@mkg00179504 I'm watching PLANE videos, just happened across the PIA one. Sorry, stereotypes are usually based off of actual behavior. Turn on your TV if you don't believe me.
after watching this a few times - i recon the pilot just messed up , he almost stalls for an answer twice- strange to get landing gear warning so late - and he was so confident that every thing was ok for second aproach
@sepholdem I reckon it was just the gear down light not going on, but they cycled the gear back up and down then the gear down lights came on. Gear doesnt do down until final, and then its a few seconds from putting the lever in the gear down position to all the green 'down' lights going on. They would have had an automated warning of "TOO LOW, GEAR!".
There is no a specific reason for that. It's up to the controller whether to ask or not, usually for traffic avoidance or coordinating the emercgency vehicles. Looks strange though that the crew just noted that the gear was not locked down properly in an earlier stage of the approach. Gears must be down and locked well before reaching the minimum. I would rather believe it's a GA for being too high on the threshold...My 2 cents.
I agree, the pilot must've not had his F/D on or something and attempted a visual approach, or maybe he let it wander too much. It did look high for the vector he had.
dont u just hate go-arounds! i fly on a flight simulator on my computer and i eventually had to turn off "other traffic" because they would be like 20 ft in front of me....then i have to start all over again!!!!!!!
If its microsfts flight ismulator try using the air traffic control or the ATC. Just press the Headphone button in the cockpit. Then request a landing by contacting that airport. You wont' usually have problems then. Its quite fun to, realistic!
it is...but i use the flight planner and use IFR and every time there a stupid beechcraft or cessna...they just go too slow...i mean im doing about 140kts and they are doing about 40kts...so...i run over them
haha I know what you mean...its nice to have traffic on but its not too realistic. You should try flying online.. Very professional, everyone flying is of a high standard, and the traffic is properly maintained by real ATC, so you dont have those issues as with the computer traffic.
Could it be that reason was one big fat lie. If there was an unsafe grear warning why did he retract the gear so quickly? Should he not abort landing with the gear out assess the situation contact ops for advice maybe do a flyby or even recycle the gear? Why retract it so early if it may have a problem? Seems strange to me.
I guess the ATC guys were in little too hurry to know the problem. They shouldn't have been. As it is very clear that when you are cleared for landing you are also cleared for go around. One can go-around for any reason. Good landing though.
They like to know ASAP incase there is a problem, hence the continued questioning. Also if its a busy traffic pattern, a lot has to happen to get a plane back in line for the runway.
I have dignity. i am also not using anyone to earn me a reputation, but forming a plane lovers group. Check out my channel, send friend requests and subscribe. send me questions on my channel, and i will gladly answer you, so, remember, ALL PLANE LOVERS, UNITE!
I was on a KLM jet going in to Athens, Greece, when the same kind of thing happened to me in 1997. My girlfriend saw some of the crew later on the ground near baggage reclaim and asked them what had happened and why the plane had so suddenly gone into a steep climb only a few metres above the runway. The crew said that seeing as there was a big airplane on the runway dead ahead of them it seemed like a good idea. Straight up. lol...not
Describing the problem to ATC is not a priority. They tell the tower WHAT they're doing, that's enough. And, fly the aeroplane. Once the problem has been diagnosed, then tell ATC. PIA pilots are pros, and you, Mobius, clearly are not.
OK, wait a sec you fucking idiot. First of all they DIDNT choose not to tell ATC what was goign on. The problem was they were not UNDERSTANDING what ATC was saying because of poor communication skills. If ATC is asking you over and over again and you cant or dont want to tell them then all you have to say is 'PIA, flight code stand by' so they know that you heard them. And ATC needs to know what is going on with the aircraft so they can plan accordingly. You dont know shit...
ATC asked twice... and the second time they told them... general rule of thumb for pilots is "Aviate, Navigate, Communicate"... fly the plane, navigate where you're going, then tell ATC the problem... the first prioritiy is making sure that the plane is ok and flyable, that it is safe for the pilots and the passengers, then ATC learn what they need to know. Also, the pilots say afterwards that an undercarriage light wasnt working or something along those lines... wanna land with no gear? gd luck

Wrong...they were asked by 2 different ATCs, a total of 3 times. 1st some dude asked, then the chick asked which they answered to but confirmed their heading instead of answering the question that proves that they DIDNT understand English and then the chick asked the third time to which they answered..."unsafe landing gear light" as if they were reading it off of something instead of answering the questions spontaineously.
Did you read what i said? "Aviate, Navigate, Communicate"... where they're going is more important than why they went round... its an international airport thus there are lots of other aircraft in the vacinity so whether they continue on their heading or not for the go-around and approach is more important. Its nothing to do with understanding english or not because english is the internationally recognised language for ATC comms. Also, you have checklists for certain procedures.
And furthermore, if the pilots did not understand something they have to say "repeat that please" or "confirm *this or that*" etc.. there is very specific phraseology to which they have to follow which they do. Tell me, how much do you actually know about flying? Evidently not enough. "You feel me?"

I dont give a shit what you said, you are trying to dodge my analysis below. I proved to you that they had poor to none communication skills and sometimes, people from certain cultures try not to ask again because they think its embarrasing. Which is not true in North American culture.
I don't know, because this isn't a great landing. It isn't. Too much overflying the runway and lowering the nose. Reversers applayed too early, also. The glide path was bad although it wasn't so windy.
How can you say thats a bad landing? You have no idea about the glidepath. You can not tell properly from this video anyway. Only if you have landed a Boeing 747 300 at Manchester then you will know. Also you can't even see wher the TDZ is so you have no idea if it was a long float down the runway or not. It was a smooth landing, the spoiler were armed, the reverse thrust came in quickly enough. I've been on many flights where the pilot doesnt use the reverse thrust till your about half way...
... until they were half way down the runway. They try not to use reverse thrust because it results in engine wear, so if they think they can suffice with only spoilers and wheel brakes then they do, but if they think that prehaps they misjudged their braking power, they apply reverse or Idle reverse thrust. Anyway, it was smooth, i assume it was centre line as there was little rudder movement. No one died. Good landing I say. The passengers would have been pleased in the end.

It's amazing to see how carefully and gently the captain managed to touch down on the second approach-
I know its reasonably easy in a GA aircraft, but I consider it exceptional work considering the bulk of the 747.

Looked to me that he had not captured the glide scope and had to perform a missed approach.
I have done it myself in days of yore.
