Vietnam invaded laos once in 1483. Thats because our king sent their king elephant poop. In 1698 after king souriyavongsa passed, Lao seperated to 3 kingdoms. That shows the weakness to our neighbor Thai Siam. All three kingdoms became thai colonies in 1779-1893. We never got along always fighting among our selves, until today. 300 years we never learned our lesson. Im tired of being the underdog.

I have travelled in Laos,Cambodia and Isaan,I even have a Isaan(Thai/Lao)girlfriend.despite all discussions,I think Southern Lao,Isaan people,and north Cambodian are the same people,they look the same,but have different passports,only because of history and artificial borders.(My Isaan girlfriend has family in Laos and Cambodia,all short,dark,bigger eyes then the Thai,some speak Lao(Paksé,Savanakhet),some Isaan Thai(around Ubon),some Khmer,(in Surin,Sisaket,Buriram),but all a happy family.

All we can do now as Lao people is to be successful do the right thing. It is sad that it did happen and we weren't alive then, we can't control what happened. We can only control the present. Be a great example, as Lao people to the world so that our culture, our people can be recognized for positive things. There r so many negative conotations towards our people, it's up to us to change that.

don't be serious, friend. it was just a part of history. history is for learning, not for angry. why i say this? because any land on earth was not offered to anyone or any country. our kings fought for more larger land as same as burmese and siamese. do you know khmers have been tought a lot about their land in the past on khmer empire and they always say they lost most land of indochina. so we must be calm and do our best to improve our country. past just past, do the present for better.

The founder of Lao Lanxang was the son-in-law of the Khmer king. The first Queen of Lao Lanxang was a Khmer princess. Lao and Khmer are good friends.

HappyKhmer: this is very true and all Lao will tell you that you are correct. The diff between how we feel is that we have always credit the Khmer for helping us in that era. With our relations the Khmer help build us willingly. Very diff from our other neighbors that try to take things without giving credit to the origin. Khmer Angkor already collapsed and broken. Chenla Land and Chenla Water were fighting among themselves and occupied up to modern Champasack region. Even in Chinese history it was dubbed as the collapsing kingdom.

When Chao Fa Ngum and his dad were exiled(some say they went to study). Khmer King took the opportunity to take them in. They form an alliance and when Chao Fa was old enough he return with and army to create Lan Xang. That's why Lao and Khmer never had war.
This peace between Khmer and Lao, may have contributed to the friction between Thai and Lao.

I love our culture and our people. The arrogant of those in charge is our main problem. How can you govern a country when your government is a puppet of Chinese and Vietnamese. Things that turn me off is when a Laotian government is willing to sell land to other nationalities but refused to sell land to the Laotian living in other countries. This is a new Lao generation, we don't take shit from anyone. We understand that our parent teaching is good to respect others but it is no place in this dog eat dog world. I did exercise my parent teaching in my work place but gave impression to the other cultures I was weak. I was not weak but I have to respect my parent teaching to respect my boss and co-worker. khmer did have an Empire in southeast Asia untill the Lao and Thai invaded them from China, along with the Burmese and Viets who all had a fair share of it.
