  • Wait...what do you mean by flexible masking?

    (what you said below)

  • @droctogonapus1223 Flexible masking = draw a freehand mask around any object - not just limited to square, rectangle, oval

  • sorry to ask again but im going to get the production suite instead so does that have mask?

  • @droctogonapus1223 No the production suite doesn't have flexible masking. Only Vegas Pro has it.

  • Is the 90 $ one pro?

  • @droctogonapus1223 No, Vegas Pro is $500. Vegas Movie Studio Platinum has about 95% of the features of Pro, but costs less than $60 at Amazon.

  • Great video, thank. It was like Al Gore was telling it to me.

  • great video. thank you

  • When i go into the event pan crop, there is no where to click to mask the picture

  • @97Wendel The above video is for Vegas Pro. The mask option is not available in Sony Movie Studio. To do the same thing in Movie Studio, use the cookie cutter effect.

  • I made my dog talk :P

  • Does this process also work for video? (For example, if you wanted to give a character from a TV show your voice, but have their mouth move at the same time that you speak.) Or is it a different process entirely?

  • @BirdieGoBoom You could use this same process for video. Just record the audio track first, and put it on the timeline. Then adjust the mouth movement to match the audio.

  • @guerillabill Thank you!

  • Does this picture HAVE to have the mouth open of closed??

  • @Sharkita2 It's easier if you start with a photo with the mouth open.

  • Dose Vegas Movie studio HD Platinum 10.0 got the Mask too?

  • @ShibaTV No version or Sony Vegas Movie Studio has the masking tool. But all versions of Vegas Pro do.

The lack of a mask tool is one of the few differences between Vegas Pro and Sony Vegas Movie Studio.

  • @Dannyboy0346 You can use any image you want.

  • @Dannyboy0346 Yes, you can do the moving mouth effect in Sony Vegas Pro 9.

  • Hi Bill, how do i mask out two portions of the same video at the same time....... do i need multiple copies of the video track & anchor each one accordingly? thanks.

  • @DanielCaswell75 With Movie Studio you have to use a different technique. Use the cookie cutter instead of a mask. I show this on my '101 Tips & Tricks with Movie Studio' DVD.

  • Use the cookie cutter if you dont have pro and just shape it around the mouth

  • Could you draw green all around the mouth in paint and use chroma key and then move it?

  • @JklStudiosAwesome That might work

  • Can you do this in Movie Studio??

  • @livlaughloveanime Yes, you can do this in Sony Movie Studio.

  • @YummiceCreamm It is easier if you can find a photo of them with their mouth open.

  • i havent got mask to check ..

  • @mw43al Mask is available in Sony Vegas Pro only, not any version of Sony Movie Studio

  • Hey, I have a problem with masking. I mean, the masking is perfect but when I put a clip under the masked one, the video would not show the second clip (the one that is not masked). Could you please help me? :(

    Thanks.

  • @SparklingCupcakez key out the black behind the mask, that might work.

  • LOLZ IT LOOKS FUNNY~!

  • excelent tutorial as always guerillabill

  • I am using adobe programs but I got the point. Thank you a lot :)

  • you sound like Gore when you said "extemely easy to do"

  • I wish you would do this tutorial for sony vegas pro 9.0 its much different

  • @Musicmaker805 Actually, there is no difference between Vegas Pro 8 & 9 techniques to create the above effect.

Vegas Pro 8 & 9 are essentially identical except for the default screen layout and window color.

  • @guerillabill i do have 9 pro version but i cant find the mask option from the Crop window (bottom left).. any ideas sir? love you videos

    Cheers

  • @tulaconalas The mask option timeline appears below the pan & crop timeline in Vegas Pro 6,7,8,& 9. Not in any version of Movie Studio though.

  • whats the difference between sony vegas pro and sony vegas movie studio ?

  • @cheema728 Sony Vegas Pro costs over $500, offers unlimited audio and video tracks, and includes masking and other advanced video effects. Sony Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 has the look and layout of Vegas Pro, has about 90% of the same effects, has a limit of 10 audio and 10 video tracks, and costs under $100.

  • @guerillabill Thanx for the info :)

  • I'll do this mkaay, Mkaaay

  • i Do Not have anything under my position so i dont have mask or mass or w/e i have the newest verison of sony

  • The above tutorial is for Vegas Pro, not Vegas Movie Studio

  • Thanks, Bill! Your tutorials really help me out with my weekly show, The SAUCE!

  • Yes, I have purchased both Sony Vegas Movie Studio and Sony Vegas Pro

  • i just downloaded the free trial of sony vegas how long is the trial

  • @CrispyGn Probably 30 days.

  • you get a 30 day's trial.

  • im using vegas pro 9 and it wont let me put jpg images on my timeline is just has a O with a dash through it, but if i convert them to .gif it works, any way i can fix this it is really annoying

  • I just tested this with Vegas Pro 9, and it has no problems importing or placing .jpg images on the timeline.

