@blaumausfrau Actually, they fly higher than commercial planes, and higher than most combat jet's operational ceiling. Not all the time, but for record attempts, and utilizing a very powerful phenomena known as Wave lift. Look it up :)
@janrusgo You know the little annoying advertisements at the bottom of the video? Well it says the song name and artist, RIGHT ON IT! =P It's Fly Away by Lenny Kravitz
@Scheissdirindiebux you can fly anywhere as long as you meet the airspace requirments. so you cannot fly above 180. to do so u must be able to have constant control of altitude and speed.
@addeffects It doesnt matter if its allowed or not. No one really knows if its allowed without artificial horizon. I dont have one in my Discus CS but you always see the ground doesnt matter how high you are in the cloud, so you cant get disorientated
@DummyD1 I'm a pilot on the Grob Vigilant Military Motor Glider at RAF Cosford, we never use our artificial horizon anyway we fly by attitude which brings our speed as we want it should we have the correct rpm but yeah I flew a K 21(I think) conventional glider a few weeks back and I don't think that had one either, I found it extremely fun and it was very different from the Vigilant because we fly it almost like a light powered aircraft anyway. They had a few discus's where I was, they're nice
Lol, sorry about me being stubborn on the last comment ! You gain the height by going in a themal .... then do you see ... they go just little bit higher, then drop ? thats in the wave lol ! :) thats why they're not circling when they're in the " Thermal"
I'm 19 and I am going for my commercial pilot license. I'm glad to hear all of you young(er) soaring fanatics being so enthusiastic about the sport. It still amazes me that a plane can gain altitude without an engine!
lol, sry,my mistake,i thought you re going to make your atpl,if you say in germany sth. about commercial pilot license, everybody thinks you will work for lufthansa...
what are you able to do with a commercial glider license?
i think it must be hard to soar in australia, because of the hot weather,so the differnce of the temperature isn't that big like in europe, and the air climbs less fast
Yes. Trust me, I'm a Glider pilot. We have 3 ways to lift our plane: Thermal, Ridge and wave lifting. Thermal is under cumulus and wave lifting is the most higher lifting.
Accually, I'm not a glider pilot yet... But we had several tests to become one, and I past them all, so I can start my lessons at the summer... But It's quiet annoying, having al those tests and theoretical lessons, whitout being able to say you're a pilot XP
man i went on a gliding camp with my aviation class and DAMMM it was the best experiance of my life. its all good fun. i defiantly recomend it for any1
Can I ask please? When returing to earth, will the pressure cause my ears problems lol? Are they pressurised cabins, because it looks as if your like 7000 feet high?
Non-pressurised. You have take oxygen canisters up to go past ~12,000ft when the air gets thin. It's advisable to take thin gloves if you're planning on going past 5,000ft in winter or you can't feel the stick!
Cool, thanks alot =]=. Erm, I have been flying with the RAF as im in aircadets, and the Grob Tutor goes to 3000 ft. When were on our decent ny ears really started to hurt, will going even higher be worse?
I've never had that problem. I just swallow and the pressure equalises, but I imagine it would get worse the greater the pressure variation. A decent soaring day will see you fluctuate between 2,000 and 7,000ft as a matter of course during flight (riding the thermals up and gliding back down). I think the British altitude record is ~40,000ft riding wave over Scotland :D

waves in the alps, ridge lifting near some mountains and thermals nearly everwhere,

my personal best is 8200 MSL.
