A few days ago i watched 1960s movie "Golden Swallow" by Chang Cheh, starring Lo Lieh, Cheng Pei Pei and Wang Yu... "House of flying daggers" seemst to me like a remake of that one...
This is a great film Ziyi Zhang is fantastic,disappointed with the Directors comment that in order for europeans to see the difference between the two men at the start of the film he had one eating peanuts he thinks we see these people as all looking the same... a stupid comment.

Just the one of the best marshal arts movies of the world. Seen it when it comes out in cheniese and after in english then i see it ever month one time. Just love it.
I absolutely detest the special effects with the speeding arrows, bouncing peanut with the drums, and the walnut being stuck onto the bamboo. These were great ideas to show how skillful the characters are, but it is the way that they were portrayed that irritated me. Not the CSI type of special effects please! It really didn't fit well with the rest of the movie's choreography, which has more of a classic Chinese brush painting style. It ruined the whole movie!

I think the movie has more potential that what has been done to it. Even as a Chinese who has been used to martial arts movies, the choreography still looked awesome to me, probably the best I've ever seen (also "Hero"). The actors and actress are all very charismatic, and I think they did a great job here. But I thought the director should allow more grounds for them to cover, to introduce audiences with more depth to the characters, instead of the special effects.

I love the Chinese language, and I have watched the subbed version for years. Then I watched the dubbed version and realized that they got more than half of the lines wrong. So I just watch the original. It's better that way. This is my favourite Chinese movie.
@nubakos And the reason why they don't speak in the preview, is because well... they would not like to read subtitles, and hear the Chinese language. So that's why they make them silent, but put action for the preview.
@nubakos I got the blu-ray version of this movie and the only language spoken is Mandarin DTS-HD MA 5.1, there are no other spoken languages on it so i don't know if it is also available in a dub version with other languages. Original language sounds very beautiful but that's my opinion.

@FightsRightsAlways Actually she wasn't in curse of the golden flower. That was Gong Li - China's most respected actress. As much as I love Ziyi Zhang, there aren't many asian actresses that appeal greatly to the west compared to her. I do understand your point though - I would like to see a lot more new talent around. Though Ziyi Zhang has a lot of talent as a serious actress and an action actress.

@FightsRightsAlways Yeah I do agree with you in some ways. I think it is a struggle for a lot of asian actors to make it big in the west, and Ziyi Zhang has just excelled in the martial arts genre. Also the director of this movie has used her in some of his past films - The Road Home (Ziyi Zhang's first film) and Hero, so he was obviously capitalising on her popularity as well as this genre in the west; hence it is less of a gamble.

@FightsRightsAlways It's not that Ziyi Zhang has monopolized the movie market. It is simply because she already has an established market in the west. So, the western cinema business tend to pick and choose her movies to be screened. There are a lot of big budget, awesome Chinese movies made by well known directors each year, without her and other actors well known to the west (like Tony Leung， Jet Li and Jackie Chan). They just didn't get the chance to be screened outside the Asian market.
Ziyi Zhang has the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen. They seriously look like pools of water when I was watching Memoirs of a Geisha. And she's amazing with her in depth acting, love it
Some people can't recognize a good film when they see one.The plot has nothing to do with it, it could be the most ridiculous plot in th world, but with a good director and fantastic actors they could make into a brilliant movie.

This movie was also and its gorgeous, great story, visually stunning and a must see for fans of movie. Please watch with subtitles because I believe dubbing takes something away from movies.
@CaramelDancen They are not an actual trilogy, but it is the second of the three martial arts/wuxia films directed by Zhang Yimou. That's why they are called a trilogy, allthough their plots aren't related. The first movie was "Hero" (my personal favourite), and the third and last movie was "Curse Of The Golden Flower".
@aeyara Well, it's not exactly the same, but the beginning sounds quite like the second half of "The Peonyhouse", No.4 on the OST CD. The second half reminds a bit one part of the next track, "The Battle In The Forest", but not that much.
Don't believe the hype, this is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, a 6 year old child could have come up with a better plot and told a more interesting story.

