  • This was a major hit when I was in Ireland last. It took me the better part of a day, but I got the last 45 available in Dublin. I love Mary 'Black.

  • I love a good con-TROV-ersey. smile

Which is it? Irish or Scotish?

And who wrote, where and when?

    Just asking.

A beautiful, pure voice is beautiful and pure no matter

    who sings what.

Today there is just too much noise piled onto the voice,

which ought to be the primary thing heard, unless you're

a symphony orchestra, not a choir.

  • there are many lovely versons of this song - my vote goes to Mary

  • The Rose of Allendale" is an English song, with words by Charles Jeffreys and music by Sidney Nelson, composed in the 1840s. Because the song has been recorded by Paddy Reilly and Mary Black, many people mistakenly believe the song to be an Irish song. Sometimes it is also believed to be a Scottish song.

    .

  • @R3o3m3a3n3y Thanks for this information

  • i dont want to take anything from paddy reilly - but mary's version in my favourite - its probably my favourite mary black song

  • for some reason lida ronstreae is claining words.

  • I was always led to believe,as a little Irish boy many years ago, that it is a reference to Irish politician Charles Stewart Parnell(late 19th.Century).

  • What a Voice ......

    I Love Mary Black .

  • @breffnipark Nice song

  • Irish but willing to share with everyone. If written by or about Scotland or Northumbria all I can say is, thanks. Great song and voice.

  • great

  • I heard a quiz on my local radio some ago asking listener's to name as many Irish song's with "Rose" in the title. (ie, lovely rose of clare, rose of mooncoin ect) , the winner had "Allendale" in the list. Obviously the radio station did not do their home work.

  • lovely song

  • Obviously after c170 years it's hard to be sure but as someone with Northumbrian roots going back to c1675 and before it's good to think that Allendale in Northumberland is in fact the true location of this wonderful song - perhaps we'll never find out for certain but I'm happy to go with what machree01 has advised me.

  • This version is very good - much better than the copy singer Paddy Reilys - i still think Sean Cannon and The Dubliners is the best

  • Both versions are wonderful - it's a beautiful song. can you tell me where it relates to. We have an Allendale in Northumberland but the song is claimed as both Irish and Scots - I'd like to believe it's based on the Northumberland Allendale.

    Cheers

    John Jeffrey

  • @Blacksmiths1675 Hi John, it was written by Charles Jeffreys and the music by Sidney Nelson in the 1840s. It is a village in Northumberland.

  • @Blacksmiths1675 The song was written by two Englishmen. The earliest manuscript has the spelling Allandale, and that along with the "highland cot" in the lyric seems to suggest it is about one of the Scottish Allandales. The composers wrote other pseudo Scots songs - notably Mary of Argyl. However in the past people of the Northumbrian Dales were referred to as highlanders and Allendale has the spelling Allandale in some early documents. It could be about either! In truth we don't really know

  • Sheer beauty, lovely voice great rendition

  • Love it

  • crap

  • @TheCooldudeindahouse

have you no heart or soul in you!

  • She takes some beating! A clear and beautiful voice.

  • I wonder why this song was so popular in Ireland given there is no significant Irish attachment to it?

  • @phoenix1916 What I find really interesting is that this song pops up in American and English song books in the 1840's - shortly after its composition. It seems to have been a world wide instantaneous hit, even without the aid of youtube.

    Lewbook

    Lewbook

  • @lewbook maybe thats it then, cause 1847 was the irish famine over 1 million emmigrated to the USA, maybe they fell in with those from England and this song was transported home!?

  • Lovely version but my favorite is Derek McCormack and Barleycorn's.

  • So much enjoyed this beautiful song......thank you for sharing.......Barbara

  • Such a haunting voice. Foster and Allen have a nice version of this song too. Mary's version is very beautiful.

  • "I love the music! I love the singer but I cant stan the shit heads on youtube who think they own this."

  • i remember some 20 years ago, i was down so low, but this sweet voice helped me through the fire

  • simply superb!!!

  • mary saved my live 17 years ago. my father died and i thought i must die too. her music helped me to make my days. thx a lot for that mary. i love you.

  • I sure wouldn't want to say who sings this BEAUTFUL song better, Mary Black or Paddy Reily, .....both of them sang it WONDERFULLY....and they are two magnificent Irish artists.

