@97Wendel The above video is for Vegas Pro. The mask option is not available in Sony Movie Studio. To do the same thing in Movie Studio, use the cookie cutter effect.
Does this process also work for video? (For example, if you wanted to give a character from a TV show your voice, but have their mouth move at the same time that you speak.) Or is it a different process entirely?
@BirdieGoBoom You could use this same process for video. Just record the audio track first, and put it on the timeline. Then adjust the mouth movement to match the audio.
Hi Bill, how do i mask out two portions of the same video at the same time....... do i need multiple copies of the video track & anchor each one accordingly? thanks.
@DanielCaswell75 With Movie Studio you have to use a different technique. Use the cookie cutter instead of a mask. I show this on my '101 Tips & Tricks with Movie Studio' DVD.
Hey, I have a problem with masking. I mean, the masking is perfect but when I put a clip under the masked one, the video would not show the second clip (the one that is not masked). Could you please help me? :(
@cheema728 Sony Vegas Pro costs over $500, offers unlimited audio and video tracks, and includes masking and other advanced video effects. Sony Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 has the look and layout of Vegas Pro, has about 90% of the same effects, has a limit of 10 audio and 10 video tracks, and costs under $100.
im using vegas pro 9 and it wont let me put jpg images on my timeline is just has a O with a dash through it, but if i convert them to .gif it works, any way i can fix this it is really annoying
same here!!!! i can move it left to right but not up not down its lam-lo dude after effects is so much eaiser but the thing is adobe after effects is like laggy
I tried this in my sony vegas movie studio platinum and when I click event pan/crop under position there is no mask button, how do I get it? please help!
hey thanks for sharing this with us, and i got an question.. is it only possible with photo's or also with videos? as example i play a game, and i want my characters mouth to move, cause he got hes mouth closed, is it possible to record the vid, and make hes mouth move in SV pro ?
It probably would work in Vegas Movie Studio using a cookie cutter; but it wouldn't be as percise. That's why I upgraded to Pro, I wanted to be able to do masking. Thanks for the great tip.
Clear and excellent demonstration. The effect is primitive compared to professional animation, but it is effective for YT. Since I own a Sony miniDVD camera, I wonder if Vegas is the best edit program. Suggestions?
I'd have to agree on that one. It is far better than Windows Movie Maker, less complex but has more effects than Adobe Premiere, and is far better in almost every way than Pinnacle Studio 12 besides capturing, which still isn't that bad on Vegas.
I have had the Vegas Movie Studio 8 Platinum edition for over a year now, and thanks to recently discovering your videos, I am finally getting away from the basics and understanding some of the cool features. I would like to know if I would need to upgrade to Movie Studio 9 Pro to play around with the masking effects, such as in this clip. Or, is an upgrade going to make much of a difference from what I presently have ? ....thanks for your vids ! Your help is appreciated.
Thank you ! If I purchased either of these programs, would it work separately from my Vegas Movie Studio 8.0 Platinum program. Or, which is the best route to take for an upgrade. Thanks again Mr. Meyers ! Once again, your videos are answering the majority of my uncertainties of video editing.
i put the mask on a photo of 5 seconds long, but now i want that the same photo is long 1 minute. how can i do, im reallly lazy to make copy paste the mask for 1 minute. is a simple way to do it? i tried to make the photos longer to 1 minute but the mask moves only for 5 seconds and then the image is static
Thanks..for the help. Seriously I was gonna buy the Adobe ImageReady for only moving the stupid mouth. It's great, buying the Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 worth it, because of your great big help. Thanks very much.
Yeah, you can only do masking in Vegas pro. I just started learning how use masking and I'm loving it already. I figured out how to make my hand look like its passing through a wall/door. check out my videos to see the test if interested.
Wait...what do you mean by flexible masking?
(what you said below)
droctogonapus1223 1 month ago
@droctogonapus1223 Flexible masking = draw a freehand mask around any object - not just limited to square, rectangle, oval
guerillabill 1 month ago
sorry to ask again but im going to get the production suite instead so does that have mask?
droctogonapus1223 1 month ago
@droctogonapus1223 No the production suite doesn't have flexible masking. Only Vegas Pro has it.
guerillabill 1 month ago
Is the 90 $ one pro?
droctogonapus1223 2 months ago
@droctogonapus1223 No, Vegas Pro is $500. Vegas Movie Studio Platinum has about 95% of the features of Pro, but costs less than $60 at Amazon.

If you got the error message in Sony Vegas or Movie Studio, you need to reinstall the program. But first, do a virus scan.
And make sure you have at least 2 gig of ram in XP, 4 Gig in Vista.

There is not much difference between Platinum 8 and Platinum 9.
You won't find the masking ability as shown above in any version of Movie Studio, but will find it in Vegas 7 and Vegas 8.
guerillabill 3 years ago

Vegas 7 and Vegas 8 install as separate programs, and will not affect the operation of any other program, including sony movie studio.
You can find Vegas 8 Pro for $129 from B & H Photo - item SOVP8Q
That's the best price going from a legit seller.
The $129 version will not include DVD Architect, but since you already have DVD Architect with Sony Movie Studio, you won't need it.
