I like Stephen King, even though I'm nearly immune to getting scared, as I grew up in a horror-lover type of family, but I always found it hard to get past his character dialogue. It always seemed unnatural to me. Anyway, I vote Salem's Lot as the top. Something about it I just really dig, and I'm not entirely sure what it is, even if the Shining was better written.
My favorite King novels are in this order. One The green mile. Two The dark tower series. Three Hearts in atlantis Four Salems Lot . I seen were nobody ranked Hearts in atlantis . For the people that has never read it i would highly recommend it. As for his short stories my favorites are The shawshank redemption. Dolans cadillac. Riding the bullet.
@ladyxxmacbeth Under The Dome would have been better if the time frame of it was a lot longer than a week. I failed to see how people could be that desperation only after a few days. Still it was a somewhat fast entertaining read for such a long novel
And by the way. Christine is so criminally underrated that I am personally thinking to do a list of great underrated works by King. Bachman Books, especially, the Long Walk are other underrated gems.
Eh, it is pretty tough when it comes to choose ten best books by the King, isn't it? You favor old-school King and I support this but IMHO Duma Key or Bag of Bones is much better than Cujo, and Under the Dome is a great return to the form. Anyway, if nothing else, IT should be the number one while the Shining is still a great contender. IT may be one of the best books I have read, not only out of the ones by King.
I'm only 13 so I'm just getting into him :P I started thinner but lost the book :'C then I tried IT but it was a bit too hard so I started the shining and its perfect ! :D
@tsphilly98 dude if u get into it at thirteen thats like the perfect age ive been into stephen king since i was seven and let me tell u every time i see one of his books its like when a girls goes shopping
Out of the books I've read so far, I'd say my top two favorites are Bag of Bones and IT. Such epic tales of tragedy. By the way, what is this song? It's very catchy hahaha.
I just bought Misery, Christine, and Cujo while Half Price books was having a sale. Which one should I read first? And please give your opinion based on the novel, not the movie. Thanks :)
Your top three are pretty interchangable. All depends on what interests you the most...psychological horror, good vs. evil, or childhood vs. the monster under the bed. If I had to choose one that was missing it would be Bag of Bones. And one IMO that didn't belong? I didn't think there was anything special about Cujo. It was pretty much straightforward with forgettable characters...
Your top 2 are great. IT and THE SHINING. NEEDFUL THINGS is also great. And if you haven't read his novella "THE LANGOLIERS" that you can find in one of his collections, I think 4 PAST MIDNIGHT, then you should, because that story is flat out amazing.
good books (some of them great) but what about his work post 1986? Bag of Bones is fantastic as is Gerald's Game, Hearts in Atlantis and many of the Dark Tower novels...
You got a good taste of books! But personly i think that it is little better then the shining, but we are al different right? Lame cover for the shining by the way, i was thinking about buying cujo, but the book only costs 3 cents, cujo arent bad right?
@lostpunkrock So you have read Pet Sematary? Do you think a 13 year old would be able to understand whats going on it the book? Or is it too confusing?
@Nanodae I didnt think it was confusing just silly. If you want a really good stephen king book for all ages get em talisman (was and still is my fav stephen king book)
The Gunslinger was EPIC. 'Salem's Lot was AWESOME I have not read Pet Sematary yet Misery was okay Haven't read Skeleton Crew Cujo was AMAZING! Carrie was RAWESOME! Haven't read The Stand Haven't read It The Shining was amazing!
Really , i havent read it but everytime i go to waterstones or something to buy another Stephen king book i always see it but never buy it ....i seen the movie didnt really like it ?
@becca0668 I didn't like the movie much. After reading a couple more of stephen king I realized it wasn't that scary (after reading IT and pet sematary) but the book was extremely well written. You'll enjoy it. The movie strays off from the book in a lot of ways, most of them if I mentioned it would just be a shitload of spoilers, but since you saw the movie first there will still be parts that will shock you
Great list. I have'nt got into the whole Dark Tower series yet,but otherwise I've read your list. The first King novel I ever read was Salem's Lot. The kid hovering outside the other kids window kept me from sleeping for a week. I've just purchased, but have yet to read, his newest,Under The Dome.
