truth to tell...Arkansas farm gal...my pa (grandfather) used a horse or mule for plowing..sometimes he used a double team..two horses, etc,
Gee means turn right and Haw means turn left....both hands are on plow handles and straps are tied around the persons waist..if he has to take a hand off the plow he reaches to the strap lines to turn right or left. Another thing You cannot plow backwards! ~Rita
Guess you guys don't plow much - it's important to keep both hands on the plow, so your mules have to be trained to turn right when you say "gee", and left when you say "haw".
Haw is for forward and Gee is for backwards, in horse talk

Those commands are the same with a sled dog team. :)

Yee and Haw refer to what you what tell the mule pulling the wagon. You'd yell Yee for Left and Haw for Right.

oh really? didn't know that...
Well, here in Texas, we yell "yee-haw" a lot, but that's really more just from tradition...
RotogenRay 4 years ago
@jnizny The word is "gee," not "yee." Gee means go right and haw means go left.

Isn't it 'Gee', and not 'Yee'? It's still a good song. Thanks!