If it doesn't work for you, check to make sure your images are truely jpg and not misformatted.

  • how do you put the preview and the others things down like vegas 7?

  • See my Youtube video, 'Change Timeline placement in Sony Vegas'

  • AMAZING Thanx su much rated subed favorited

  • AWESOME - Sub+Rated =D!

    Thanks..! Keep it up =D=D

  • i subbed u cuz ur vids rock :P but my movie studio dont work i tried platium and the other one i just get an error maybe u can help?

  • What kind of error are you getting?

  • @guerillabill

    i get this error:

    Failed to initialize script host.

    Error 0x80131902 (message missing)

pls help me with this error thhx

  • If you got the error message in Sony Vegas or Movie Studio, you need to reinstall the program. But first, do a virus scan.

And make sure you have at least 2 gig of ram in XP, 4 Gig in Vista.

  • i reinstalled like 5 times and im xp it dosent work maybe any more help?

  • Run a full virus scan on your computer.

Movie Studio is extremely stable, unless there are other problems on the computer.

  • ok thx ill try it but Windows Movie Maker works perfect and all but i want vegas its alot better

  • thanks :)

    this is pretty cool :]

  • how did you drag the the picture up in pan crop, i can only move it side ways

  • Find answer in my YouTube video, 'Solve Pan & Crop problem in Sony Vegas Movie Studio'

  • same here!!!! i can move it left to right but not up not down its lam-lo dude after effects is so much eaiser but the thing is adobe after effects is like laggy

  • I tried this in my sony vegas movie studio platinum and when I click event pan/crop under position there is no mask button, how do I get it? please help!

  • As mentioned in the video title and in the video itself, this technique only works in Vegas Pro.

You can do it in Movie Studio using track motion and pan & crop. I show this in the 101 Tips & Tricks for Movie Studio DVD available at my web site.

  • please help when i put in an effect on my clip it doesnt pop up the options to it!!!

    help!!!

  • Enlarge the effects windows to see more options. If the effects window doesn't open at all, it means you have docked it.

See my YouTube video, 'Finding lost windows in Movie Studio'

  • you cant do any masking in the normal one.

  • True, but you can use track motion to accomplish the same thing. I show that in my '101 tips & tricks for Sony Movie Studio' DVD

  • yea awesome thanks for sharing..haha

  • thx

  • jajaja I'm using this for my social sciences homework.

  • Dude, you sound like Al Gore.

  • Lmfao

  • if you have time watch this thats what i want to do: its on 0.33 minut, watch?v=0wISBk-AaMU

  • hey thanks for sharing this with us, and i got an question.. is it only possible with photo's or also with videos? as example i play a game, and i want my characters mouth to move, cause he got hes mouth closed, is it possible to record the vid, and make hes mouth move in SV pro ?

  • Yes, you can do it. Will require a lot of key frames

  • so its much harder? :P

  • Depends how much motion in the video to be animated

  • where is my masking thing i dont have it in vegas 9.0

  • Masking is only available in Vegas Pro, not Movie Studio

  • dam thanks enyway ive learnt heaps from your vids

  • I'm using vegas movie studio platinum, is it still not available or is there any kind of alternative or do you not know?

  • You can accomplish the same thing in Sony Movie Studio using video fx, and choosing 'cookie cutter'.

It takes a little bit more work, but it can be done.

  • Awesome thanks, I'll try it out :)

  • nice jon

  • thats actually pretty easy

  • gooodddddddddddddddddddddddddd

  • It probably would work in Vegas Movie Studio using a cookie cutter; but it wouldn't be as percise. That's why I upgraded to Pro, I wanted to be able to do masking. Thanks for the great tip.

  • nice work ;)

  • Clear and excellent demonstration. The effect is primitive compared to professional animation, but it is effective for YT. Since I own a Sony miniDVD camera, I wonder if Vegas is the best edit program. Suggestions?

  • I'd have to agree on that one. It is far better than Windows Movie Maker, less complex but has more effects than Adobe Premiere, and is far better in almost every way than Pinnacle Studio 12 besides capturing, which still isn't that bad on Vegas.

  • OMG how did you do so the timelin is above the video preview? i really want that

  • View my YouTube video 'Change Timeline placement in Sony Vegas'

  • Hi

I have Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.

When I select "event pan/crop" and go down to "position" there is no "mask key" (there is nothin under "position" at all.

how do I activate the mask key, Please.

    Greg

  • You can only do masking in Vegas Pro.

  • you should become a youtube partner!

  • Thanks for the suggestion - but I'm already a YouTube partner.

  • ok,never mind

  • alli see in the masked mouth i dont see the other picture inder it plz help!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Make sure the other picture is directly below the masked video.

