Clapton did, indeed, play a Stratocaster but surf gutiar king, Dick Dale, got the bonus points for playing his Stratocaster upside down & backwards, changing chords "on the fly." Leo Fender was so blown away with what Dale could do with the Stratocaster, playing from the left side of the strings, he worked with Lansing to create a whole new 15 inch speaker and amp (the "Showman" amp which ran at 100-180 watts)