@killlingFreak It was released in ca. 40 countries in the cinema, however it took two years for some to screen it (India was the last, I think). But the movie itself is quite well known outside of China as well, so I'm pretty sure that the DVD was realeased in even more countries.
Every time I watch this movie, I inconsolably cry like a little bitch and end up with tears and snot running down my face. I feel like such a loser, but I cry a LOT at the end of the movie. When the screen just fades out and the song starts, forget it, I fucking DIE. I don't cry as much as I do when I watch Grave of the Fireflies, though. ALMOST as much as I cried at the end of Star Trek II (you can laugh).
So other movies are more real then? Spiderman? the Hulk? So they put something in the movie that couldn't happen in real life. Not the first time, not the last time. Deal with it.

I've never seen this movie in my entire life. I just heard a song from the movie a few years back and tried to find it again. And please explain how it was stupid? Please do. I was stating the obvious, and pointing out a fault that you stated. Nothing more. Quit trying to defend the pride you did not have to begin with, and actually see what I'm saying.
It's not supposed to be believable. It's a story much like any other, and this particular story (and similar stories) use ideas from Asian philosophy (becoming one with the sword, and becoming one with the universe). It may be difficult to appreciate because we are so used to watching movies based on more "western" ideas.
I love how they describe this movie as "sublime", which means supreme or outstanding, impressive as of grandeus or power. I can't wait to see this movie.

@FightsRightsAlways I'm sure they are always looking for new talent. But I guess in the end films are also made to make money - so you either take the risk or go with what is hot out there. But I certainly hope a lot of new asian actors are recognised in the west as well for their talent.

@FightsRightsAlways It's not that Ziyi Zhang has monopolized the movie market. It is simply because she already has an established market in the west. So, the western cinema business tend to pick and choose her movies to be screened. There are a lot of big budget, awesome Chinese movies made by well known directors each year, without her and other actors well known to the west (like Tony Leung， Jet Li and Jackie Chan). They just didn't get the chance to be screened outside the Asian market.

Ziyi Zhang has the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen. They seriously look like pools of water when I was watching Memoirs of a Geisha. And she's amazing with her in depth acting, love it

Some people can't recognize a good film when they see one.The plot has nothing to do with it, it could be the most ridiculous plot in th world, but with a good director and fantastic actors they could make into a brilliant movie.

This movie was also and its gorgeous, great story, visually stunning and a must see for fans of movie. Please watch with subtitles because I believe dubbing takes something away from movies.

@CaramelDancen They are not an actual trilogy, but it is the second of the three martial arts/wuxia films directed by Zhang Yimou. That's why they are called a trilogy, allthough their plots aren't related. The first movie was "Hero" (my personal favourite), and the third and last movie was "Curse Of The Golden Flower".

@aeyara Well, it's not exactly the same, but the beginning sounds quite like the second half of "The Peonyhouse", No.4 on the OST CD. The second half reminds a bit one part of the next track, "The Battle In The Forest", but not that much.

THIS MOVE IS TERRIBLE.
Don't believe the hype, this is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, a 6 year old child could have come up with a better plot and told a more interesting story.
This is nothing like crouching tiger hidden dragon, this move is really really really bad. Avoid at all costs.

@killlingFreak It was released in ca. 40 countries in the cinema, however it took two years for some to screen it (India was the last, I think). But the movie itself is quite well known outside of China as well, so I'm pretty sure that the DVD was realeased in even more countries.

Every time I watch this movie, I inconsolably cry like a little bitch and end up with tears and snot running down my face. I feel like such a loser, but I cry a LOT at the end of the movie. When the screen just fades out and the song starts, forget it, I fucking DIE. I don't cry as much as I do when I watch Grave of the Fireflies, though. ALMOST as much as I cried at the end of Star Trek II (you can laugh).

Because you specifically set aside 'Asian fighting movies' which, you said they were so fake. But, what movie isn't besides 'March of the Penguins.' I was just trying to point out the stupidity in the comment itself. You excluded a genre in itself. Which means you're comparing it to movies in a whole. Then the conclusion being 'are so fake'. I've never seen this movie in my entire life. I just heard a song from the movie a few years back and tried to find it again. And please explain how it was stupid? Please do. I was stating the obvious, and pointing out a fault that you stated. Nothing more. Quit trying to defend the pride you did not have to begin with, and actually see what I'm saying.

It's not supposed to be believable. It's a story much like any other, and this particular story (and similar stories) use ideas from Asian philosophy (becoming one with the sword, and becoming one with the universe). It may be difficult to appreciate because we are so used to watching movies based on more "western" ideas.
