The triceps tendons are going to be fried going that far back behind the head. I would bet my next paycheck a great deal of soreness he feels is connective tissue and inflammation, not muscle. The reason so many modern day bodybuilders rely on constant tension and what looks like partial reps by not locking out etc is to avoid injury and make sure the stress is through the muscle. Cutler and Coleman both train like that. I'm not just trying to act like a know it all.
It is a good exercise, it could be better with someone sitting on one end of the bench to stabilize the bench, and another partner pressing the middle of the back so you can remain still, that is how i do it.
@Yaqidh Absolutely no need to have someone sitting on the bench-if you've ever done this exercise you'd know that most of your weight is on the bench where the elbows are touching.
This is a superior triceps developer, far better than close grip benches or dips for the long head which is the largest part of the tris. Compounds are often overhyped while exercises like this are virtually unknown. Compounds are good for the (side) medial/lateral aresa of the tris.
The only things I'd suggest to do differently from what he's doing-cable should ideally be about 5 feet from the floor, which is not the case there. Also, elbows should be on the bench.
Where does Larry Scott find his fountain of youth. I have seen recent photos of him where he still looks younger than Arnold. As early as 1962 Mr. Scott posed nude in the Colorado Rockies for photographer Guildof Denver and excited all the gay men of America no doubt -- yet hs is a conservative Mormon with a wife and huge family.
@Biggmofo LOL "looks awkward" tells me you have a closed mind to arguably the best triceps developer there is. Free your mind, lose your negativity and TRY it before judging.
@hardcorehouse LoL I was just being silly, because at the end he was humping the bench... For me using heavy (close grip) benches and dips is what gives me the right stimulation (soreness like some people call it) followed by isolation like triceps extension with cables, barbells or dumbells. So there no need to lecture me...and hey...NO NEGATIVITY!!
Que se pretende con esas forzadas al final??? una lesión de triceps por hiperextención???? me parece muy rebuscado el ángulo... creo que era suficiente con que el antebrazo llegara a un ángulo de 90° repecto del húmero..
Never use bodybuilding techniques from pre-70's. They didnt have the knowledge then.Look at this crap exercise, the chair moves n gets in the way and is more effective if you stand up and what the fuck are those thrusting movements at the end?I follow coleman and cutlers technique thats y im 130kg 13%bf and only 23.
never use bodybuilding techniques before the 70's!!! this is utter shit....more effective doing the same technique but standing up. stupid thrusting movements at the end are really balls.
fuss400 is right! this was Vince's exercise - a classic. + the guy in the vid. is not exactly doin this right, you need a special small 'v' bench, where your head goes down lower than your elbows and the rope has to be about 13 ft long and cable@ 5-6ft high.
*Jeromejeronimo* is also correct. The bar is from L.Scott. Larry took express permission form Vince to refine the specific equip. needed for this exercise.
@Ajeebhai1 Very much splitting hairs there, this is the essential exercise even if it's not exactly as done in Vince's Gym. Too bad it never caught on in gyms the way the preacher bench did it's a great exercise.
I always gauge the effectiveness of any given exercise on how much muscle soreness you experience the following day so when i do close grip benches or dips i experience no soreness yet when i do lying extensions or this ex. I'm sore for days, makes me feel the former are inferior exercises but do them anyway because they're supposed to be the basics. anyone else the same?
@MrBravo1999 Entirely agree, soreness and where the soreness is are huge clues to effectiveness. Extensions are far superior to compounds for hitting the larger long head of the triceps. Compounds make sense for hitting the other areas-the lateral/medial (side) of the tris instead so they're a perfect complement. Myself I never liked close grip benches or dips, get a lot more on the lateral/medial heads using either a dip machine or doing bench dips after extensions for the long head.
to try and replicate this move.. I use rope pulley on lat pulldown machine.. turn my back to the machine, place one knee on sitting pad, lean forward (like superman/diagonally) and press out.. it hits the long head, then i do pushdowns, feels gr8. nice video :)
I really wanted to do this ex. but it requires twin-paddle bench and then the machine which is 5' feet tall with long cable,it seem best ex. for tri's.There are alternative but I wanted to do it perfectly with right equipments.
Larry Scott loves these. He says it is the best builder of the long head of the tricep which is where most tricep size comes from. Hard to find this type of a set up in gyms anymore so most of us will have to improvise.
@PumaTomten Close grips and dips are very good but don't hit the same parts of the tris at all and should be done in addition to some sort of extension exercise like this.
@hardcorehouse yeah i always do some extension exercise for triceps with one or two dropsets. but this is overrated, if u stand on your knees and do extensions behind your head u get more weights, or just some ez-press extensions. More weights n good form = better results

if i dont have a bench can i use one of those big gym balls

I would not say it is the best solution as you need stability to be strong but I guess this is possible

Why you hump the bench? What muscle does that build?

Vince Gironda had this apparatus at Vince's Gym where Larry Scott was trained by the Great One himself.

It is easy to induce soreness with stretching exercises. But this kind of soreness is not the most productive in terms of growth
