@samsamsamtheman Are you serious? Ellen Greene's voice makes me want to pound my head against the wall! She's way too whiny when she sings, especially Suddenly Seymour. Kerry Butler is a lot better!
I have seen both Ellen Green and Kerry. Sorry to disagree with most but Kerry comes out on top as far as I'm concerned. They were both great but Kerry was amazing.
I saw it with the original cast. She was UNBELIEVABLE!! The entire cast was. It's a shame it closed so soon. It was one of the most entertaining show's I'd seen. Just a lot of fun.
I would also like to thank iluvlittleshop921 for her stunning intellectual prowess in posting "whatever!!! [sic]". It acts very well as a counterpoint to my argument.
Kerry Butler was a semi-acceptable Audrey (I'm not letting her off the hook for her fucking up of STG Reprise. Admittedly that blame could go to the director, but I'm more inclined to dislike Kerry Butler because of her annoying fandom), but why are her fans usually so thick? These people clearly aren't real fans of LSOH, they're fans of Kerry Butler, and they often even insult LSOH (and Ellen Greene, the original and to date best well-known Audrey) in the process of complimenting her.
The BEST Audrey. Her voice is, in my opinion perfect for this role.
Some of the lines are really funny, but it is ultimately quite tragic that she has this little dream of getting away from her hell. So I agree with @WonderfulLizardOfOz it's a tragedy, but is funny in some of the lines.
@Red41658 yea.. true... but Ellen Greene was annoying at times, though she had a great voice! I think Kerry Butler has an amazing voice! Ellen Greene, especially in Suddenly Seymour, kind of screeched at times :/
What makes Kerry so spectacular in any and all roles she portrays is that she makes each and everyone of them her own.THat and the fact that she has an incredible voice makes her the broadway superstar that she is ;-)
@abc123abc123youme This particular theatrical production is basically my religion. I have made a promise to attend it at least once a year. Attacks on my beliefs regarding this play are attacks on the base of my being. I take this play very seriously and find the idea that it is a silly comedy grating.
@BellatrixNellieLovet I am not debating that Little Shop of Horrors, and by extension the character Audrey, is comedic. I am merely debating that comedy is in any way the focus of either. Little Shop of Horrors is fundamentally a tragedy, and the emotional climax is Audrey's death, the saddest fictional scene I have personally witnessed. People that minimize that are most certainly evil or ignorant.
@iluvlittleshop921: BLOOD PRESSURE RISING.... Audrey is NOT in ANY WAY a COMICAL role! She is the most emotional role in the history of theatre! Her death scene is the saddest thing ever. People that play this role for laughs are EVIL and MUST DIE!
haha you need to calm down , its by no means the most emotional roles in theatre... i think you are being quite narrow minded about this , go watch some actual theatre hunny. shes supposed to be funny cause shes so pathetic
Very good singing, but she needs to be moving around more. She has the whole stage so use it! I feel it would have been more effect if she used the stage more. Just honest critique.
@MilliScenes definately not. this is audrey's moment... she is thinking about her dream.
its emotional to her and she needs to do nothing but sit and listen to herself speak about it. her walking around the stage would be unnecessary and distracting from the song.
it even says in the stage directions 'audrey sits and sings'.
@MilliScenes Well, the actor doesn't get to pick how their blocking goes. I'm guessing the director chose to have this one piece as an "in one" for contrast. Everything else in the show uses the whole stage. I think the moment is very inviting to the audience.
Just because you didn't like her doesn't mean it's a "flop." She has developed a good character and maintains it through the song. The character she has developed can laugh at the dreams of hers that she knows may be a little far fetched but can also convey her hopes of a better life away from the man who beats and verbally abuses her. If this isn't a good characterization, if she didn't give any heart, then I doubt anyone ever has and theater might as well cease to continue.

Her voice sounds like a child's. It doesn't fit the character. Audrey is a woman, not a 13 year old. Her voice is amazing compared to this woman. Ellen Greene is Audrey, end of story.
She does not overdo it. She is by far one of the best Audrey's I've heard. Her voice is so crystal clear and clean. It's beautiful. At the end her acting is perfect on "Far from skid row". Beautiful.
Oh, I really wanna shoot myself for not seeing this revival when Kerry was in it. Even through subpar video the acting here is amazing. I could almost swear she has tears in her eyes.
