Seriously this scene is one of the most emotional things to ever happen in star trek. Not once have things gone from good to bad so quickly and so extremely as it did during this episode. When Sisko calls for the ship to be abandoned its the most heart wrenching thing I've ever heard.
I remember this episode like it was yesterday. The Defiant got split wide open by those last 2 torpedoes, and the metal practically SCREAMS when it does. Still sends chills down my spine every time. The music practically breaks your heart too. Everyone touts the Defiant as being the most bad-ass ship ever, but it lost more than a few times in battle.
"Poor Capt Sisko...I believe he was quite fond of that shit." (I know he says ship, but I the first time I heard it, I LOLed.)
@katanaburner Yes they can, infact starfleet placed the Defiant class into mass production thanks to the diligent work and testing by Benjamin Sisko. Unfortunately they did not have room for much improvement given that its current technology was already far ahead of its time. But they do not have cloaking devices as the Defiants cloaking device was given to Sisko by the Romulans themselves thus superceiding the treaty of algeron. The only known case in Federation history.
@sagequan I learn something everyday. And I gotta say that my Star Trek know how just got thrown out the window here. How many Defiant class ships are there?
@katanaburner confirmed by all credible canon sources 9 Defiant class vessels were constructed by Starfleet. 2 were destroyed both during the dominion war the USS Defiant and the USS Valiant.
These vessels are always attached to a planetary defense network like earths main starbase, or to smaller stations in key hot spots like DS-9
Due to the Defiants size, crew compliment (49) lack research facilities or steller cartography, the defiant is not registered by Starfleet for independent steaming.
That is possibly the slowest evacuation I have ever seen. I like DS9 but unfortunatley for me this scene had the worst acting out of the series (yet thats pretty suprising, as it was still a good scene.) DS9 was easily the best star trek series, but this scene just had no sense of urgency, the characters didn't rush out, just calmly walked out. In battle there would have been a scramble to escape a doomed ship, not a calm walk across a steady ship (should have been rocked more by explosions).
@TRUExSIGHTS Don't you know? NO ONE runs on Star Trek, especially the main characters. They could have stopped to get a replicated coffee, a donut, and listened to some Klingon Opera before heading leisurely to the escape pods.
That was one of the saddest moments of Star Trek kind of how the loss of Enterprise D should have been. You really feel for Sisko, especially Worf, most of the tiem he lived on that ship, it was a fine ship, if the not the finest, the best
you have to admit the breens ships design is unconventional but beautiful, and the defiant ,well the best ship for the best star trek series , it kicks ass and has no puffy ten forward , where the quantum torpedoe was born and can fly like the millennium falcon(well alomost ,that flying out of the death star was a bit crazy). yet the explosions were ahead of there time, not just bang an bits but fire ,guts , skeleton and structure. however the detail was missed by many .
You can HEAR the pain in his voice when he gives the command to abandon ship. He's had a hard on for the defiant since he snuck up on DS9 with the Romulan cloaking device in use. Sisqo was one of the BEST captains there was.
@dajosh42069 yes, that moment to this day gives me chills. mr brooks was a helluva actor too bad they couldnt extend the series another yr but it will always be number one series to me.
Sisko gets a new Defiant shortly after and out of respect they named her the Defiant as well and even changed the registry to match the original Defiant. The new Defiant had a shield upgrade to make it immune from the Breen dampening weapon.
Was laughing my ass off at the dominion guys (cant remember the name of them) comments " poor captain sisko, i believe he was quite fond of that ship"
If the Dominion had destroyed Star Fleet and occupied The Federation colonies, then who would Q play with? He would be bored as shit. No Picard, No Sisko, No Janeway.
Um, no. The Defiant seen in First Contact was this one, not the new one. If you follow the time line, First Contact took place in 2373. This battle was in 2375.
it wasn't "one torpedo" it was an energy dampener, which neutralized structural integrity fields, shields, most crucial systems. frankly the ship only lasted as long as it did due to the ablative armor and resistant framework.
Of course they have shields, but the Defiant was taken out by a Breen energy damping weapon, which means the shields were drained, then the ship systems were shut down. The Defiant had pretty substantial firepower, which is why it was able to destroy several ships before being taken out.
Exactly, the Federation alliance got a bit too cocky after the first battle of the chintoka system and the destruction of the monac shipyards, they probably thought they were in for an easy fight.
Though i think its more anger and vengeance fueled - if i'm right - in the episode previous to this, the breen had attacked earth and this was going to be the first full on engagement?
@Wimpoman Of corse it is. They were expecting an easy victory. They had a fleet made up of the 3 most powerfull races military wise in both the Alpha and beta Quadrunts, they had found a countermesure to the Dominion beam weaponry so it didn't just go right through the shields. They lost I belive like 98% of the fleet or somthing like that.
Isn't it always the case that the Federation fights a new enemy or faces a new weapon that is invincible until a few episodes later when they fight them again?
The Defiant should have cloaked after each attack. I use that maneuver when playing Legacy so the enemy fleet can't maintain a weapons lock.
Without the energy dissaptor the Breen aren't all that remarkable; the Defiant destroyed one of the vessels with four quantum torpedoes (many more hit the Scimitar in Nemesis and it didn't even weaken it much; one orbital weapon paltform took six to destroy it...) and the Defiant was on it's way to destroying the vessel that fired the energy dissapating shot before she lost power
You got to feel bad for Starfleet it's yet another massacre. First wolf 359 now this. The Defiant was the most bad ass ship in any universe rest in peace.
Yes, one does have to feel bad, but one has o look at the other side of the coin. The founder did the worst possible thing, letting all of the pods escape. This gave the federation critical information and the surviving crews massive resolve to come back and fight harder. Starfleet crews don't think like most groups in that universe, almost always willing to rise back up after a loss. The defiant is a perfect example, born from the information at wolf 359

There's one thing missing about cloaking in Legacy and Starfleet Command 1, 2 and Orion Pirates: Cloaking ships usually means lowering their shields.
(I love discussing Sci-fi tech)
FekLeyrTarg 2 years ago
it takes time for the ship to cloak, and the cloak takes a ton of engergy to use, which is why the shields are taken offline to use it
