Two favourite (and in my opinion the best) songwriters ever Morrissey and Peter Doherty. Morrissey will always be first for me but Pete is hugely talented and this cover is very good.
OK, so it's all about opinions. My opinion is that this is woeful. In fact it should be banned. Like listed buildings, there should be listed songs. This is an insult to the beauty of the original.
@Olson50 Its alright, you know this is just him recording this by himself on his computer so ofc this isn't going to be as good as the smiths, just didnt like your comment about smack
How to murder a top tune ! I think someone must have woke him up in the middle of the night and then asked him to sing this after hearing it once down a telephone!
I think this cover is beautiful.....In fact, I rarely like remakes of any song, but I like to listen to this more than the original, it doesnt have that .....produced deafness if you get my drift..... its not perfect, thats why I like it. And screw all you who can't respect someone else's opionion....people like u r the reason we are forced to listen to the crap that's on the radio nowadays
A very poor version of an excellent song. Tripe like this should never make it out of the studio - the Billy Bragg and Sandie Shaw covers show this to be the mess it is. Awful
But about the english-irish feud...I get the outsider's impression that every english person born in an industrial town is half irish or half scottish or half both...and still is english. Realize that there's something called emigration and that culture is acquired not inborn!
pete is very shy and lives in his mind i think. i dont know him but its pretty obvious that hes not what the papers make him out to be. hes a genious at the end of the day name me a great musician that didnt take drugs? john lennon, keith richards, bob dylon...could go on forever
@frenchielcfc Morrissey never did. Morrissey didn't even smoke. Pete's for to weak to think for himself, he just follows as Carl says and Carl even wrote a song about that part of his nature. So, no. Not every great artist took drugs. Morrissey for one, it doesn't make you any better.
I also see a lot of parallels between moz and pete. both appeal to people who feel isolated and maladjusted. And they both seem to be either obsessed-over or utterly despised. they've really drawn some ire over the years but their music means so much to the fans.

this fuckin' junkie probably doesn't even know anymore he ever covered this beautiful song and fucked it up completely. others would die of shame for this singing. what cruelty can anyone do to this smiths' gem...?
You paddies always try to do that, whenever some famous Englishman has some Irish ancestory you claim their Irish.
If Morrissey and Pete Doherty were just normal fellas who worked in Asda and said they had Irish ancestory you would call them "Plastic Paddies" quicker than you could say Potatoes.
Yes but I have Irish blood, it is almost impossible to find somebody with 100% pure Anglo-saxon blood, most English people do have some celtic ancestory.
My point is that Morrissey himself brings up his Irish roots(were both his parents not from Dublin?) without any Irish people having to. And he returned to live there for a period about 10 years ago I think. He reinforces his Irishness with his spiteful words for Oliver Cromwell. I doubt anyone who considers themselves 100% English has such hatred for Cromwell.
@mrfrankhill Couldn't think you've followed Morrissey's career that closely? Seriously name any self respecting Southern Irish man that would wrap himself in a Union Jack flag? Morrissey is always lamenting the loss of English and British identity - would an Irishman. He lived in Rome too - does that make him Italian? His culture, his lyrics and his actions all point to his Englishness and it does not take a genius to work that out!!
@Morrisseyisdead Tis true lol, works both ways though..Totally off subject here but the opposite way round is how the English are forever trying to claim Andy Murray as the "New British Hope"..Iv'e even heard him been called English a few times no matter how many times he says he's TOTALLY Scottish and is doing it for Scotland...If Murray was a pile of shitte he soon be "Scottish" again not British lol
@Morrisseyisdead im Irish and i dont know who your talking about. I dont think anyone said morrissey is irish and you could have gotten your point across without being racist, i thought the potatoes remark was a bit offensive considering during the famine your ever so giving queen came over the sea, he presence supposed to lift the irish peoples spirits when the reality is that it the money used to bring her fat english ass over could have fed alot of starving irish.
i surprising love this version, partially because of the song and also because pete's got a similar outlook on life to moz. almost, just not as, good as the original.
oh well, i didnt use to like pete doherty, but if he covers the smiths (and this song especially which is my fav of them) then i have to change my mind :)

Sure but I was just making the point that Irish people are subjective, as in they only consider people Irish who are famous.
Of course Morrissey and Pete have Irish ancestory, I do too, but to say that they are IRISH people is wrong.

Fair enough, it works both ways though...

the chords used are D A and G.
it´s like: D A D A
GA
GD
it´s not that hard when you know the chords.
Almost same as bollywood to battersea
IAMOHSOGREAT 3 years ago
In the original recording (The Smiths) there's also an Bm in the main riff.
D A
DD
D A
G D A Bm (that's the single notes part).
And the bridge is another minor chord, Em I believe.
