  • hahaha, Mouthpiece and Trumpet don't matter..... you have to have skill first.... This is some sick ass shit!!!!!

  • pretty friggen good

  • So, over 1000 viewings and the only other comment is "what kind mouthpiece does he use?"

  • Wow, impressive.

Do you know what Scott's trumpet model and mouthpiece he used in college?