  • NO, MATTER, MY FRIENDS , ; It is a beautuful a song, we all can relate !!! God Bless to all of all Lands !! & to to all

  • my favourite Mary Black song - and my favourite version of this song

  • Break the heart, it does.

  • Brings tears to my eyes, beauitful voice,,

  • Mary love your voice .

You are also one of the best.

  • Einfach wunderschön.....ein super Song....

  • what a song!- thought it was traditional- steel was weird at first, but I came around to like it quickly. beauty!

  • The Rose of Allandale is a Scotch (deliberate spelling it was good enough for my grandparents it's good enough for me). The Irish folk groups have done a superb job preserving folk music. However, just because it's sung by an Irish man/woman doesn't make it Irish.

  • I just thought so when I heard her singing 'my highland home'. That is something typically Scottish and I haven't heard it in Irish lyrics yet.

  • I am terribly patriotic, a born and breed Scots lass, and as much as it pains me to say this, it's actually originally sung by Sidney Nelson, about the Rose of Allendale, a Northumberland town, England. It is often confused with Alladale, Ross-shire in the Highlands of Scotland. (:

  • This is AWESOME!!

  • Lyrics by Charles Jeffreys & melody by Sidney Nelson. It was written in the 1840s, & was actually about a young woman from Allendale in Northumberland.

  • I´ve got only one thing to say

    Go mbeannai Dia Eire

    All the best

Bjarti- Faroe Islands from the North Atlantic

  • Does anyone know how old this song is and who composed it? Was it a poem that was set to music? By far the best version I've ever heard.

  • Gracias Mary Black por esta preciosa canción.

  • Such a beautiful song. I wish I could sing it.

  • ArkRed1, Agreed, the song is beautiful. To my great sorrow, I've been tone deaf all my life. I'd love to be able to sing this song... or any other. As it is I can't sing Mary Had A Little Lamb and stay in the same key all through it... :-))

  • wow!!! what a beautiful voice! I certainly agree with ArkRed her voice is angelic.

  • Must do a Nikora vid 2 this...x Heathers Dream Girl x

  • beautiful x Love this song and her voice. Trad at it's best x :D

  • Tremendous tune, Mary!

  • Absolutely beautiful singing....Mary Black can speak so much in her wonderful sounding voice. The desires and emotions of the song are truly conveyed by Mary.

  • Mary Black will fill your heart with love .

  • Absolutely beautiful song couldn't be sung better than by Mary Black.

  • you know this song reminds me of my grandad. it was his favourite song and was played at his funeral. everytime i listen to it, i get a warm feeling inside me and start crying.

  • One of her very first recordings ♥ *****

  • Angelic to say the least.

  • beautiful!!!

  • Mary Black can sing any song and I will still feel it in my soul

  • right up there with my most favourite songs of all time - gura mile maith agat mo chroi

  • Nice version, but the Corries version is unsurpassed in my opinion

  • I have to admit the scottish accent suits the song. I played a few more Corries songs and I am hooked - but my loyalty is still with Mary - i think it depends on who you first heard singing a particular song

  • Lovely version. When I first heard it I thought it was Rose of Avondale and was an Irish song, apparently Allendale is a village in Northumberland.

  • very pleasant rendition of a great song , but i think Paddy Reilly maybe edges it with his version

  • What about ye Mick, Paddy is a brilliant balladeer, and is great at singing The Rose of Allendale, but I still prefare Mary singing it. Thanks for the comment.

  • Her voice is stunning just like her,she sings from her heart, thanks so much for uploading and recommending this..X

  • @machree01 this version is very good - the best is Sean Cannon and the Dubliners - the worst i heard is Paddy Reillys version - he is singing it as he he is singing all his songs - no soul just something that must be done

  • @howdofolks Different people sing this song in different ways and they are all good!

  • @0886Damo , yeah fair play i do not disagree with you , its just my personal preference , i appreciate different artists interpretations of songs as much as the next person , Marys version here is beautiful but wee Paddy Reillys version is more to my taste

  • The most beautiful voice that ever came out of Ireland....By far....to me. I just can't think of any other way to put it. I wish Mary and De Danon would come back to the southeastern U.S for a tour.

  • Thanks Machree this is the best version by far, lovely singing.

  • The wonderfully talented Mary Black !