  • I have had the Vegas Movie Studio 8 Platinum edition for over a year now, and thanks to recently discovering your videos, I am finally getting away from the basics and understanding some of the cool features. I would like to know if I would need to upgrade to Movie Studio 9 Pro to play around with the masking effects, such as in this clip. Or, is an upgrade going to make much of a difference from what I presently have ? ....thanks for your vids ! Your help is appreciated.

  • There is not much difference between Platinum 8 and Platinum 9.

You won't find the masking ability as shown above in any version of Movie Studio, but will find it in Vegas 7 and Vegas 8.

  • Thank you ! If I purchased either of these programs, would it work separately from my Vegas Movie Studio 8.0 Platinum program. Or, which is the best route to take for an upgrade. Thanks again Mr. Meyers ! Once again, your videos are answering the majority of my uncertainties of video editing.

  • Vegas 7 and Vegas 8 install as separate programs, and will not affect the operation of any other program, including sony movie studio.

    You can find Vegas 8 Pro for $129 from B & H Photo - item SOVP8Q

That's the best price going from a legit seller.

The $129 version will not include DVD Architect, but since you already have DVD Architect with Sony Movie Studio, you won't need it.

  • great tutorila 5/5

  • Movie Studio works. Thanks--keep these tut's coming :)

  • How do u do it in movie studio 8.0?

  • The above tutorial is for Vegas Pro. I haven't done this in Movie Studio, but think it can be done using a different technique.

  • Yay it works!!!! THX for showing! =D

  • Woot, this effect realy works!, THX for showing! =D

  • Hmm, when i try this, when i finish masking and head on to the position and try to move it, it'll only go sideways. =(

  • Make sure you select 'move vertically and horizontally' in event pan crop.

  • nah bill you cant do it in sony movie studio.

But you should defintely become a youtube partner, did you apply?

  • Yes, you can do this in Sony Movie Studio.

And yes, I am a YouTube Partner.

  • Thanks.

  • but this is working only for photos or videos too?

  • It works with photos or videos

  • can you put a still image and animate through the video with vegas pro?

  • Not sure what you plan to do, but you can animate still images with pan and zoom.

  • i mean have a image going through the video like a picture of a dog running along the floor while video still plays

  • It would be easier to animate the dog as a separate video with a transparent background, and then overlay that video onto the main video.

  • does it work with sony vegas 7

  • Yes, it works with Sony Vegas 7

  • i put the mask on a photo of 5 seconds long, but now i want that the same photo is long 1 minute. how can i do, im reallly lazy to make copy paste the mask for 1 minute. is a simple way to do it? i tried to make the photos longer to 1 minute but the mask moves only for 5 seconds and then the image is static

  • Hi Bill. Great tutorial. What program are you using to record this? Please get back to me.

  • I record and edit all my tutorials using Camtasia Studio from Techsmith

  • Hey Guerillabill, whats better? Sony Vegas Pro 8 or Sony Vegas Movie Maker Platinum Edition 8.0

Because, I have Sony Vegas Movie Maker Platinum Edition 8.0

Please Reply! I would love to know. I thought Platinum was better. Maybe not...please reply.

    Your videos are very helpful!

  • Vegas Pro is the professional version, Vegas Movie Studio Platinum is the top end of the home version.

    Vegas Pro has more features.

  • how you have a clips background totally black like the clips focus on only one character?

  • Check my other videos - they show how to extract an image from a photo, and place it on a background.

  • Oh ok thanks. Ima get pro

  • You can get Vegas Pro from B & H Photo for $129.95

  • Im using Sony Vegas platinum and i cant find the mask button its not under position

  • This technique only works in Sony Vegas Pro, not Movie Studio or Platinum.

  • Thanks..for the help. Seriously I was gonna buy the Adobe ImageReady for only moving the stupid mouth. It's great, buying the Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 worth it, because of your great big help. Thanks very much.

  • How can I flip videos or pictures? like, horizontally or vertically

  • I just posted a video to YouTube showing how to flip video clips in Sony Movie Studio. Look in my list of videos and you'll find it.

  • cool thx

  • excellent!

  • I'd seen this before and I wondered how to do it! Now I know - thanks to you! :)

    Thanks so much

    You Rock!

  • thanks

  • thanks dude

  • Hey you should try to become a partner

  • Actually, I am a YouTube partner. Thanks for the suggestion though.

  • ohh i am sorry

    did not no

  • how do you become a partner??

  • I wrote an article about how to become a youtube partner. You can find it on my site.

Or just search google for youtube partners .

  • Nice video! Thanks Bill. Keep them coming because I enjoy your vids a lot :)

  • Your tutorials are awsome 5*

  • Yeah, you can only do masking in Vegas pro. I just started learning how use masking and I'm loving it already. I figured out how to make my hand look like its passing through a wall/door. check out my videos to see the test if interested.
