"This Land Is Your Land" is one of the United States' most famous folk songs. Its lyrics were written by Woody Guthrie in 1940 based on an existing melody, in response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America", which Guthrie considered unrealistic and complacent. Tired of hearing Kate Smith sing it on the radio, he wrote a response originally called "God Blessed America for Me". Guthrie sometimes included more overtly political verses than appear in recordings or publications."
"There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me; Sign was painted, it said private property; But on the back side it didn't say nothing; That side was made for you and me"
This is the song that everyone should listen to when they think of immigration. I'm white and I have no means of discrimination tword anyone who wants to come live in this great country Because in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Like Woody said it best "This land is your land, this land is our land from California to the New York Island. From the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters... This land was made for you and me"-A true great American song writer. This song is the trueth for EVERYONE

It's a great riposte to the way America has been going since the Bush dynasty started selling it down the river. I'm not an American, but I sincerely hope, despite all odds, that the peeps of America will reclaim This Land for You and All of Me.
(I was going to say something rude about Bobby Weir's walk shorts, but that is too trifling - RIP Jerry and long live David and his Los Lobos)

This was in Foxboro I was lucky enough to be working for them. It was really an amazing day Jerry was his usual jovial self they jammed for quite awhile before they did the shoot. Great to see the clip it brought back great memories. Jerry was not only a tremendous player but a bright and loving soul. Unlike many other "superstars" he treated me and everyone else around him with kindness, man he made me laugh so hard and just loved to play on stage and off
This was Foxboro, I was lucky enough to be working for them as ground support for the helicopters. Taking them from the birds to their dressing rooms. I've worked for allot of "superstars" and Jerry unlike many Jerry treated me and everyone around him with kindness and comrade re. When I think of him I think of laughter and music his musical talent was matched with keen wit, man did he make me laugh

@NOLA907 : Well, yeah! I have a feeling what attracted me to the Dead & JGB was that his personality came through in everything he did, you can ususally catch his guitar laughing now and then. Seeing him in a small club this was even more apparent. We're fortunate to have been around in his time, and even more so that of any band, almost all of their musical output is still available. For free, in most cases, for now, anyway.
The newscaster makes it appear this is is a patriotic song. Wrong !! This was written as an anti-America, anti-govt protest song. Woody would cringe. Learn some history.
@cleartheroomband Actually, you have it all wrong-Woody was a patriot. Not a banner waving, flag worshiping patriot, but a true patriot. He never wrote an anti-American song. "This Land's" original title was "God Blessed America" -it was written as a response to Kate Smith's version of God Bless America, which was at the top of the charts at the time. His message was God didn't need to bless America, it was already blessed-hardly an anti-American sentiment!
backstage at sullivan stadium, Foxboro Mass. i was there for that show. Jerry and the guys and some really fine lsd made that an amazing show despite it being in the upper 90's when the show started. back in the end zone where we were sitting there was a firetruck hosing down the crowd because it was so damn hot. best show i saw of the more than 150 i saw between 81 and 95.
Wow, first time I ever saw this one. Awesome!! '89 was an excellent year for the boys. Summer tour was sweltering throughout. I saw them in Philly 5 days after this performance with Hornsby opening. If I remember correctly, Los Lobos opened some shows and Hornsby opened others, seemingly at random.
this could possibly be the coolest 3.5 minutes on you tube. I was up there for this stuff it was about 95 degrees in the shade but as usual los lobos as well as the boys played some killer sets that summer day.
This is a real treat! This performance was at Sullivan Stadium in Foxboro Mass. According to Deadbase, Los Lobos was scheduled to open for the Dead, but did not play. I wonder if there were other tunes played at this little jam session.
Hmmm this was my first dead show I ever went too and I seem to recall Los Lobos playing a nice, albeit short, opening set. I remember I was sweating my ass off on the floor during their set, it was so hot!
the grateful dead are like the water turned to wine, when people realize that they have been missing out on this music for so long, they wonder why it has been hidden from so many for so long.
Kind of makes me sentimental... See, there is no room for negativity here. Just the fact that these guys are in the same air-space singing this song is something that makes me proud to be an American.
Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Los Lobos sing "This Land is Your Land" behind the late great Foxboro Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, before the boys played their 7/2/89 show.

I saw JGB a lot in the late 70s and early 80s. Usually I was leaning on the stage where I could have messed with Jerry's shoelaces.
There were always twin cigs burning away as they jammed, John's and Jerry's,
Stuck between the strings up by the tuning nuts.
