I think that they took Shagrat's comment of "a starved frog" too seriously. He certainly isn't related to Hobbits. Anyway, this Gollum was great, not so creepy. He was even better in the Return of the King cartoon.
As a kid, this Gollum made me poop in my shorts,no joke,Return of the King version sucked. He is the ultimate version of creepy,sneaky-monster creeper riddle guy......my riddles sucked :(
@Foulfangs I watched this when I was like 4. The whole movie scarred the crap out of me, except the parts where Gandalf was around. I have it on videotape. No one even makes videotapes or VCRs anymore.
@SPARTAN9999999991 I know, just think of all the classics people miss cause no one makes them this day and age.....Ever hear of the Santa story where he fights satan,or the devil,or some evil bad dude? Can't for the life of me remember.....not even the villain.....I don't think the elves liked him at first.
@Foulfangs I have never heard of that. There's a small chance that I did but I would need more information about it to know. AAH! I just checked and someone threw out all my videotapes including the Hobbit. Even though they're not as old as the Hobbit i had things such as the original Pokemon, an episode of the orgianal You-Gi-Oh, a tape with a few episodes of Batman the Animated Series which was made in the early 90s, the old powerangers, Thomas the tank engine, Jurassic Park 3 and 2, ETC.
Indeed, although it was only the Wood-elves and not all Elves; Elrond looked all right. Of course Gollum, the Goblins, and the other evil creatures are supposed to look monstrous, so the look worked.
The acting is pretty random, much like they were just going for a 'scary' voice instead of actually thinking out the character, but in some respects this is really interesting.
If anything, it certainly shows a Gollum that's truly unhinged after centuries lived in isolation and corruption. Jackson's version was split, but visibly lucid in his malice.
It cannot be seen It cannot be felt Sometimes is heard Always is smelt It lies between cracks And under waists And in good taste, it lacks Beans comes first It follows after Ends life Starts laughter The answer is farts A FART...
god i miss hand drawn cartoons someone needs to pimpslap everyone in hollywood and tell them to stop being lazy and draw the damn cartoons again and stop relying on computer animation im so goddamned sick of computer animation
I wish he would've showed the end of this scene where Bilbo accidentally says "time", which is the answer to that last riddle, and Gollum just totally loses it because he wasn't really supposed to get it right.
With this Gollum voice and a mixture of this frog-like Gollum and the Peter Lorre CGI Gollum (which I am not a fan of) of LOTR, Gollum would be a fantastic, creepy character
This is how Gollum should have been! Andy Serkis did what he could do, but this Gollum is scary and croaky, not annoying and nasally. Andy Serkis' voice was just too high-pitched and didn't really seem menacing at all, more like a whiny crackhead.
@Igleh12 He's been tainted by about 600 years of dark magic from the ring and has lived underground for about the same time. He's been corrupted by his circumstance. You know, all the orcs in the stories were once elves too? (It's the nature of Morgoth's power)
@Warriorcats64 You gotta be kidding! Bakshi made hobbit look and sound like a pussy, not to mention his version sucked! Ranklin Bass made him insane and scary. !!
@MichaelGaribaldi Anything is better than the kiddie fest that is Rankin-Bass
Bakshi did all the battles right, actually managed to get Legolas to do something [rather than be unacknoweldged or be a pretty boy like Orlando Bloom]
And gimme a break no hobbits sounded more like what you've just described than the Hobbits of Return of the King. Bilbo looks a grandma not a kindly chap like in Bakshi
And Gollum had personality, duality. He's just a monster here
@Warriorcats64 In the Hobbit, Gollum is just a monster its not until the Lord of the Rings that he gets backstory and the duality aspect. Also in Bakshi he's just a clown no menance and barely any hint of duality, he's just saying the lines with nothing behind them. I watch both versions all the time as kid and even as kid I just thought the Bakshi version was an insult and made me laugh, Brother Theodore's voice scared me and captured that wrenched quality perfectly.
@1Mafioso4 i mean like, here u see him in his own lair and u see him before he's all "they stole it from us". so idk i think the new gollum would've been cool if he was in this scene too. and i actually thought u said "better" not "scarier" so yeh.. but the new gollum is def uglier and i think this one is more creepy but the new gollum is more like.. "holy shit" kind of scary.
@1Mafioso4 yeah, after 14 years of this movie, this Gollum still gives me a small shiver down my back every time I see him, he gives a truly intimidating feeling to him, unlike Jackson's version who just made me laugh...
That is a real mightmare creature typical for possesion of a item tuched by the darkess of magic and influce you over 500 years. I feel more respect to Gollum here and that voice is just to fitting. My sisster thought when she read the books that Gollum was a bulky big monster of sort. I love RIDDLES!!
