The kind of cut in the end that you're talking about is called a "dove tail." It's easier to do if you just fold the ribbon in half and cut it at an angle, rather than trying to cut out the triangle. Not only does it look good, but it keeps ribbon from fraying.

Very cute! One little tip if you don't mind me adding my two-cents worth is when you cut the slits at the fold so you can cinch the ribbon cut triangles on either side instead the same way you mention for the ribbons tails. If you do this it cinches the center of the bow tighter and you will notice a difference in your bow.

I good way to learn how to make different bows is to take apart store bought ones that people attach to gifts they give you!
