Boy, it was sure different in the old days. Here we have Agamemnon's daughter about the set off on a trip with the Crown Prince of Crete... and carrying her own rather undistinguished luggage. Take heed Frau Obama.
The translation in english the info box is wrong! It should be: "If my heart (!) is (!) so close to shipwreck, for what cruel purpose is that wreck withheld."
@amongthegarbage Spot on! I thought I was the only one to object to what has become the established translation of these lines which are written in the present tense but are always rendered in the past. Obviously, translators insist that Idomeneo is referring to the external shipwreck, rather than to the internal one occurring in his heart. Isn't it possible that Varesco used the 'historical past' for a special rhetorical effect (ie to make Idomeneo re-live the shipwreck scene)?

I doubt someone who usually sings Turridu could handle the coloratura. But if you can, give it a try.

There are a LOT of black notes in this aria! It's pretty amazing how he handles them!