@Ahturos The Tolkien family has been on record saying that this version of Gollum was more in liking to J.R.R. picture of the creature than Jackson's. For the very reason you indicated.
@SomeFluffer64 This is Japanese made cartoon. The Japanese have a monster cucumber frog creature that haunts caves and lakes. The bible says three frog-like demons in the last book.
Seriously, what ARE the chances of being caught in a cave deep in the earth and meeting a creature that just might be you great great great uncle a couple times removed?
Well... I like the movie gollum better since in the Lords of the ring movies, they say that gollum used to be a hobbit, and this gollum looks nothing like a hobbit.
God, my older brother had this movie. i watched it when i was a kid. Fucking disturbing!! Way more than any scene in the peter jackson films. now we joke about it. "It...likes...RIDDLES?!?!"
This Gollum is rather too large, isn't he? Gollum started out as a Hobbit-like creature, so he should be the same size as a Hobbit -- this Gollum seems considerably larger than Bilbo.
Wow. This scene was only the smallest bit unnerving in the book, just because of the dread of knowing that should our small hero make a slip-up in his riddles, he would die. But THIS... good lord, the animation and voice acting make for quite the disturbing creature.
bilbo could of just cut gollum with his sword then put on the ring and then gollum would think he was trying to escape then run to the exit and bilbo could follow instead of a hard game of riddles
@ZACKnirvana i only saw peter jackson's lotr when i was a kid, so that gollum scared me. this gollum looks like part frog/part drug addict/part flying squirrel
I'm somewhat drawn on the presentations of Gollum and Smaug the dragon in this film. The actual desighns dont come off well, Gollum looks like a frog and Smaug looks like a cat. I gotta say however that the voice acting is absolutely impecable on both counts.
True. Although in a way the animation kinda works for them in a way too. We never really had a big description of Gollum in the book. He was just said to be this dark slimy creepy thing with big luminous eyes and large hands and feet. It built on our imagination as to what he looked like and everyone had their own ideas. As for Smaug I guess since it was Japanese animation they tried making him a little bit of an Asian dragon as well as European. But the voices are what REALLY brought them out.
@mikedrummonds I agree 100%. The movie doesnt exactly go along with the book. likr for example bilbo is suppost to find the ring going down the tunnel, not when he gets there. Also, when he meets smaug hes also suppost to go in and out twice, not it happening all at once.
@mikedrummonds It's funny, when I was a kid I listened to the Hobbit on tape and 'frog' is exactly what I thought of when Gollum was described. I didn't know that Gollum was retroactively supposed to be a Hobbit mutated by powerful magic, only that he's dark, slimy, lived on an island in an underground lake and has large, lamp-like eyes and paddle-like feet. One of the orcs in LotR describes him as both spidery and frog-like too.
lol, i love that. only a hobbit would react that way when informed of such grave news. "My word, old bean! That's jolly bad form," might be another appropriate response.
....and polite enough to ask for "half" a moment, rather than a "whole" one; for that would be too provocative, despite the fact you were just threatened to be eaten!
I love this version of Gollum--the Andy Serkis one was really well done but this one is just freaking insane. When I saw this as a kid I was very disturbed. The music was great for this scene too.
What? No mention here of the great Mad Genius BROTHER THEODORE, the voice of Gollum??? I saw his one man show in NYC in the early 80's when he was a favorite guest of Letterman , and he was truly scary. (Lots of posts on YT, check out "BrotherTheodore-3" for example). he was one of the most underrated and underused talents of all time. Thank Elrond for whoever did the casting for this-- they couldn't have found a better Gollum!

....and polite enough to ask for "half" a moment, rather than a "whole" one; for that would be too provocative, despite the fact you were just threatened to be eaten!

I like these cartoons by Bakin waaayyy more than the Bakhshi ones. And I just like the voice actor for Bilbo a lot for some reason.

... It cannot be seen, cannot be felt, cannot be heard, cannot be smelled...
It lies behind stars - and under hills, and empty holeeeees... it fills...
It comes first and follows after... ends life... kills laughter...
The answer is dark... the dark....

I know this Gollum wasn't true to the book, but I just love him...Not as much as the Andy Circus version, but MUCH better then the Bakshi version

I thin gollum was more sympathetic in the LOTR, but he is much scarier in this version! Still I love them both!

The best version of gollum ever! A scary example of what might happen to someone who possess the ring for 500 years.
